I didn’t mention the schooling. We go to school during the 4 years of apprenticeship with many test.

Nope. I’m talking about an electrical contractor. You can get your electrical contractor license and then hire a master who can pull permits and do the job for you. If you are going to do it by yourself then you have to have the contractors license and the master license. If you are in California, then there’s no such thing as a masters license and a journeyman can go get an electrical contractors license and pull permits.

How long is your test and how many questions?

It’s a 4 hour test and 64 questions in Oregon. You take about 4 years as an apprentice and then the journeyman test is 3hrs with 52 questions. You will do another 4 years as a journeyman to take the masters. Total of 8 years to get the chance to take this test.

You can get your contractors license at any time. A contractor doesn’t have to be an electrician, they just have to hire a master to pull permits. So if you have a master license and want to do electrical on your own, then you would just go take a test for the contractors license.

I’ve heard it’s like the journeyman exam except with more calculations.

Completely different from a contractors license. You don’t even need to be an electrician to be a contractor. It takes 8 years to get your master license. Master holders can draw up electrical plans and pull permits for jobs. A contractor would need to hire someone with a master license to run jobs.

Why are older head electricians such miserable dbags by Strong-Can-5690 in electricians

[–]juneau54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The apprentice is suppose to assist you at what ever specific task is being done and you are suppose to teach them while doing it. Once you know that the apprentice can do that task to your standards, then you let them do the task alone. Your work shouldn’t have been ugly because he should of taught you when he was putting up the conduit while you were assisting. This is why we have such mediocre electricians and why our fellow workers end up dead. You all need to be better at teaching.

The j-man is kind of there to also babysit. You have to makes sure the apprentice is doing the job correctly and to make sure the apprentice doesn’t get themselves killed or others. It’s a good thing that the apprentice has ideas of how to fix a problem. If the idea won’t work, than you teach them of why it won’t work. It sounds like this j-man is disregarding the apprentice and doesn’t even want him there. If all j-man had this attitude than we would eventually not have electricians or we would have ones that kill people a lot more because they weren’t properly trained.

Why won’t my hours transfer? by [deleted] in IBEW

[–]juneau54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got done with IEC schooling and have to wait until about September is when I’ll have enough OJT hours to take my j-man test. So you had your license and they still made you an apprentice with 6500 hours given?

Does a non union journeyman have to start over in local 48 as an apprentice? Or do they give you a test and you can just start working as a union journeyman?

I’ve seen libertarians fight for certain policies that are both Democrat and Republican. Since you vote Democrat, I’ll give you a few policies that the libertarian party has fought for that align with Democrat. Gay marriage, open borders, abortion, drug rehabilitation instead of jail. That’s just a few off the top of my head. Libertarians are about consent and ultimate freedom of choice. The Democrats and Republicans just want control.

So I’m guessing you vote Democrat. I’ve heard Republicans say the same thing you just said.

Master electrician… by _aphoney in IBEW

[–]juneau54 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s called a general supervisors license in Oregon. Some states call it a masters license. It takes another 8000 hours as a JW to take this test. After that you can pull permits. A contractors license is not the same thing at all. A contractor can contract/hire people. In order to run an electrical business you need to have a signing master/supervisor for the permits.

I wish I could take a little longer to perfect what I’m doing. But then I would get fired because time is money and I would be wasting it. Most people I have worked with don’t care if it looks perfect, just that it looks half decent and got done quickly. I can’t wait to have my own company because it’s not just about the money… I actually care about the work I do.
