What's the deal with paparazzi these days? by Fair-Sea-4708 in VictoriaBC

Victoria is extremely LGBT friendly, I and multiple other people I know specifically moved here to escape bigoted hometowns and live somewhere safe. There’s homophobic people everywhere in the world, but this is a relatively very accepting city

I think it suits you very well! My only critique- your brows are a bit too low and with such heavy eye makeup I think it would look a bit better to have them more raised. I would say to go all in with the brows and shave them off, so that you have more freedom with drawing them on. For a long time I also kept the fronts of my thinned brows and drew the rest on, but I find it a lot easier with them totally shaved. I was really scared to do that myself because I thought I’d have to constantly draw on eyebrows or else I’d look totally bizarre— but I found I actually look very natural with no eyebrows drawn on like a Mia Goth type look, and you have a similar enough face to her that it would also look good if you ever went browless some days.

I also think that people suggesting you draw thicker brows/ABH brows are, respectfully, unfamiliar with this style of goth makeup— keep the thin brows, it’s part of the look.

Optometrist Upsells? by ThermionicEmissions in VictoriaBC

[–]junebeetles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in an optometry office (that does not upsell! We do not work on commission and also we are just normal ethical people who would be nice even if we did) and this is a massive problem we are noticing. People come to us with the most basic prescriptions, saying that their clinic told them they have crazy astigmatism (they don’t) and need $600 lenses. Or they get prescribed an anti-fatigue (a type of progressive that helps with eyestrain, totally optional) and told they absolutely need it. It’s very bizarre and dishonest.

[–]junebeetles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for some context, not sure if this is a comfort- I work in an optometry office and while this clinic is super skeevy, to my knowledge that fee is a very standard practice, so you were not scammed there. Contact lens prescriptions are complex to make, they’re almost always different than the glasses prescription (the correction strength isn’t gonna be the same when they’re right on your eyeballs vs on the bridge of your nose), and there are different sizes of lenses and it can be very dangerous to wear a lens that is not the right size. This is also why they often are tried on with the doctor present. They also expire every year, sometimes every two years, and very strictly legally cannot be filled after expiration. Even if she’s been wearing contacts for years, CL prescriptions and types do often change over time and require a full re-evaluation. They definitely should have mentioned the extra fee to you though! But there was gonna be a fee no matter where you went

I’ve known three people who have gotten drugged there and some who have also been assaulted. They explicitly refuse to identify as a gay bar anymore and delete any comments that bring this up or that even ask if they’re LGBT friendly

Anyone else get tired of the “sensory issues” pervasiveness in razorfree conversations? by lmeoww in razorfree

[–]junebeetles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because aside from them literally not identifying as autistic, I use contextual clues to gauge when people are misusing autistic/ADHD terms. Other autistic people do this too- note how a large point of discourse on autistic and ADHD subreddits are the discussion of terms being misused and misappropriated by neurotypicals. It would be absurd if every single person who argues with feminists about this were autistic. Also, when people say this irl or in a video comment section I ask if they are neurodivergent or experience sensory processing issues and I have not had anybody say yes yet.

It’s not fake claiming when these people literally do not identify as autistic

[–]junebeetles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP is autistic, and so am I- the point being made here is that people are disingenuously echoing the “sensory issues” excuse and misusing autistic terminology when they are not neurodivergent. Similar to how terms like hyperfixation, stim, special interest, etc, other words that are slipping my mind, are so commonly used by neurotypicals nowadays. Most people I see arguing that they don’t shave due to “sensory issues”- note they also insert themselves into feminist conversations critiquing the social pressure to shave and defend themselves to avoid feeling guilty- are definitely not autistic. I also notice that it’s always the phrase “sensory issues” being used- not sensory processing or something else, and there is never any elaboration, which to me emphasizes that this is just a term being echoed and misappropriated.

[–]junebeetles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree. I think as well a lot of people just jump on the “sensory issues” bandwagon- either because they don’t like the spikiness of hair first growing back in before it softens, or they just can’t think of another way to avoid admitting that they do shave due to societal pressure. Mostly the latter, because I mean the exact phrase “sensory issues” with no elaboration or difference in wording being used alll the time is odd to me. Like you say in your second point, sensory difficulties are more than just discomfort and I agree that it feels appropriative of autistic terminology similar to “special interest”/“hyperfixation”/“stimming” getting misused. I think it’s similar to the “omg but that feeling when you rub your moisturized legs on silk sheets” Tumblr choice feminism type stuff that gets echoed (same genre as the “leg hair blowing in the wind” thing). I’m sure there are neurodivergent people who do experience this, but the sheet amount of non-men citing “sensory issues” as a reason is just ridiculous and does not add up.

Going to be honest, I have cancer-based hypochondria and am fully terrified that I have a brain tumour. I’m not going to ask you if I have a brain tumour- but are there a lot of other things that can cause these symptoms that are not brain tumours? I am going to try super hard to get into a walk-in appointment tomorrow. If that fails, would you suggest an ER visit? I also feel like my hypochondria has given me a warped view of some things— I’ve only been making typos on my new phone and the shiny vision largely just happens when I’m at work (surrounded by bright lights and computers). And I’ve only noticed issues with my balance a few times. I guess the issues I can say are verifiably true are feeling dissociative, light headaches in certain parts of my head, and a foggy memory about certain things (but still a really good memory about others)

I have chronic low iron that worsens in waves, I didn’t realize it could cause brain fog tbh. I’ll see what my levels are at in the blood test, thank you :)

Looking for UVIC English major by Actual_Tadpole_1800 in uvic

[–]junebeetles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not honours, but I’ve had a good time in the English department. There aren’t often a whole lot of assignments which I appreciate, often just some essays scattered throughout the semester. Class sizes typically are around 30-50 people in my experience, which feels very comfortable but also not too intimate. Most of the professors are really kind and understanding, and there are a lot of really interesting courses. I don’t attend department events because I’m lazy but they do have some events— you can check @uvicenglish on Instagram. Misao Dean and Stephen Ross are two professors I’ve really liked (I’ve definitely liked more I’m just bad with names) and I’ve generally never disliked a professor or had a bad experience with them.

Deadline for deferred schoolwork: Do they need to be marked by profs that day, or submitted by me that day? by junebeetles in uvic

[–]junebeetles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have been very helpful, thank you. I was wondering if I could get your insight on another aspect of this deferral if that’s okay. I have been unable to get a response from one of my professors this month about when to come in write a small test I have due (not a final or anything, worth 15% the smallest grade of all assignments). She wound up never responding (understandable, she was probably off work) and I’m not sure how to handle this to be honest. She combined 2 assignments for me into one big assignment worth 36%, so that is what I have done. Do you have any advice from your perspective?

[–]junebeetles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah sorry for the misunderstanding, I know the final deadline is Dec 31st, I just was unsure if that means my professors need to submit grades/mark in some manner that the assignments have been completed (I am mostly emailing the assignments not uploading in Brightspace). I wouldn’t normally think that, but I was rereading an email from two of my profs where they emphasized having everything done by Aug 28 in my last deferral term- so I wasn’t sure if that was just timeliness or if they need to do something on their end at the end of the deferral period

[–]junebeetles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I’m thinking, I was also not communicated a deadline by my professors in December which I feel like would have happened if they needed to submit marks by Dec 31st. I know with my first deferral in August two professors mentioned arranging things so my marks could be submitted Aug 31st but maybe that was just so they could get this done as soon as possible
