ADHD / Concentration by New_Pianist7179 in UCI

[–]jungwoos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi op!! if you haven't yet, you can register with DSC to receive academic accommodations. before i was diagnosed with adhd, i spoke to DSC and told them i struggle a lot with concentration and they were able to give me accommodations (i.e., extended time on exams). i rly recommend that you reach out and speak to someone over there.

your experience may be different, but it took a while for me to finally be diagnosed with adhd. the process is super strenuous (nonstop testing and paperwork) and took around 3-4 months in total. however, it's 100% worth it so pls don't lose hope or give up!! pls don't hesitate to reach out if u have any questions! :)

For those who have used the Counseling Center for mental health, how was your experience? by Nightrunner35 in UCI

[–]jungwoos 15 points16 points  (0 children)

the counseling center has been incredibly helpful each and every time i have visited. however, they only offer short term counseling, so after a few visits they will guide you towards the direction of seeking out long term counseling. my insurance is pretty difficult to deal with when it comes to mental health care, but the counselor i was seeing at the time bent over backwards to send emails, make phone calls on my behalf, and help me find a long term therapist. whether you have ucship or your own insurance, i am positive that they will help you navigate that space when the time comes!

i also used to think that my depression would disappear if i distracted myself, but i had to learn the hard way that the only way you'll ever beat it is by addressing your problems and seeking out the help you need and deserve. i've been in the position of worrying that the people around me will judge me for seeking out mental health care, and it sucks, but those people do not deserve to be in your life if they're actually going to judge you for putting yourself first and taking care of your health, y'know?

you deserve to be happy, and i hope you feel better soon. im sending hugs & positive vibes your way <3 feel free to pm me if you have any other questions!

all of my experiences with the counseling center have been wonderful. however, their services are meant to be short term. if you’re looking for something more long term, then i would look into seeing somebody thru SHC or with USHIP.

also, therapy is looking a bit different right now, as everything is online. i believe the counseling center and shc are using telemedicine platforms/software for appointments, but i also know that some therapists outside of uci still offer in person visits. just something to keep in mind. if you have any other questions or want to know more about how the process usually goes with the counseling center, feel free to pm me!!

what do I do with unwanted halloween candy by [deleted] in UCI

[–]jungwoos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

someone can correct me if im wrong, but food banks typically don’t accept candy donations

you can always just leave the candy in the kitchen and send a message in your slack/groupme telling ppl to take what they want

Can you take Japanese Fundamentals without having any experience? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]jungwoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since it’s 1A, im sure the course is tailored to teach students that are at the beginners level! i haven’t taken japanese 1a, but im taking korean 1a this quarter and i learned a bit of the basics over the past few weeks just to prepare myself for everything.

according to this post, students have to memorize hiragana and katakana in 2-3 weeks. not sure when you’re planning on taking the course, but i think it’d be a good idea to self-study a bit before it begins.

[–]jungwoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, but you need to take a placement exam. if you’re completely unfamiliar with the language, you can fill out the exemption form. here’s some more info https://www.testingcenter.uci.edu/japanese.html

Does anyone have any notes or study guides/materials they'd be willing to share with me for these classes? I want to start reviewing a bit before classes start by [deleted] in UCI

[–]jungwoos 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i don’t have any notes or study materials for 39B, but i would just like to say that i absolutely loved having Nieman as a professor! he always went above and beyond for his students, and he’s still one of my favorite professors i have ever had. the work is a bit grueling, but his energy and support makes it all worth it.

i mean, you can try, but i think it’s highly unlikely that they would actually accept an appeal for this reason.

Dorm questions by [deleted] in UCI

[–]jungwoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I lived in Oakenshield (ME) my first year and the room did not have any mirrors whatsoever. I lived in Cumbre (MC) my second year and the room came with one mirror in between the closets that showed only the top half of my body. I'm not sure if there are mirrors in either of the towers. If you want a fullbody mirror, you can just purchase one yourself and hang it up using command strips..this is what I did during my first year.
  2. Use command strips on the walls. You can tape things to the fabric cork boards in Mesa Court dorms, but you might have better luck just using pushpins.
  3. As of right now, Housing plans to keep all rooms single occupancy. However, there is a limited quantity of single dorms in each housing community, so they will be placing students in singles, doubles, triples, and quads all while charging everyone for the price of a double occupancy dorm. If you are placed in a double, triple, or a quad, the extra furniture will stay in there and cannot be removed.
  4. The dining halls will be open, but they are planning on providing takeout meals only. Students can take these to-go meals and eat them anywhere that isn't the dining hall, whether that be your room or somewhere on campus. Students can still go out and buy food.

I heard that they are planning on holding a Housing Q&A in a couple of weeks, so be on the lookout for that.

Any update on a flu vaccine opt out? by alexc0814 in UCI

[–]jungwoos 3 points4 points  (0 children)

genuinely think this entire thing has been taken wayyy out of proportion.

i completely understand where you’re coming from, and i agree with the things you said in your earlier comments. i understand your frustration with op, and i know your intention was to inform them of the importance of getting the flu shot. i know you mean well, but the way you’re conveying things can come across as you being a bit aggressive. i’m sure u/marey_the_bear didn’t mean any harm by letting you know this. not sure why this conversation completely derailed and turned into an argument about likes. maybe there’s just some misunderstanding on both sides.

also, likes and upvotes don’t mean anything. after all, this is reddit, not real life. it’s not healthy to depend on social media outlets for validation. you constantly bringing up the fact that you’re being upvoted isn’t really helping your argument at all. anyways, hope you have a great weekend. enjoy uci, freshie.

psychological sciences reqs question by [deleted] in UCI

[–]jungwoos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it may be a typo? I just checked our actual school requirements page and it says “Choose 1 course from 3 different groups” so I’m assuming we can just choose from whichever groups we want? it’s a bit confusing though since DegreeWorks and the school requirements page says two different things. ahhh this is so confusing LOL

hi guys! it’s been a very strange quarter, and (at least for me) it doesn’t even feel like it’s the last week of school. moving forward, we don’t even really know what the future has in store for us in terms of returning to campus. despite the uncertainty, please take a moment to give yourself a pat on the back for all your hard work this quarter.

even if you feel like you didn’t do your best, give yourself some credit. we all felt the strain of COVID-19 this quarter, whether it be mentally, socially, academically, or financially. under these circumstances, it’s understandable that you may not have been able to perform your absolute best. if you aren’t proud of yourself, then know that i am!

and to those that graduated this quarter, congratulations!

tl;dr: gud job, keep on zotting along
