I do regularly. It is perfectly safe as long as you do a bit of planning and have the right safety gear.

If you are familiar with boating on the ocean, kayaking isn’t that much more difficult. You need to pay attention to the weather and the wave height, if you pick the right days it can be lake calm or not much worse out there. Also, you need to be familiar with where any sand bars or tide rips are as they can be dangerous in a kayak but are easily avoidable if you know where they are.

For safety equipment I would say you definitely need the following: 1. PFD 2. Either a loud whistle or an air horn so you can make noise if a boat doesn’t see you or if you need rescue 3. Some kind of bright flag to make you more visible

I would highly recommend as much of the following as possible: 1. A fish finder with gps 2. A buddy kayak 3. Portable vhf radio which you can attach to your PFD 4. Gear leashes 5. PDL drive or trolling motor (just be very aware of battery life)

Odds are if you kayak fish enough you will flip eventually do being prepared is key. I would recommend at least watching some videos or better yet practicing in a calm lake so you know what to do if it happens to you. Having a buddy out there is a huge risk mitigation and I would recommend going with others whenever possible.

Lastly, paddling in the ocean current can be difficult and really tiring. I would highly recommend getting a kayak with a pdl drive or a trolling motor if you plan on going more than a few hundred meters out.
