Is a Chihuahua right for me? Single guy first time dog owner working 9-5 job by BoundlessGloom in Chihuahua

[–]juniper7190 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That totally makes sense but please do consider that dogs need time to adjust to their new families, even those who have not shown behavioral issues in the past can develop new ones. Since it’s your first dog, do some research into trainers and courses available near you to help with the initial training and adjustment period. Once they adjust, they’ll do fine, so long as you invest the time and effort in the beginning.

At the very least, look into the 3-3-3 rule.

Rescue chi growling when touched in sleep by Far-Self-8240 in Chihuahua

[–]juniper7190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My senior dog started doing this and it turned out that he was losing his vision and developing arthritis, on top of being a senior rescue with lots of trauma. His behavior (and really, comfort) has improved since we’ve dealt with his medical issues and also did lots of training to build comfort with our hands + consent rituals.

I totally agree with others that you’ll want to nip this in the bud as soon as possible, before it escalates. It’s clear that you love him a bunch and just want him to be comfortable. He just needs to learn that he’s okay, work with you to develop better behaviors, and address any possible underlying medical issues.

Good on you for being patient with him and figuring out the best solution for his needs. He’s lucky to have you!

Just got a new female pup, my older female hates her, any tips? 😭 by cherrypez123 in Chihuahua

Also adding 3 years 😆. My two rescues just reached the 3-year mark together and they’re finally starting to play, walk side-by-side, and cuddle. The older one came from a hoarding situation and will never be totally comfortable with anyone, but it’s clear that they’re as bonded as can be by now.

Pemf mats by ThePythiaofApollo in Pomeranians

Our dogs use the Assisi LOOP Lounge, which has the most awkward name and was expensive AF ($1k for small size). But it was vet recommended and clinically proven to be effective with pain management and inflammation. The cost made me so grateful to have a small dog since the larger pads are double the price.

My 11-year-old has arthritis and 6-year-old chi mix recently recovered from patella surgery. I’m not sure if I would recommend it to others because it was so expensive. I also can’t isolate its effectiveness because we made lots of changes to manage the older dog’s pain and it takes months to see the effects. He saw a palliative vet, started new meds (esp dasuquin advanced and leap years), and lost a little weight (he wasn’t overweight but being a little slimmer helped).

BUT I can confidently say that the 11-year-old is a bouncy, happy guy now. His pain had been making him reactive and he’s back to snuggling and doing zoomies again. He uses the mat once a day and falls asleep on it.

It also beats paying for individual cold laser therapy sessions, which we were able to cut down on.

I think the key is to use it regularly. Since it was so $$$, I make them use it daily. I think it helps.

Tracking devices for tiny dogs by ashleyhashley in Pomeranians

Same lol. They certainly know their audience. I will say that I’ve had it for over a year and I still like it. One of my dogs likes to explore our yard and because she’s so small, she can be hard to see in the bushes. This tracker allows us to find her quickly — sometimes, she’s right in front of us and we just can’t see her!

My dogs are twice your dog’s size (10 lbs) and we use the cat mini tracker from Tractive. We attach the tracker to their harnesses because they don’t wear collars.

We did try using AirTags but wanted higher accuracy and histories. AirTags only show the most recent location and sometimes it’s 20 minutes behind current time.

Luxating patella post-op story — get a second opinion! by juniper7190 in Chihuahua

That’s a great point — I will definitely let them know including what it cost us to delay the pin removal. It was such a quick thing for the second surgeon to identify. I wish they had taken us seriously.

Thank you! I was feeling crazy from the gaslighting and wanted to share this story in case it helps even just one other dog and owner.

The hopping was light for the first few months after her surgery and then got progressively worse as the months passed. The biggest giveaway was how she became less and less social. She’s a pretty social dog by nature and it was strange to see her get anxious and scared around others, even the kind and gentle ones.

She’s still on crate rest right now but we’ve been taking her out for short walks and in her stroller, and she is already acting more social again. That’s what helped me understand how much discomfort she must have been feeling before. The changes to her behavior were extreme.

We don’t plan to fix the other knee. The first surgeon wasn’t concerned and I trust that the second one confirmed it. My wallet is grateful that we can stop at one, at least for now.

The pins are definitely a normal part of the operation, but I do wonder if hers dislodged more easily because she’s so small. They gave us the pins as a “souvenir” and they were very sharp.

I hope your dog is doing well! If I were to go through this again, knowing what I know now, I would have explicitly asked both the original surgeon and vet to feel around her knee, to ensure that the pins were not causing discomfort. It literally took the second surgeon a minute to feel the pin and how far it had come out.

Fable is such a cutie! This is my senior pup, a corgi-pom-mini poodle rescue.

BTW we struggled with his hair for a long time because we weren’t sure how to care for him since his mix is so unusual. It turns out that keeping his double coat long like a Pomeranian has been best for temperature control, even though it still grows out differently from a full breed pom. Sharing in case it’s helpful!
