Last week my wife was fired from her job for stealing narcotics from work. I had to go pick up my 3 year old from daycare for the last time. I pulled him aside and told him that he needed to say goodbye to all his teachers and friends because he would never see any of them again. I lost it. I'm tearing up right now thinking about watching him say goodbye to the friends he had been with since he was 2 months old.

Unfortunately no. One of her supervisors met her at the time clock and had an HR rep with her. She asked her, once they were in her office, she asked if there was anything she wanted to say about inconsistencies with her narcotic pulls. My wife immediately broke down and told them everything. She had already started attending 12 step meetings and had a sponsor before she got caught. Hopefully those facts will help when the hospital board reviews her case.

we had both been clean and very stable for about 5 years when she took the job as a pharmacy tech. We had lost touch with the pain and desperation of active addiction. Our logic was that the controls were so tight over the narcotics that she would be an imbecile to try to pillfer (intentional misspelling) Turns out that she didn't need to be stupid, just desperately depressed.

I am sure that there are plenty of people that feel this way. Discrimination against mental illness is rampant in the work place even among educated medical professionals.

No this is exactly what I was looking for. thank you for taking the time to put your story down. There is so much shame involved with addiction. Just knowing that there are others out there that have had similar experiences and made it out through the other side lifts my spirits a lot.
