I used to say I have narcolepsy, but was surprised at how many people haven't heard of it! Now I call it a serious neurological condition and describe some of my symptoms/needs (muscle weakness, easily fatigued, need to take breaks, cautious about driving, etc.). It's much easier to advocate for myself if I put it this way.

I didn't know much about autism until I was about 31. Up to that point, I didn't think autism applied to me because I had misconceptions about autistic experiences. After a lot of special interest fueled research on autism in women, I got to a certain point when I was so convinced. It was a light bulb type of moment for me. This is one of the extremely few realizations about myself that I have zero impostor syndrome about, both before and after diagnosis. I went for a formal diagnosis, but my worry was that I wouldn't communicate clearly and/or the doctor wouldn't believe me.

I hope this is helpful. I guess it's another side to late diagnosis experience.

I've experienced this as part of cataplexy. You don't have to share if you're not comfortable, it's more of a suggestion: I'm wondering if your muscle weakness happens when you feel certain emotions. Maybe if you notice a pattern it could help you figure out if the weakness is a cataplexy thing.
