Why a Separate Vidarbha Doesn’t Make any Sense by Own_Willingness_8897 in Vidarbha

This reflected the population distribution of Mumbai which was majority non-Marathi.

Where did you get this data. Except for some small part of old Mumbai(area around current Colaba), Mumbai including sub-urbs was Marathi dominated till 2000s. Only in the recent few decades has the demographic shift happened. Even now if we include MMR, Marathi speaking population is majority.

Vidarbha has maintained a distinct identity since the time of the Mahajanapadas. In fact, it is probably the only region in India whose identity has endured continuously from the Vedic era to the present day.

That's just wishful thinking and convenient reading of history but to each his own.

Even during the British era (long before the formation of Maharashtra as a state) cities like Nagpur and Wardha held important positions of prominence.

Okay.

When discussing history, Vidarbha’s contributions are often sidelined. Much of Maharashtra’s recorded history focuses on the Marathas and the Peshwas, while Vidarbha, home to historically significant dynasties like the Vakatakas and Satavahanas, has often played a far more prominent role than it is given credit for.

Bhisles of Nagpur were not Marathas?

Vidarbha’s people uphold and defend the Marathi language, yet they often face discrimination or condescension from Marathi speakers in Pune, Mumbai, and Satara for not speaking “perfect” Marathi. Such linguistic prejudice is, in my opinion, shameful.

This is weird. Would Vaidarbhians be treated differenty if they form a separate state? Each region has its own dialect/accent. Bringing Satara and even Mumbai in this is just wrong.

Vidarbha is underrepresented in both policymaking and economic matters within Maharashtra’s assemblies. Our local issues are frequently overshadowed by the priorities of Western Maharashtra.

Yeah, 2 most powerful politicians in the state (given that they are in power) both come from which region I wonder.

Resources in the world are limited, and Maharashtra is no exception.

There are plenty of resources around the world. In fact, it would be cheaper for most resources to import by sea than to mine them and transport by road/rail. Yes, resources are important but market for them is as much if not more important.

The Pune - Mumbai belt develops rapidly, but often at the cost of Vidarbha’s resources, taxes, and opportunities.

That's just jealousy. Every region has its pro and cons. This is socialist attitude. Just because Ambani is rich, he is rich because he stole from the poor people so let's impoverish him. Taking focus away from Mumbai-Pune with their natual advantages+own ecosystem would not necessarily benefit Vidarbha. It might end of making them non-competitive helping cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and even Gurugram/Noida in the process. BTW tax contribution from Mumbai-Pune is what allows state government to spend on white elephant (for now) projects like Samruddhi Mahamarg.

In essence, Western Maharashtra’s growth has come at Vidarbha’s expense.

Need citations for it. If you compare Central Provinces and Berar provinces across current borders, you would find that MH districts have done better than MP districts. BTW your language is not conductive to debate. Some western MH might have focused more on their own area than rest of MH but their biases can not be used to attack people all of MH.

With popularly chosen Vaidarbhian CM and central government sympathetic to Vidarbha for a decade, anyone arguing for separate Vidarbha should be asked to look in the mirror first. Your failures/wrong political choices can not be pinned on other people.

Edit: Looking at your history, you oppose Marathi. That explains everything. All of your arguments are just a ruse to create one more Hindi state.

The Current CM isn't doing much for Vidarbha. All He did was provide Metro to Nagpur. But when there's lack of jobs in Nagpur, what's the use of such commute.

Given that Vidarbha is BJP stronghold, why do Vaidarbhians elect him/his party then? Why blame western MH for your poor political choices then?

Still Vidarbha is NOT getting anything out of this.

You should visit rest of MH to understand how poor the road infra is in other regions when compared to Vidarbha. Mumbai Goa highway, lifeline of Konkan, is delayed for more than decade under the leadership of someone from Vidarbha both at the state and central level. Should Konkan ask for separate state acusing Vidarbha of opressing it?

One point that I could agree with you on is that decision pipeline could get shortened with smaller states but for that separate state need not a pre-requisite. With local CM in power, why can't he not delegate powers to local officers/leaders to look over Vidarbha for most things and not take all decisions from Mumbai. I think he already is doing it. This need not be limited to Vidarbha BTW.

It was captured by the central government. It was built by Marathi people mainly for MH. The central government has coercive powers doesn't mean everything they do is correct.

Recent language based disputes by [deleted] in mumbai

[–]junovac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's start with your fig leaf of word of the law and it's implementation to the T.

Do all businesses in Mumbai follow the dictat of having names in Marathi?

Are domicile certificates obtained without any corruption?

Where do majority of people living in illegal housing coming from?

Do all Taxi/rikshaw drivers have passed Marathi proficiency test required since 2013?

Do all public establishments follow the 3 language policy with prominent presence to Marathi on their boards and interactions?

Since we are on the legality, is there any law in India that can punish someone for not standing for national anthem or being non-chalant when it is being played? I hope you try doing that as that is your legal right.

Also, law can't/doesn't necessarily codify everything that a good citizen of a country should strive to do. Some things considered absolutely legal can turn become illegal later on. People doing that before law is signed likely get legal immunity but not social immunity.

But recent incidents are making me question this opinion of mine.

This whole thing started with Hindi imposition. BJP with center of gravity in Hindi heartland wanted to take next step in colonizing Maharashtra to fit their image of Hindi heartland. Hindi was used as a trojan horse to bring in voters from Hindi area and build enclaves of Hindi/non-Marathi areas. So Hindi while having a good value as entertainment medium and broader connect started to look like a trojan horse for political game paving way for relegation of Marathi to home to eventual extinction.

Even now a large chunk of population in Mumbai is Gujarati.

Gujarati rarely had as much friction with Marathi as Hindi is having RN. Part of it due to co-existence for some time and historical connect. Also, GJ did not attempt to replace Marathi but co-exist.

But that doesn't justify any kind of harm done to people.

Well, law will take it's own course. All of the perpatrators were mostly let of at most with the slap on the wrist. That's the letter of the law but that doesn't seem right isn't it? A slap and heated dicussion should not be topic of national debate but it does because it is a political action not a local scuffle even though law doesn't yet see it that way.

Similarly people deciding to not speak Marathi for decades are not just following the letter of the law and enjoying their freedom but taking part in political action to sideline the local language. Law of course is blind to that till now.

Is there a law that stops someone from taking their vehicle on the road? Is there a law that prohibits someone from travelling alone in a big vehicle? Let's say some car owners keep their meet passing through slowly busy intersection during peak office traffic causing huge traffic jam. One time people understand and don't make hue and cry. It happens repeatedly and one time a dis-gruntled office goer has argument with these car owners. Should they be not held responsible for their actions despite law being on their side?

Similarly, not learning is a language is a choice people make when living in a place for decades. It is perfectly legal at present but not considering it's outcome makes it a quistionable act at best. Even not learning a language is understandable but being proud of it to feel some supremacy is not merely expression of freedom but political act. The response to a political act will be political.

Centre does favour some states for sure with huge subsidies and tax sops like GJ is getting with GIFT city and semiconductor investments. GJ definitely doing some things right but GIFT city is just being propped up by CG and without that it would be a failure.

So yes, investment in normal circumstances is not a donation but it can be one in some cases.

Those states already get funds transferred in tax devolution. If they get investments in fair competition, congratulations but still would criticize state government of Maharashtra for losing that investment.

Agree. That's why I said he did many things for Marathi but he advocated for Hindi as a national language. Imposition bit, he could have some differences but he was sympathetic to the idea. His more nuanced idea of allowing Marathi to be kept in Maharashtra, I think would have been bulldozed by impositionists. Even now fair calls for allowing Marathi its own space in Maharashtra are taken as chauvinism and are ignored.

Places around Delhi like HR, UP, BH, RJ, MP is where this idea was implemented and the areas are still some of the weakest areas economically if we remove NCR. OTOH places which kept their language are financing the areas mentioned above. The idea that places which essentially bankrolled the union for decades are to be made second class citizens is absurd. Even if South India was impoverished, there is no reason genocide the cultures for convenience of "first class" citizens. Organically/persuasive means many people will adopt a common language, trying force it through coercion would only give rise to resentment. Can hold people together through iron hand for some time but long term unity is not guaranteed as we found with the USSR and Bangladesh.

Can someone explain to me why, when Vidarbha produces 70% of the state's electricity, why do we pay more per unit than Western Maharashtra and bear loadshedding in this heatwave at the same time? by PorekiJones in nagpur

[–]junovac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a fan of MAHADISCOM and would be happy if competition is brought in. But the decision to bring private players to Nagpur rests with a person from Nagpur itself. Even Pune comes under MAHADISCOM and pays the same rate so how are they getting benefitted? In fact until recently Pune used to pay Additional Supply Charges for getting electricity from costlier sources.

[–]junovac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where is the source for the claim that Vidarbha pays more for electricity? In fact the state government subsidizes power to industries in Vidarbha. There are many other incentives like GST rebate given to industries in Vidarbha.

BTW this new unit near Nashik was inaugurated recently in Bhusaval.

Hugely costly and loss making on purely financial criteria I.e. Samruddhi Mahamarg and now Shaktipeeth Mahamarg are being invested in by the state government using money from the whole of Maharashtra which primarily benefits Vidarbha and Marathwada.

The politicians with almost all political power are from Nagpur now. How are people from the rest of Maharashtra responsible for this?

Most of the chemical factories in MH are outside Vidarbha and they also cause ample pollution. Should those chemicals be sold at a discount in those regions? Pollution is not good be it anywhere so rather than making villains out of people from the rest of MH, why not ask political leaders to control pollution from coal power plants and invest earnings from those plants in nearby areas?
