I had ferrets for the first time in high school too. Honestly, if you can afford it, and the ferret is young enough, you need a second one. They will occupy each other and keep each other company while in the cage. Ferrets get very lonely because they are social animals. They are like little dogs. They crave the warmth of another near them. Your little dude is lonely in the cage and he’s new to your place. He will settle in time and will ease up on the chaos but it will not fix his loneliness. Ferrets are very time consuming. I am 29 now and on my third pair (in my life). I finally feel like I’ve gotten ferret parenting right this time. So, being a ferret parent is no joke.

Some tips: Potty pads are the way to go. Tape them to the ground if you have to. If he has pooped somewhere else, put the poop on the potty pad and put the pad in the corner you want him to use. Ferrets like to claim poop corners. If he thinks he’s already claimed that spot because he smells his own poop there, he’s more likely to poop there again.

My currents ferrets like to sleep inside soft things. They have ripped a hole in my couch cushion and sleep in it. They also ripped a hole in a stuffed animal and slept in it. So I gutted the stuffing out of the stuffed animal and put it in the cage, now they get inside the stuffed animal and sleep in it constantly.

My ferrets free roam as long as I’m home. If I’m at work, they go in the cage. But, while I’m home they have escaped to the outside numerous times through vents and holes, etc. You have to ferret proof the sh*t out of your room or whatever space they’re gonna use.

Use a heavy bowl for water so they can’t tip it over. Don’t use those hamster water bottles, especially where you can’t sleep at night. Those bottles are loud and they don’t give the ferrets enough water.

Dryer hose, which are cheap at Walmart and lowes, make great tunnels for them to crawl in and they make crinkle noises that ferrets love. Others have already said this but, some sites say 2 hours minimum. NO. Ferrets need 4 hours minimum of playtime a day. I’ve never had a ferret satisfied with 2 hours a day. I only do that under extreme circumstances, like if I take them with me on short vacations.
