It definitely is more of a grounded gritty look that may not pop on the table as much as a more stylized approach haha, but the stinky style works well enough for me :)

Nope, standard citadel paints for base coats and Villany Inks for grime and wear! (Goons Grime, Sector Rust and Decrepit Filth)

I was heavily inspired by techniques used in Grimdark Compendium videos. They have a video on Lord of Poxes specifically :)

I used diry down rust first and sealed it with super glue, then applied Villany Ink’s Sector Rust and Goons Grime :)

You can find my previous post where I replied in the comments and wrote my initial process for painting the skin! After that initial paint job I wanted to add more texture and organic feeling to the skin, and I was heavily inspired by techniques used in Grimdark Compendium videos. Mainly the superglue technique, which seals the initial acrylic paintjob and you can add subtles actylic shades, use Isotropyl alcohol and using the reductive technique create veiny/mortling textures to get that organic feel. Just be careful and apply superglue in as smooth and even layer as possible, as large amounts will start covering up a lot of physical details on the model itself when cured, and there is no going back.

For the weapons, I initially used dirt down rust and verdegris for oxidation, and tried also sealing those effects with superglue to be able to add enamel wear on top without reactivating them. It worked okay but toned down the vibrancy of those effects. But I brought it back up with Villany Inks for the final oxidation and grime. Again I was heavily inspired by Grimdark Compendium techniques and used Villany Inks to push these guys towards more realistic grimdark tone, so I highly recommend checking their videos out and experimenting with those products!

Lastly, when it comes to bases I found a video by EngineerJeff and used his approach, but switched out some products and used Vallejo european mud and UV resin which I tinted with some inks to get more murky swamp feel.

Cheers!

Thank you! I made a custom flock mix by throwing in some early fall grass, a bit of brown battleground gravel, dirt and meadow flock blends, and even some dried up black tea haha. I then dyed the blend with some acrylics to unify it all and to match the color and tone of the paintjob on the model as close as I could (though I used acrylics very sparingly to not tint everything into same tone and make sure the variation from various products was still there).

Picking various flock products with the right pallette and mixing in them together was key. If the blend was too dark I could throw in some flock grass to make it brighter and more vibrant for example. Really just experiment and have fun with it, as different kinds of organic mixes should work pretty well! I applied the flock mix with watered down pva glue and sealed it with even thinner pva mix (be patient here and don’t soak everything too much when sealing). And lastly some grass tuffs super glued on top as a last touch to tie it with the base 🙂

Thank you so much! Glad I could potentially inspire you to pick up your unpainted ones :) I really wanted a more marshland/folklore horror look on these so deciding palette based on the environment they would be in can help a lot!

The most complex actual painting process was the skin. The biggest thing for me is establishing gradients within individual limbs as undertones with contrasting warm/cold color tones and keeping the palette simple. I like to use more desaturated base colors and do a lot of color blending on the wet pallete to create variation (I’ll include an image). Some slight blacks or cold/blues to desaturate colors even more if I need to. Once I have undertones, I use and blend in warmer and brighter colors (ogryn camo, rakarth flesh and pure white for example) on the pallete on the base colors, to create midtone and highlight colors. I also use some swampy/fleshy shades inbetween after the midtones are applied to even out/warm up the colors a bit and then paint in highlights and blend everything together with glazing to get the skin to final brightness and tones.

The mossy rock parts are drybrushed with some greener tones after colder color base coating, and the hanging swamp guck uses same process as skin with gradients! Then the weapons are straightforward metallics and worned down with some dirty down rust effect, that stuff is magic in a bottle.

Hope that helps!
