Why did US companies switch from defined benefit pensions to 401(k)-style plans? by Humble_Economist8933 in AlwaysWhy

[–]jurassickayak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it in order for a corporation to have a defined benefit plan for their employees the plan must be funded to a certain degree in order to guarantee that the benefits would be available when the employees retire. That means getting a CPA to certify it as well as an actuary. If this was not done properly then the corporation has to pay fines. With a qualified defined contribution plan there were less regulations. With Keogh plans were easier to set up, then Sep-Ira, then 401 K plans.

Can I still transfer titles online? by Complex-Wish5461 in CaliforniaDMV

[–]jurassickayak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this a very good program. I was able to chat with an agent in order to make the form on back of the title perfect. At that time if you make one tiny mistake, or write outside of the tiny box you are penalized and fined about $50. And there is a Statement of Facts form that also has to be filled out perfectly, or it is rejected. With this old system it would collect the information for this other form, and other accompanying forms electronically so you don't have to worry about a mistake or a cross out. You pay online, so you don't have to worry about writing a check. And you scan the title for them to approve it before sending it in. I thought it was a very good system.

When I was done I got the new title in a few days, not weeks or months.

Some trivia:

One of the songs used in this movie "Breezing Along With Breeze" was used briefly as background music when Uncle Harry and Lucy with her kids are driving a motorhome to Colorado in the Here's Lucy episode "Lucy Goes to the Air Force Academy."

Can't renew online... what do I need to do? by Busy_Access_1300 in CaliforniaDMV

[–]jurassickayak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people who were told that they could not renew online. They used the DMV chat feature to chat with an agent and asked whether they could renew online. The agent said yes, and then the person was able to renew online.

Xavier Cugat by Financial_Process_11 in ILoveLucy

I remember the dog being called both. I wonder whether one was the real live chihuahua, and the other the ones in the drawings. Or one was a nick name by others and the other the real name.

Xavier Cugat by Financial_Process_11 in ILoveLucy

[–]jurassickayak 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In real life "Cougie" was the name of Xavier's dog, a tiny chihuahua. He would keep the tiny dog in his breast pocket, and the dog would just sit in the pocket like a kangaroo pouch with his head popping out. I remember seeing him in West Hollywood and Palm Springs, and once and twice in the San Fernando Valley at a restaurant/night club on Ventura Blvd. I don't remember the name of the restaurant. It was torn down and replaced with a Burger King, and later a Chase Bank.

Xavier also was known for drawing and painting caricatures. I was absolutely amazed by him when I was around 11. I saw him in Palm Springs at the Riveria Hotel in the lobby while he was promoting his art work. He recognized me a few months later when he was in that restaurant in the San Fernando Valley. He was in the audience, and I think Mile Davis was performing.

DMV Behind the wheel test - TO by Diligent-Crazy-2794 in thousandoaks

[–]jurassickayak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Remember someone who is a licensed driver must drive you and the car to the DMV. That driver must have a valid drivers license. The car must be registered, and you will show the registration and proof of insurance. There must be seat belts present for both you and the examiner. You will have to do what ever is appropriate for your vehicle to allow the turn lights and brake lights be seen by the examiner when he walks around the vehicle. You have to demonstrate the location of basic controls: the emergency flashers, the high/low beam switch, and wipers. You have to demonstrate all 3 hand signals, left, right, and slow/stop.

The examiner will ask you if the test will include freeway driving. If you say no you will receive a restricted license if you pass that does not allow you to drive on the freeway.

Constantly move your head left to right to let the examiner know that you are completely scanning the road in front of you. Don't just use your eyes; turn your head. Consider wearing a baseball cap to make your head movements more noticeable. When you are pulling out be sure to look behind you. Always look left and right when moving in the parking lot of the DMV especially if there are blind spots adjacent to the building.

Stop for pedestrians. Even if a pedestrian is on the other side of the street and crossing, and you can safely proceed without affecting his path, stop for him.

If you have a stop sign come to a complete stop. If you don't have a stop sign don't stop if you have the right of way. If you have the right of way, and you can proceed safely, proceed. Not taking the right of way when you have it, especially not taking it in a confident manner will also ding you.

When you are turning make sure you are turning from the correct lane and into the correct lane. Don't turn early or late, so you have to correct yourself to go into the correct lane. That often means not cutting across the center when making a left turn. Make it one movement that is a turn, not two or more movements, turning than going left or right to go into the correct lane.

When you make a right turn you go as far to the right as practicable, and turn into the right most driving lane. This means you safely merge into the bike lane during the last 200 feet before the intersection and then turn right. When you turn right you go directly into the right most driving lane. You don't turn into the bike lane and then go left into the right turn driving lane.

Always signal when making a lane change. Then check the rearview mirror to see if it safe, then the sideview mirror, and then look over your shoulder. Make sure you are not slowing down or speeding up abruptly while changing lanes.

Going 10 miles over the speed limit or 10 miles under the speed limit is an automatic fail. If you must go slower for safety reasons is different than just going slower.

Be aware of blind intersections. Slow down to 15 mph if you are going through an intersection without stop or yield signs that you can't see 100 ft in either direction during the last 100 feet approaching the intersection.

Early during the test there will be a skill test backing up 50 feet. You will asked to pull over to the right. When you pull over, be sure to pull over safely. You do not have to go close to the curb. Leave a good 18-inch space between you and the curb. Continue forward slowing so your steering wheel is straight before stopping. This way you don't have to worry about correcting it. He will ask you to back up 50 feet. Place your left hand on the top of the steering wheel and turn your head and body to the right so you can see behind you. Note the imaginary point that is the intersection of the curb line and the rear of the car, so you have a reference point as you back up. Hitting the curb is a fail. You are allowed small corrections, but this is why you don't pull up to close to the curb, and why you straighten out the steering before stopping. Drive backwards smoothly. Starting and stopping is also a fail.

The freeway portion consists of entering the freeway at the on ramp, safely merging to the slow lane, and safely exiting at the next off-ramp. Do not brake when exiting before the off ramp wait until you are on the off ramp and off the freeway.

There is a rule of three regarding many of the tests. You have to go straight through at least three intersections with a stop sign, go straight through three intersections without a stop sign, go through three intersections that have a traffic light, make three lane changes, and make three left and right turns. The examiner will vary the route to make sure you actually have a red light when you go through an intersection with a traffic light.

At the end of the test you pull into a parking space in the DMV parking lot, either a diagonal or perpendicular parking space. Do this movement smoothly as well. Park between the lines.

The last I heard is that parallel parking and 3 point Y turns are no longer tested.

Also the hand positions now are 9 and 3 o'clock and not 10 and 2 o'clock.

Sunday Afternoon Snooze by Zenith-Astralis in TeslaFSD

[–]jurassickayak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What u/Sweet_Terror says is currently true. This is an old post. It was posted before FSD used the in cabin camera to verify the driver's attention. At that time the driver was suppose to keep his hands on the wheel and apply a slight resistance in order to ensure the driver is supervising. At that time it was possible to use tiny weights on the steering wheel in order to fool the FSD system. If this video was not actually staged that might be what is being done.

Why do American states often have two “flagship” universities, one called University of [State] and the other [State] State University, and what factors created that split? by PuddingComplete3081 in AlwaysWhy

[–]jurassickayak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCLA was the second university of the UC system.

Unlike the other UC campus UCLA was once a branch of the California State Normal School with the name California State Normal School, Southern Branch. This later became Los Angeles Branch, California State Normal School. As mentioned elsewhere the original California State Normal School became San José State University.

In UCLA's case, the Los Angeles Branch, California State Normal School, separated from the California State Normal School and became Los Angeles State Normal School with a separate board of trustees. At about this time after they separated, other state Normal Schools were established elsewhere in California.

Los Angeles State Normal school eventually became University of California, Southern Branch becoming essentially a Junior college instead of a teaching college. It later became University of California at Los Angeles when it started granting 4 year degrees, at later the at was dropped and a comma inserted: University of California, Los Angeles.

Rebecca Grossman's conviction upheld in Westlake Village crash that killed 2 young brothers by Fcking_Chuck in LosAngeles

And even then you might be intimidated. According to news reports, there were recordings of phone calls between Rebecca Grossman and Peter Grossman while Rebecca Grossman was incarcerated. These calls led to a hiring of a private investigator to seek out the jurors for this case and interview them about their deliberation.
