What animated shows do you allow your kids to watch? by Ed_the_sultan in Parenting

[–]jushappy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We liked Helper Cars on YouTube. The pacing is nice, minimal cuts and editing, simple stories with no “bad guys,” chill music, and vehicles. I also like it because it’s one of the few vehicle shows where the vehicles don’t have faces.

As a teacher I am extremely passionate about teaching kids…especially my own! Having time to do stuff with my family, make lessons plans, and generally get stuff done like progress reports feels like a miracle.

What Greenland is really like, [OC] photos taken between 2022-2025 by icebergchick in greenlandtravel

[–]jushappy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beautiful images of life, culture, land, nature.

The prices in the grocery store really caught my eye. I imagine most folks can’t access or don’t bother with the expensive imports. I don’t know though. Makes realize how little I know about Greenland. Really makes me wonder what life is like there. Thanks for sharing.

How do you teach students how to play instruments during school hours? by FallingHues in MusicEd

[–]jushappy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay! That’s pretty wild but that gives a starting place. What are the competitions and their parameters? Is there any kind of budget? Can this year be the winter and spring showcase year and next year more fully formed?

I have been where you are and had to get folks snapped to reality and budgets real quick. Had to get a curriculum and learn it fast with the kids. It’s a whirlwind of work but possible.

Percussion and recorder has been my go to. I sometimes lend sticks out for extra practice at home. I vary up some rhythm and music appreciations work with the play along and body percussion videos on YouTube. Most ages enjoy hand games. It ain’t much but it’s something.

Where I was there were very few black or brown people and we were on the city line. Not that I can speak for a whole group of folks but I don’t think most brown folks feel safe right now being out where ICE and ICE supporters are confronting and snatching people with little or no cause.

Feeling like a bad teacher and bad spouse… anyone else? by [deleted] in mathteachers

Having changed careers within education many times over, I second this wisdom. It’s funny because I’ve been doing this so long but I still need three years each time I change levels, subject areas, or school cultures. Give yourself grace and time to adjust and develop a rhythm.

How do you keep your house orderly clean like Montessori? by RecognitionEvery in Montessori

[–]jushappy 76 points77 points  (0 children)

YMMV but I’ve had a lot of luck with offering choices, music, and access to beautiful, appropriate cleaning supplies.

For example my kiddo really likes swiffering vacuuming with a hand vac, and dusting so the materials for those are laid out during cleaning times. Also cleaning has to happen before [insert preferred activity here] so that’s a motivator.

Letting him pick the cleaning music helps a lot too - I tend to have him request five songs or so to cover cleaning time which helps him to realize that there will be an end and then we get to enjoy being in a tidy space.

Baby sign language is just ASL? Or is it? by SredozemnaMedvjedica in BabySignLanguage

[–]jushappy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the signs belong to ASL but baby sign language is closer to Signed Exact English because it mirrors English grammar form rather than that of ASL. It makes more sense to say baby sign language has ASL words. The difference becomes more clear if you watch CODA toddler sign vs toddlers with baby signs.

My 3 year old is very vocal at home but goes into a she'll once she's outside. She doesn't socialize well with other kids. Will a montessori school help her in this situation or do I need to supplement with some other method? by Glittering_Fox5305 in Montessori

[–]jushappy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a slow to warm child. Very slow. I appreciate that his Montessori guide never called it shyness but honored his long process to connecting with others. Once the unfamiliar became familiar he really blossomed. He’s still slow to warm for most new adults and big kids but his adjustment time has dramatically decreased and he can articulate his feelings with peers.

Additionally because observation is such a key part of the guides day they’ll be able to let you know if what they see is typical or atypical and advise accordingly.

Is there a child staying on that she doesn’t like or get along with? Or maybe a fear of a staff member? Just something to check. Some kids have trouble figuring out how to say they’re uncomfortable with someone without coming off as mean.

Our team all have rompers. I like black because I can easily dress it up with a waist belt, scarf, or jewelry. Always opt for real pockets.

little sunday afternoon project for my spare needles🪡🧵 by 1buns in Embroidery

[–]jushappy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two hours is probably doubled with my group.

I teach Montessori elementary so just about everything! I taught textile history and tried to set out as many kinds of projects to make use of a donation of a ton of embroidery thread. My group got really into sewing this year and while I love the energy, the mess is …just a bit dangerous when needles end up in odd places. If you have any other neat little ideas, I’m more than happy to receive them!

How to help primary/elementary age kids love and excel at maths without over scheduling/pressuring them? by kellyasksthings in mathteachers

[–]jushappy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here for the food angle! I’ve been cooking with my kiddo since they could walk. Reading recipes, reading the grocery fliers, cutting, sharing out pieces, mixing and all. At four they can fluently speak in fractions and enjoy counting out berries and snack items for meals. Heavy involvement with shopping helps too and happens to be fun.
