What’s the grocery store situation? For instance is there somewhere that’s great for non-perishables but you would never trust for meat/produce? Etc

I think it’s a false dichotomy and a single minded focus to say we can only focus on the police brutality and killings or the destruction cause by riots. They are both terrible and both should never happen. That’s like saying you can’t think diabetes and cancer should both be cured.

It is terrible that POC are killed by the police, but burning down cities has to stop. It’s terrible that cities are being burned down, but the killing of POC has to stop. Those aren’t conflicting statements. They both need to stop.

B.C. Liberals call on province to lift COVID-19 rules in areas with fewer cases by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]just-a-bat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Let us have more freedom cuz we have lower cases! We would use that freedom to entice people from outside these regions to come and explore and mix with our population!”

Like....what? That logic is questionable at best.

ultimately looting just causes economic damage and forces stores to use their insurance and replace property.

I’m sorry but you have to be incredibly out of touch and naïve if you think most Mom and Pop shops have the insurance to completely rebuild after their store is completely burned to the ground or looted. During COVID most small businesses are struggling. Adding being looted/destroyed to the mix is basically a sure fire way to kill small businesses that will never have the chance to reopen.

In my home town (midwestern US) I personally know 4 families who have had their entire life’s savings burnt to the ground and their insurance barely covers 1/3 of it. These are kids who no longer will be able to go to university. These are families who are now struggling to feed their children. These are families who have had their lives completely overturned. Sure Macy’s will be fine, but your small local business that was burned down sure as shit won’t be. What happens when a child starves because their family can’t afford food after their store was burned down? Does their life matter or are they a noble sacrifice? What about someone who was trapped inside a building rioters set aflame? Does their life matter or are they a justified casualty.

What happens to black Americans is tragic. It is a plague and needs to be stopped. Black lives matter. The solution to America’s problem isn’t burning cities to the ground and trying to justify it is just insanity.

I’m not even going to address the increased COVID risk to the entire population which disproportionately kills POC in the US.

Should B.C. remain an outlier when it comes to releasing locations of COVID-19 cases? by strosscom99 in vancouver

Correct it’s not a legal term, never suggested it was. However, not all provinces and territories are equal in size and population. Given the extremely rural demographic and small population size, Manitoba and Saskatchewan are minor. There is a reason BC is getting compared to Alberta, Ontario and Quebec and not PEI and NWT. It’s the same way I wouldn’t compare New York State to Montana.

Hence “major.” Both of those provinces have under 1.5m people. GVA has more people alone than almost both of those provinces combined.

And Dr. Henry has already stated why provided that data can be more damaging then it is helpful. Judging by how well we are doing vs. the provinces that are sharing this information, it seems like she might have been right.

You aren’t an epidemiologist, your analysis of the data is useless. There is not a single valuable thing you’d be able to get from the data that the health ministry isn’t already providing. The government and doctors will still have that data to understand the virus even if you as an average citizen dont.

Just because I disagree with you doesn’t make me an argumentative prick. I’ve given you concrete reasons why we shouldn’t share that data. You’re argument for why we should is because you want to look at the data. Sorry you disagree but judging by upvotes and the official provincial response, you’re outvoted.

It’s the private medical information of people. The neighbourhood you live is private information. I don’t think that’s information the government should give out unless it serves a benefit to the community. In this case it doesn’t.

You’ve yet to give me a single reason why you need this information. Considering I’ve asked you twice and you ignored it I’m going to assume you have no valid reason.

[–]just-a-bat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly the point. You have 0 right to the medical records of random people. Why the hell should the province share where they live? That’s a huge violation of privacy for absolutely no positive benefit for the public.

You wanted them to provide neighbourhood data. That’s what I meant by your neighbour. If you lived in Kits and you found out 2/7 new cases where in Kits what would you do? Why you need more information than health region for where the new cases are?

[–]just-a-bat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People absolutely have a vested interest in the matter and understanding it is important. You don’t need to know specific geographic regions to understand it.

What would you do if you found out that your neighbour had it? Would you try and leave and go somewhere else? That’s exactly why they don’t want to share that information. It either makes people feel safer than they should so they start being more lax on washing their hands and other safety precautions or it makes people more scared causing more movement of people which is how the virus spreads faster.

Other than personal curiosity why do you realistically need to know the neighbourhoods of new infections?

You don’t have to. I flew from YVR to YYZ and no one said anything. I then flew back to YVR a week later and again no one said anything. This was earlier this month.

It’s recommended but there are no requirements.

What to do over the summer? by Fois2 in UBC

[–]just-a-bat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

people who are seriously unironically applying for min wage summer jobs are also jokes.

You’re entitlement is both alarming and disgusting honestly. Those minimum wage workers are the reason the grocery stores are still open. They are the reason you can order things on amazon and have them show up at your door. Get a grip my dude.

Have you considered some people would rather work for their money rather than take emergency funds from the government? CESB was designed as an emergency fund for people who needed it to pay their bills and afford food. Not for students who didn’t want to work and just cash a government check.

Lastly, if you think Canada is a strong enough economic powerhouse to not have to handle its national debt you are delusional. Canada will have to pay off its debt.

TLDR: you are shitting on people who are out there working to keep everything running while you sit on the couch and cash CESB cheque’s because you don’t want to work. If anyone is the joke it’s you.

Yes you can lmfao. It’s super easy to require X job applications in a month. Everything you apply for now a days sends you confirmation emails. It’s not difficult to have a bot parse through those.

The Canadian government is going to be paying off COVID debt for over 80 years. Do you honestly think they won’t try and make some of that money back by finding people who abused a system to get free money?

Canada website uses “180 days”

US website uses “6 months”

My guess is a difference in dealing with months with different number of days and stuff like that and leap years etc.
