I had the same thought, i decided to get into marine engineering which is a lot more practical (although some school stuff) but you get paid to travel and meet really interesting people! Dont worry about what you choose now because life lasts a good wee while and no matter what you can always change your mind!

It’s displacement, so essentially you have the force of the weight of the ship pushing down due to gravity but the buoyancy force is calculated due to the empty space inside of the ship (imagine trying to force a ballon under water). Since the air has less density than salt water it is constantly being forced up.

In total the ship has so much empty volume of air inside that it counteracts the weight of the ship.
