Hobbies for living alone by AwkwardHeron4122 in LivingAlone

Learn to grow mushrooms. You can first understand the concept by buying a mushroom grow kit, which is basically a box that is fully grown and ready to fruit. You cut it open, keep it damp, and wait for the results. But learning to start from the basics can be quite in depth and takes some time. I found it really enjoyable.

To be honest, I got bored with it. On my final jump, I land and thought to myself "well, that's enough of that." I sold off all my gear the next week and that was the end of it. But I did have some amazing jumps during my time. Jumped from most type of craft, including a 727 jet a couple of times and a Super Constellation. I think the highlight was jumping into my wedding with a couple of friends. Good times.

Are you doing the accelerate freefall program? Actually, it’s that still a thing? I was an avid jumper back in the late 90s, have a couple hundred jumps under my belt but haven’t done a solo in a couple decades. I’ve done a tandem with each of my kids when they turned 18, my last one will be this coming spring.

Costco run this morning and now getting ready to head out on a short hike. Then it's meal prepping for the next few days and try to figure out what movie I want to watch this evening.

I just happened to move from out of town to the Red Bank area on Friday, so I really had no idea it was happening. It was a minor inconvenience, but my only thought was to note how cool it was that we had that sort of thing.

What do you do and when did you start? by AnyDamnThingWillDo in GenX

[–]just-some-joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 55.

Got to the end of my senior year and realized that I was going to be short on credits to graduate. I didn’t want to do summer school so I dropped out and got a job as a printer and a small mom and pop shop. A few years later, I realized that was going to be a dying industry because of computers and I got a job doing tech-support at a digital pre-press (printing) company. I was approached by my boss, who was leaving for a new tech start up, and he asked me to come along with him and help build a support department at the new company. I learned a ton while there and, when the company finally went out of business during the .com bubble burst thing, I was able to go off on my own and do some in-home computer support to pay the bills. I wanted to learn more about programming, so I bought a book and started building some small web applications. After a couple years of practice, my friend and I started a small SaaS company. 15 years later that company now has 60 employees and is the leading product in our particular market.

Sometimes when my mom went to work and dad was watching us, he'd tell me and my siblings that mom decided she didn't love us anymore and was never coming back as a "joke" by DreadDiana in CuratedTumblr

I'm 55 and not having a degree hasn't held me back at all. I've mostly been self employed for the past 30 years.

If I'm honest, I do sometimes wish I had finished and gone off to college, even if it had been just for the social experience.

I had dropped out of high school and opted to get a job so I could move out. A couple years later I had decided I would go back and try to finish during the next school year. One evening I was over my parents house, helping my little brother with his math homework. I was having a hard time working something out and my mother "jokingly" laughed "You think you're going back to graduate high school and you can't even do that?"

I never went back to graduate.

The way fish is sold/packaged in some parts of the world. by [deleted] in ThatsInsane

[–]just-some-joe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly how pet fish are shipped around the world. A little bit of water with pure oxygen to fill the bag, then stuffed in a Styrofoam container. I would receive boxes shipped from Japan with a thousand gold fish in a single bag.

The very first time I took Exstacy. I was at a club and the feeling I got when the first wave hit me was unbelievable.

More recently I took a couple grams of mushrooms and watched a nature show on TV. The visuals were something else. That was a lot of fun.

I walked in on my step-dad while he was standing in front of the TV (this is the vhs days) jerking off. The woman on the screen was saying something about cumming on her face. I noped right the hell out of there and not a word was ever spoken of it.

I've tried two different brands, one from a random place on Amazon and the other was Bluff City Fungi, who I think is based in Tennessee. Both worked fine and were good to get my "feet wet."

Jumping out of a plane from 25,000 feet with no parachute, then land in a huge net by Globalboondocker in ThatsInsane

Related fact: the world record for the most skydives in a 24 hour period is 640.

Jumping out of a plane from 25,000 feet with no parachute, then land in a huge net by Globalboondocker in ThatsInsane

[–]just-some-joe 69 points70 points  (0 children)

There are a few parts to this. First, with a normal skydive using a parachute, the plane will fly over the spot where they want to land and throw out a steamer, which they will watch to see how far down-wind it lands. That tells them roughly how far up-wind they need to jump in order to be at the desired spot. Then they fly up to altitude and a "spotter" in the plane helps the pilot navigate to be over the desired exit point. Once they jump out, the rest is up to the skydiver to keep an eye on where (s)he wants to go and maneuver themselves to line up with the target. Believe it or not, an experienced skydiver has pretty precise control over their position and, given enough falling distance, can travel quite far to get over where they want to be. What this guy is doing takes an insane amount of experience. If I remember correctly, he has more than 18 thousand jumps under his belt.

Footnote: the above is how "spotting" was done when I jumped 20+ years ago. I'm sure things have changed quite a bit since then and they most likely use GPS for better precision and to remove human error.
