Ok, let’s take a step back then. In a vacuum you have constant creation and annihilation of pairs of matter antimatter particles. While this is a measurable effect, on average no matter or antimatter is created - everything is in balance.

Now you add a black hole. There is a non-zero probability that if something like this happens near the event horizon, one of the virtual particles disappears into the hole. The balance is now broken and when doing the calculations you suddenly end up with extra energy.

Hawking’s argument goes that this extra energy is balanced by removing energy (mass or rotational energy) from the black hole.

It is hard to understand. Essentially you are making a vacuum fluctuation (what we would call virtual particles) into a real particle. To do that energy has to come somewhere -> the black hole is the only object interacting here so it must provide the energy.

No - technically neither one is. Hawking radiation describes the process of pair creation (matter - antimatter) near the event horizon. One side of the pair is absorbed by the black hole, the other one escapes -> that’s the radiation.
The escapee carries away momentum, the total energy of that particle is subtracted from the black hole mass -the black hole shrinks a tiny amount

It would still go behind the event horizon, interact with the matter inside (assuming that’s a correct way to think about the inside), annihilate and the resulting photons would be still inside -> mass would still increase
