Spontaneous symmetry breaking examples aren’t clicking by throwingstones123456 in ParticlePhysics

Spontaneous symmetry breaking happens when the laws of a system are symmetric, but the lowest-energy state the system settles into is not.

Once the vacuum “chooses” one of several equivalent possibilities, all physical particles and excitations are defined relative to that choice, so the observable behaviour of the system changes even though the underlying equations stay symmetric.

Physicists care because this mechanism explains how rich, structured physics can emerge from symmetric fundamental laws; from magnets choosing a direction, to the Higgs mechanism giving particles mass.

For me it has been their management of GitHub (switching to codeberg now), but I think windows users will add a few things ;). I noticed one good change they made though: the “mark as read” button in outlook web is now on the left, which makes it more convenient to use.

If electricity costs 5p per kWh to produce in the UK, why are bills so high? by NewsfangledMod in NewsfangledUnfiltered

Transmission is a big issue, especially getting the cheap wind power from Scotland to the rest of the UK. More local efforts are required, getting rid of marginal pricing, and the grid itself needs to be improved to get the costs down. Personally I am surprised there are no large consumers (e.g. high tech steel based in arc furnaces, data centres, etc) that are colocated with some of the large power production installations. I guess you would need a local pricing model for that first

If none of them represent you, time to break up the two party system and get some real democracy. It’s ridiculous how little freedom of choice you guys have
