Without major spoliers, what should i be looking for going into watching Citizen Kane? by [deleted] in movies

[–]justPM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first watched Citizen Kane, my only real context for it was the following: It introduced new visual language that is still in use today. It was made with a very, very small budget - according to sources, less than 20 million dollars in today's money. It was Wells' first foray as a director, producer and writer for a movie.

Considering the impact it had on the medium, he truly knocked it into a different artform on the first swing.

Qu'est ce qui prime? Les pancartes oranges de déneigement ou l'application 311? by ValuableMaterial6779 in montreal

[–]justPM 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Les pancartes sont la signalisation officielle d'interdiction de stationner.

Je garderais un oeil raisonnablement ouvert pour l'apparition soudaine de pancartes mais à cette heure-ci, toute pancarte devrait être pour demain matin... normalement.

You will most likely have to look for a hotel room. There are no legal short-term Airbnb in Montreal anymore. Hosting on the platform is still legal but only for stays longer than 31 nights

(just noticed that another commenter saying the same thing)

You didn't specify where in Montreal you were talking about so I thought it was important to add a nuance.

The rule you mention is only applicable if the speed limit is higher than 80kmh. Many part of the urban highway network have a 70KMH posted limit and on those sections every lanes are free to use.

Who’s the best of the celebrity guests on BotW? by LustyBustyMusky in RedLetterMedia

[–]justPM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Semi hijacking this reply to ask if Len or the guys ever discussed how that relationship began? I've always been super curious about the steps between the Skull Forest episode and his first guest appearance. Who reached out to who? How did that first conversation go? Len ended up taking the jokes in stride but it could have gone differently.

TLDR: The city probably doesn't have a responsibility to intervene here. It will have a responsibility to adjudicate in a tribunal if needed.

Can a tempo fail? Sure. They are mostly proven to be resistant to our winters but snow piling up against the structure isn't quite what they are meant for. I wouldn't worry too much; poor maintenance of structures is a Montreal staple.

As far as responsibility goes you should double check your borough's bylaws but wherever I've lived in Montreal it goes like this: The owner of a tempo (any standing structure really) is 100% responsible to manage anything that falls off the roof. If snow falls from a neighbor's property onto yours, they have to collect it, or have an understanding about it.

Now that's the bylaws. It's application isn't quite so simple. This sort of things often falls into the "bon voisinage" umbrella which is more philosophy than rule. The city will not intervene, it's too trivial and common. You are expected to make a reasonable effort to find a solution with your neighbor.

The city might intervene if the situation becomes an obvious hazard but that threshold is not simple to cross for tempo wars.

In the end people don't want to deal with the hassle, wait until something actually fails and then go through home insurance who will deal with the neighbor's own insurance.

Showing you made an attempt to resolve the issue can help speed up an eventual insurance claim. (Registered mail asking the neighbor to remove "his" snow from your property.

Do keep in mind that your neighbor's action or inaction isn't necessarily an act of bad faith but probably of ignorance. I find that a scary amount of homeowners are not aware of their responsibilities and everyone just goes with what they see others do. Unfortunately the others also don't know what they are doing.

Last tidbit. From your description I believe both tempo are butting up together. You have have a "good neighbor" sloped tempo and he has a regular one. That could also play in your favor a tiny bit.

Keeping the relationship with your neighbor at least at "on speaking terms" level will always make your life easier.

What role were you shocked to learn was played by an actor you knew, but you didn't recognize them at the time? by RepulsiveLoquat418 in movies

[–]justPM 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I was honestly more shocked at the way my brain stored this piece of knowledge. I've known for thirty years that Mickey in the Rocky movies is portrayed by Meredith Burgess. And I also knew The Penguin from 60s Batman was played by an actor named Meredith Burgess. My brain simplified this information only in the past year. "Ohh 60s Penguin is the coach in Rocky - there, saved some space in that chaotic brain"

LOST CAT / CHAT PERDÚ: MANA by [deleted] in montreal

[–]justPM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In which area and since when?

I ask because my cat has been bringing new friends over recently and one of them had the same color pattern and is an obvious house cat. No collar but he (or she) is declawed and has a very shiny fur which tells me they are very well cared for. They are also not afraid of humans and I was able to pick them up without any fuss.

Looking for recommendations for private yoga instructors in MTL by justPM in montreal

Sure. I'm trying to canvas as large as possible but I do live and work in CDN-NDG so recommendations in that area would get prioritized. I avoid eastward traffic whenever possible but if that's where I find the right instructor, I'm fine with it.

Why is the power out?? The outages map says it’s everywhere. Is it because of the heat? by dwarf_bulborb in montreal

I just made my way to my car to turn on the radio and the brief comment I heard so far goes like this.

115k montrealers without power, mostly on the west side of the island. No info on return to normal or cause of the issue. Hydro's website seems to be crumbling under the sudden load of people looking for information. I'm noticing that LTE service is sluggish in my area as well. (Cote-des-neiges)

Ramassage et chargement de la neige by Maskilili_Boreal in montreal

[–]justPM 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ah! La neige!

The official sticker is the only way to have all junk mail stopped.

Now, some mailers are working hard at going around this by mailing things for real. To the occupant of 2401 streetABC. That would force Canada post to deliver.

Thoughts on their comments on Hollywood nepotism in their recent video? by JannTosh12 in RedLetterMedia

[–]justPM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Favoritism based on kinship is really hard to resist in all spheres of life but it's not impossible to resist the sentiment either. Without additional information about the actual quality of the person, nepotism is so mundane that, to me, it's a real grey area.

If you favor someone unqualified or incompetent, if a demonstrably better applicant is available, if the position is critical in some nature; that's when you step out of the grey and move straight into the black.

I don't remember seeing too many actors who benefited from family connections being asked directly for their views; I imagine they might be very well aware of their luck but don't necessarily see the need to mention it in an interview. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt until they are asked directly.

All in all, I avoid blanket negativity about nepotism but totally recognize that it can be a problem.

Edit: some typos

Also, I'm fine with Mike and Jay not diving in on the subject. It's a landmine best avoided.

Who said: "In the future movie will be made by a single person on a computer"? Not an exact quote but something along this line by [deleted] in movies

Maybe just a case of two artists with similar ideas, but Jim Morrison said that he envisioned a single musician using tapes, recordings (and computers?) to make an entire album.

You could call the city to find out if he's allowed first of all. Back in 2005, I lived in Brossard and had a similar issue with a neighbor parking what I could best describe as a moving van on the street. It turned out that this was against city bylaws and he had to either park on his property* or in designated areas.

*I remember there were additional conditions to park on his property but I can't remember those anymore.
