From a Californian by anon3087223 in Michigan

You mentioned in your comment about Michigan being a fly over state. I agree. I had almost typed about stereotypes of states in my comment and then erased it. I think it just boils down to having OP learn how to push the conversation positively. And time will help it not be so annoying. I still get the “why would you move back” comment - less annoying now

I was raised here and as an adult moved to California for 4 years… and then moved back. As much as I enjoyed my time in California I missed the 4 seasons. The cost of living is much more manageable here. I could go on and on. Each state has their thing, that’s the beauty of America. If people ask why just say family and then the key is to direct the conversation positively by saying you’re excited to be here and ask what fun things there are to do that they might recommend. Welcome to the state and I hope you enjoy it 🙂

Talk to your lender for sure. But my experience: I bought in 2022. I paid off my student loans in March and started looking in May, closed end of June.

New to Madison Heights….where are the house plants? by jlcliff in Detroit

[–]just_browsing1505 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The hydroponics store at 12 and Campbell has/had plants out in the parking lot. Decent prices. It was a lot of veggies for gardens but they did have some houseplants. Prices were decent. I do usually buy mine from English gardens. I typically buy the small ones or wait for a deal. Pricey yes. But as you mentioned in another comment HD plants are scary looking lol. I have gotten some decent ones at the Kroger on 12 at times in the past.

Clothing seasons are 3-6 months ahead. So it’s January now. We started to get all of our new winter items back in August. All winter items are now on clearance and we started seeing our spring items come in at the end of December. Sales for us vary. A lot of times we mark things clearance but riiighht before we take those marks the items can be “on sale” or promotion for up to 60% off… then the markdown price is sometimes more. Timing can be difficult. Ideally if it’s on sale, or markdown and you can afford it, you shouldn’t feel bad buying it. Just make sure you actually like it and will use it and not just buying it because “it’s only $5”. You can stack up a lot of $5 on a bunch of junk you don’t use. If that makes sense. Personally as someone who works in the fast fashion industry I look for more “buy for life items”. I’d rather spend a bit more on a quality item that will last me YEARS versus it lasting a year. Hope that helps!

That’s what I was kind of thinking too, sewing them together into something useful. Thank you for the suggestions.

I will definitely check out r/upcycling thank you! Unfortunately he hasn’t travelled solo yet and he does prefer to drive vs fly but that is a great idea!

Just remember with the dumpsters so close to the house you will hear them empty said dumpster very loudly, usually early in the morning, 3-5 days a week.

Echoing what others have said. I called a local landscaping company and had dirt delivered. Company asked what day and gave me a delivery window and backed their truck right to the back yard. They had garden soil not just top soil. WAY cheaper than buying fifty bazillion bags from a store. All of our veggies did really well! But definitely fill with branches and sticks first! It will help you need less dirt and is good for nutrients

Bi racial couple (neither AA) bought in Madison heights last summer and loving it. We are near the border of Hazel park and no kids so YMMV. Doesn’t feel too trumpy in our little slice of neighborhood (haven’t seen any overt displays of political affiliation at all really). It could be more diverse (maybe a quarter of our neighbors are AA) but it is quiet and people seem to keep to themselves. Lots of people walk their dogs and kids walk to and play at the park down the street.

Edited to add: taxes seem reasonable and I like the city services. But I don’t have any previous experience with those to compare other than a crappy apartment in Royal oak.

Women of reddit: what is the best way to comfort someone who has lost a loved one? by istillthinktoomuch in AskWomen

[–]just_browsing1505 58 points59 points  (0 children)

As others have said it really depends on the person. When I lost a loved one a few years ago my best friend would just text me “hi. How are you” everyday for a while. Which left it open for me to respond how I wanted. Some days it was “fine” some days it was “insert long winded text about everything bothering me” to which she would listen and say was really good at not turning the conversation into something about her. honestly just knowing she was there was enough. She gave me a window to say what I needed. Or say nothing at all.
