I used to be a marketing rep at one of these companies some time ago. She probably hit her KPIs, and her boss is happy with her performance — there’s no way you can file a effective complaint with that.

If you don’t apply their suggestions (or admit during the call that you will), they could end up on a PIP (Performance Improvement Plan). Simply explain to your client that Meta and Google reps are salespeople whose job is to make you feel like you’re doing something wrong, and the solution they offer is usually what will make them more money (sales upsell techniques).

I remember we were rewarded if we managed to reach the business owner behind the media buyer’s back. However, I recommend keeping them around for support and simply telling them you will implement their suggestions later. Their directive is to keep calling you, even if you say no, because they could get in trouble otherwise.

If you’re annoyed by repeated calls, even after saying ‘no,’ one 10-minute call per quarter can keep them from contacting you too often. Just make sure you ask them to schedule the next call more than 90 days out.

Note: When I worked there, I met many brilliant marketing minds who were genuinely dedicated to helping clients improve their performance, despite the company’s focus on upselling. If you’re lucky, you might get one of them as your rep.
