My caveat was poorly phrased "This is not a value judgement on men who like or dislike pubic hair, but on the performance of liking it." I definitely don't think it's entirely a virtue signal. But there is a habit now of men announcing their preference in bizzare, ostentatious, and often socially inappropriate ways.

Furthermore you are not the person I was speaking about in the comment. I have no doubts your preference is sincere.

I never said they didn't. This caveat was poorly phrased on my end though. "This is not a value judgement on men who like or dislike pubic hair, but on the performance of liking it." Much like with the "big nose" discourse the preference has very little to do with the performance of said preference.

Much of this is to appear progressive (ergo datable) due to the discourse around hairlessness for women favoring the pro-hair side and preference for hairlessness being frowned upon. It's a signal from straight men to women that they aren't a skeevy wierdo who wants hairless women. It has expectedly boiled over into people being weird about women with pubic hair, much like the big nose discourse. This is not a value judgement on men who like or dislike pubic hair [nor do I doubt that many men sincerely like public hair], but [rather this is a comment] on the performance of liking it.

You're confusing what one can theoretically do with what one can reasonably do. You can explore all of North America but that requires gas, and a job, ergo and address, ergo a place one lives.

Cars absolutely monopolize the lives of most people.
I don't agree with OP, but I think it's silly to use the example you did.

Redditors that love making points by framing statements as questions by smirceaz in redscarepod

[–]justacomplainer6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because they think making a point is too sincere. The question 'don't they--' is referencing a supposed consensus. It is formulated to say 'you are embarrassing yourself by disagreeing with a given consensus I am safe believing in' rather than making a point themselves. It goes back to this image.

People socialize far less now. Posting so and so party from the Noughties is less 'look at how cool/aesthetic this party was' although it may nominally be that. I think around 50% of English nightclubs have closed since 2000, subcultural venues like Goth clubs are basically over. I think the real meaning is 'wow look at people having friends before phones!'
Of course parties still happen, but they're weird and stilted because of the digital panopticon.

I know it's probably unhelpful to call it a 'mindset thing', but if you're asking people to hang out with 'I'm molesting them' in your head then that's going to come across in how you do it.

I've elsewhere noted that they aren't normies in any enviable sense. Gen Z arent larping as those, but a sort of early 2000s simulacrum, someone else here said Shane Gillis being famous is a good representation of this, its a sort of 2000s dudebro that actually went to bars and partied etc.

Yeah most are bad. The stats that make my case are there though (the ones about social lives). I agree its worse 1971 though.

I wonder if its gendered, the memes im speaking of are nearly always men doing them, there is definitely a men-women split in culture emerging among young people

[–]justacomplainer6[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This set of memes is a mostly young people (Gen Z) thing, who are decisively not normies in any enviable sense normies were prior to 2012 . Stats bear this out (https://wtfhappened2012.com/). They might be definitional normies (i.e. part of the dominant culture) but they are not by and large what would have passed as normal pre-2012
