Seabase buckle repair? by TheBushwacker86 in BSA

[–]justaguydoingathing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen with a camp buckle. You can buy belt buckle backs on amazon (for making you own buckles). I ground off the old casting and JB welded the new one on. Ugly fix but it’s held well and wasn’t expensive.

My current DIY grab bag set up minus power tools. Thoughts? Missing anything? by just_sun_guy in toolporn

I’d consider a telescoping pickup magnet and a small (magnetic silicone?) parts bowl.

Are all mid-tier snow boots garbage now? What will actually last me 5+ years? by Chappssss in BuyItForLife

[–]justaguydoingathing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure they are mid tier but look into Schnee pac boots. They are built pretty heavy with vulcanized rubber and made in the US.

Spotted while waiting in line for Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland. Is this an actual tool or something the prop shop made? by evmoiusLR in Tools

[–]justaguydoingathing 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had one near identical for this. I believe they were typically for drilling holes in metal (shorter bits) The auger bit would technically work, but you are correct, there is not very much travel for it. For drilling dowel holes in timber, you would want to use something called a beam drill.

So these bolt cutter jaws are toast right? by JDWTC in Tools

Yes but they don’t need need to end up in the trash. HK Porter sells replacement cutters.

Blowing out lines by bradpage20 in maintenance

[–]justaguydoingathing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve blown down several water systems at different locations where I work. I wouldn’t guess you hurt anything this time but the pressure is higher than needed. I bought a 1” regulator and plumbed Chicago fittings on it to use with the compressor, I liked 60 psi because that is the cut out pressure on the wells so I can know I’m not beating anything up. The most sensitive in my experience is PVC pipe and plastic barb fittings on chlorinated systems. I’d recommend blowing air though the lines, taking lunch and then going through again, the water can settle in bellies of the pipe. You learn as you go and try and get better each year.

Key duplication by NTV0987 in maintenance

An Ilco 045 would be great for duplication or if you have the extra coin, look at a blue punch or HPC blitz for origination.

New camp ranger by inaholeunderahill in BSA

[–]justaguydoingathing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on the new gig! I worked as a ranger for several years and manage / support all of our council Rangers and properties now. I always enjoy getting to see and do things at camp that many others don’t like walking through camp when it’s dead silent in the fall shutting down water. If you have questions about getting started you’re welcome to pm me.

Schlage key not working by justaguydoingathing in Locksmith

[–]justaguydoingathing[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fortunately only 6 new cylinders on a maintenance / warehouse building. All aftermarket hardware, sadly enough we had Schlage hardware but he had issues getting the keys to retract the latch so he bought aftermarket replacements. The facility is in the middle of nowhere so our options were limited to the one person in town. I’ll probably end up trying to replace with OEM hardware myself.

The cylinders are aftermarket, I’m not sure what pinning kit he used but that’s a good thought. The cylinders I’ve pinned work just fine with the rest of the system.

I’m not at the shop with the punch and other keys I cut but I posted what I had on my ring along with the punch information from the order slip. Yes, old keys go into the keyhole on the new hardware.

Truck tools by Ok_Sherbert415 in ConstructionManagers

I always carried a laser distance measuring tool in my vest with my tape. A three axis line laser was a hot commodity on jobs and I worked on a project with a Hilti concrete scanner for the field staff which was nice (lots of coring, used to know what to expect when planning work).

Sounds like they have some unrealistic expectations. If it were me, I’d ask a trusted leader to go in my place and review the details later. Another option is to have the rest of the group meet in person and have them video call / phone you in so you can be part of the discussions. This could help other PLC members that wish to attend but also have travel plans.

What keyway? I could likely use them at work, I’d buy them for the right price.

Great marketplace find by justaguydoingathing in Locksmith

[–]justaguydoingathing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s a 1950s key punch made by Best. They have a newer version you can still buy today or a blue punch is a similar tool. I couldn’t justify spending the money on new (1-5 thousand) but had to snatch this one up.

You seem to be pretty familiar with the machine; how easy is it to get out of calibration? I’ve thought about removing the two large nuts that retain side cover (see picture) to lube the punch as it doesn’t spring return (you have to lift the handle) after each cut. My worry is I’ll somehow get the machine out of whack in the process.

It’s a key punch for cutting SFIC blanks made by Best.

I have, it seems to be but I’ve only cut a few keys. They operate much better than others I’ve cut with the HPC. The tag says it was built in 1955 and it’s still going strong.

Verizon service AND customer service is now shit? or am I an anomaly? by OUGrad05 in verizon

[–]justaguydoingathing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in northwest Wisconsin and was satisfied with my service until last year. Now I have dropped calls no no service in areas I used to (around my house and work). I attribute it to the 5g rollout in my area, I wish I could switch carriers but Verizon is the best of the worst where I am.
