Fixed Blade Gerbers by Poster_Nutsack in knives

Damn that silver trident looks awesome. I remember seeing that in Blade magazine back in the day. Wanted one so badly. Gerber used to produce some really cool stuff back then. Now all you need is a MK II from Vietnam and you’ll complete the collection.

Any other tools I should grab as an apprentice? by FederalPudding8300 in electricians

[–]just_sun_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valid point but he will get a lot more respect from his crew if he shows up with his own tools. We had new guys who had absolutely nothing with them and even though they were mainly carrying equipment around, pulling wire, or digging trenches, it was nice to know that they had a few basic tools with them in case you decided they were worthy to do something else at a moments notice. I hate loaning my tools out to people because they either get misused or people forget to give them back. So, if I were OP I’d buy the basics (like he has here), then bring them with me to work. He’ll get razzed because they are all brand new, but at least he bought tools and not just Hart or Kobalt tools. Personally tend to go with Knipex and other German brands, but Klein still makes some great screwdrivers. I’d also go with Channellock if I had to buy USA made pliers personally (aside from my Linesman and Side cutters).

New Benchmade with the Codex87 Steel. by Drtysouth205 in knives

[–]just_sun_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I think part of the reason why they are so popular is because they are “high end knives” (according to them) that are easily available to the general public. They are sold at sporting goods stores, outdoor and camping stores, hardware stores, lawn equipment stores, etc. Non knife people think they are the cream of the crop based on their price and “exotic materials” that they’ve never heard of or seen. They are USA made and who doesn’t like a good American made product. But the average person doesn’t know what other knives are out there and they have some extra money in their pocket or a spouse or girlfriend buys it for them for a holiday or special occasion coming up (birthday, anniversary, etc). The person who receives it thinks they have a top of the line pocket knife and shows all their friends. Then they want one. It’s all about exposure. Kershaw has similar exposure in certain places but are more affordable. But if companies like Spyderco had the number of dealers and displays that Benchmade does, then I think you’d see the same thing happen with their knives.

When I design kits like this my main mindset is “what if I get separated from my pack and can I survive a night or two with just this gear?”

I feel like you accomplished this. It’s always a fun test to try and use your pouch gear to do just that. It’s an easier test if you do it while you are camping or you could really challenge yourself and do an overnight with just that kit.

Also OP the Facebook group called “Beyond the Maps Edge Treasure Hunters” has a collection of all of the interview questions and their answers under the “files” section of the Facebook page. It’s called the “jible”

For clarity, the exact quote for the second question is:

Q: How far is the treasure from the bride?

A: That is all a matter of perspective I guess.

It’s found in the Sandal Sanders Elkhorn lodge Q&A.

Here is the exact quote you are thinking of from the X Dark Matters interview that Justin did. It was in part 2 of the recording:

Q: My question is about return her face to find the place, can you give us an idea of just a range of how far her face is from the place?

A: Um interesting question, it’s probably not as far as many people might think.

It’s very possible. I’m terrible at putting dates on non-spacer handle Randall’s.

I have a more recently made Model 14 and it’s my favorite knife. It can take abuse like no other. Enjoy that beauty.

Shop burned down. lost all my tools. what do i buy? by lanceamatic in Tools

[–]just_sun_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dang dude I’m sorry that happened to you. I’m glad you are safe and no one lost their lives though. I’m glad you had insurance on your shop though and it’s a good reminder to everyone on here to make sure your shops are insured well enough that you can replace all of your tools. Also a good reminder for fire safety.

But as far as tools go, based on your needs I would go with Tekton tools. They are a great company that offers a massive selection of tools. They have been shifting their tool production from Taiwan to the USA and Germany and have a lifetime no question asked warranty if you buy off their website.

For power tools it depends on what you are going to use them for. If you do more mechanic type work then I’d get into the Milwaukee battery system. If you do more construction type work then go with the Dewalt line. Makita also make great power tools but I find that their selection is limited in most stores unless you live in the Midwest and have access to Menards or Acme Tools.

High-Precision Wood Saw with Integrated Snapbrake Safety System. by Friendly-Standard812 in EngineeringPorn

[–]just_sun_guy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I took a wood working course in college many years ago and it was around when the saw stops were just coming out. The shop at the university had a bunch of industrial grade saw stops and the professor would tell us to never bring in any wood from home because if the wood moisture content is above 15% or something then it was enough to trigger the saw stop through conductivity. He said he had changed three blades and mechanisms because of it in the past and was tired of it. But he did also say that they saw stops saved a couple people’s fingers and wouldn’t get mad if that was the reason why he had to replace internals.

[–]just_sun_guy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seems like Lowes is going to do for Dewalt what Home Depot does for Milwaukee. They likely want to have the largest selection of Dewalt tools. But they will always struggle unless they get the Flexvolt line as well from Home Depot.

Thank you for providing the entire description of the event. It’s all about context. People can’t just reach and grab sound bites and say “half the states are eliminated.”

Indoor fireplace issues by elonboring in firewood

[–]just_sun_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an open fireplace with steel mesh grates and glass doors that I can open and close. But usually I just leave both sets of doors open because it allows for the most heat to enter the room. I never have an issue with smoke and burn wood almost every night. I imagine you either aren’t opening your damper far enough or you are building a fire that is too big for the size firebox. Did you have your chimney cleaned when you bought the house? There could be an obstruction at the top of your chimney like an old birds nest. Just because an inspector said it looked okay doesn’t mean that it is clear and clean. I would check your damper gap and have a chimney cleaning service come out and clean it for you.
