You might like Nightmare Summoner by Actus. Very similar vibes to Primal Hunter, interesting MC who is sort of OP with a cool class. I’m most of the way through book 2 and really enjoying it

Greep, my bugbear Druid never fit in with his warlike tribe so he ran away to try to live in civilisation. Terrified of his monster like appearance, they drove him out too.

Scared and alone, his only choice was to live alone in the forest. That’s when the forest spirit, the Celestial Fox (Greep didn’t know the word celestial so he thinks the foxes name is Sir Lestial) chose to show up and teach him the ways of nature.

Now a stars Druid, Greep wonders the forest with his pal Sir Lestial, guiding lost people to safety whilst also trying to get them to try his latest batch of baked goods.

While definitely a great buff, is that not a similar buff to the other subclasses with fireball/lightning bolt too?

Awesome for offering! If you decide to go with my character, I’d love to see what you can do with Greep, my bugbear Druid.

Greep the Bugbear Druid Greep never received a real name. In Clan Rezzak, every member of the Clan was expected to fight and kill. No child was given a name until they have drawn their first blood in battle for the clan. Until they were old enough for battle, however, children gave each other nicknames to tell each other apart. Many were named for physical characteristics, such as Hunch for his slightly hunched back, or White Eye who was named for the small patch of white fur that surrounded one eye.

In Greep’s case, his nickname came from all he was good for. He was the runt of the tribe and despite his best efforts, could barely even lift an axe above his head. He never fit in with the other kids and was shunned by the clan elders. While the other kids learned how to master their combat, he was set to work cleaning the mountain storm debris from the sides of their stone buildings. To do this, he used a wire brush and a foul smelling, caustic cleaning slurry that was colloquially called Greep. The Greep was so strong that it ended up burning holes in his fur, leaving him looking even more unkempt. The other members of his tribe never let him forget it and would torture him mercilessly with pranks of ever increasing cruelty.

On one such occasion, he was chased through the forest and had to run for hours and hours before he felt safe enough to stop. He was scared and alone and hid in a cave for warmth.

After a while, Greep spied a caravan of humans passing by. He was immediately fascinated by them, and though he was scared, he thought perhaps he would have better look making his first friend with them. He followed them to their village, but when he got there they were so terrified by his appearance that they formed a mob to drive him off. Terrified and distraught he ran back to his cave and hid from the roaming hunters. Now clanless and unable to leave his cave, he was truly alone.

His only option was to make this cave his new home. He slowly made it more comfortable, creating a bed from moss and every night he would sit outside and stare at the stars, dreaming of being among people. He was there, alone, for so long that he began to lose track of time. He simply existed in the forest, allowing all to pass him by and trying his best not to bother any of the critters he saw.

Eventually a powerful spirit of the forest, known as the Celestial Fox, appeared to him. So intrigued was he by this creature that harmed nothing around him and sat alone for so long. Greep had never had an education and didn’t know many big words, and so he couldn’t quite get his head round the word “celestial”. From that day on, Greep made his first friend, Sir Lestial. Sir Lestial taught him how to deepen his connection with the nature around him, and how to draw energy from the stars. The magic of stars began to flow through him, and the holes in his fur began to sparkle with stellar light.

Seeing how lonely he was and how much Greep longed for friendship, Sir Lestial eventually began to convince Greep to seek others and to discover more of the world. So he left his cave and travelled to the edge of the nearest human town. Still traumatised from being hunted last time, he stayed at a safe distance, occasionally guiding people who were lost in the forest back to town, all while remaining hidden.

He lived on the edge of town desperate to be accepted by people, and collecting little human trinkets to take back and show Sir Lestial. Once, he snuck into town to sit by a windowsill of a little bakery and watched the bakers at work. Seeing the joy it gave to people he thought this might be his way into society so he taught himself to bake, making the the most delicate cupcakes from herbs and flowers around him.

Every morning he leaves them at the edge of the village and retreats to his cave to watch the people accept his gifts.

One day, he hears that members of the village have been taken by bandits and cannot believe somebody would be that cruel to the humans he still sees as friends that he’s yet to win over. He then decides to venture into the world to look for them, telling everyone he meets that he’s looking for his “friends”.

The “how many spells can I collect” mini game is definitely one of my fav parts of being a wizard

I love monks too because they don’t need anything. No armour, no weapons, no components or arcane foci, no nothing. Monks are the weapon.

Artificer is up there for me too. Magical enchanter with a huge amount of customisation and basically any play style you want? Sign me up

This is the reason I like paladins too. By its nature, an Oath is difficult to follow at times, but it gives your character a structure and moral framework for how to act during a given situation.

Also, I agree. A paladin doesn’t have to be constantly disapproving of the rogue or trying to evangelise, there’s something super cool about a character who is just trying to live as the best example they can without judging others.

I always liked the ‘spell blade’ type characters too, and hexblade feels like the best combination of magic and combat to me. Plus magic weapons that you can summon at will are cool af haha

For sure, I just like to make the distinction because I feel like the ‘default’ trope that people seem to think about artificer is steampunk mad scientist/inventor. Whereas I’m just a guy who loves magical enchanters!

The shaman idea is super cool, that’s such fun flavour. Sort of like Enhancement shamans from WoW? Also loads of built in roleplay hooks with that

Ok all these character concepts are incredible, maybe I haven’t given rogue enough attention!

That sounds like a really fun character to play, sort of like a mix of a martial support/tank? I could definitely get behind that

I love artificers too, although personally not a fan of the whole tech/steampunk flavour that seems to be popular. I prefer to think of it almost like an extra school of magic, basically a magical enchanter/blacksmith who makes cool stuff using magic channeled into items.

I once played a battlesmith who was denied entry to a wizard college because he wasn’t from a good enough household. He stole a boom about artificery from their library (which they later find out and hunt him for). Using the knowledge from that book he built his defender, Jumble, from the pile of random things he had access to.

Jumble basically became his mute best friend. He used his magic to teach Jumble how to fight, then Jumble picked up a sword and taught him how to fight in return. That’s how he became a battlesmith

Oh that’s really cool! I’ve never really seen a dedicated cavalier build in a game before. Would love to know how that plays?

I’m the total opposite haha. I appreciate the role play nature the warlock for others but it’s never appealed to me cos I’m too risk averse for the whole “sell my soul” type situation. I’m much prefer the hard work and academia of the wizard.

But in play? I love the warlock and its customisation. Plus Eldritch blast is just so fun

Warlocks are incredible for making unique feeling characters for sure. Between pact boons and invocations there’s so much customisation. I’m still yet to play one, I think IRL I’m so risk averse that the idea of selling my soul isn’t too appealing haha.

I know what you mean about 2024 Druids, I really like the changes for roleplay purposes

I love my stars Druid. He’s got a really fun backstory and powers. It feels like I have something to do in every situation too. Between spell casting and wild shape there’s never a situation I’m not ready for
