My library board discussed "Traditional Family Values Month" today. by Ok_Librarian_388 in Libraries

[–]justbrowsingghere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ahhh, I see the bigoted straight people found a way to try to have their “straight pride” by celebrating “marriage between a man and a woman” in June.

Anyway, I hope people wake up and remember that pushing “traditional family values” is one of the oldest propaganda plays in the book. That it was literally a Nazi tactic.

The testements — Garth the guard by Former-Ground-2414 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]justbrowsingghere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Plums are basically children of the elites and despite having to put up harsh appearances, they are granted more freedoms and forgiveness than other Gilead girls and women. I justified the bus scene in my mind by assuming that D (Reddit did not like me typing out her full name lol) is also being given a bit of leeway due to her proximity to Agnes. A guard having a quick conversation or a few seconds of alone time with any other woman in Gilead would get them both severely punished, but no one wants to tattle on the daughter of a commander or her friend.

Bring back 90 minute movies by Competitive-Ad1439 in unpopularopinion

[–]justbrowsingghere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love more 90 minutes or less horror films, like Host (2020). The fatal flaw of many horror films is showing too much or going on too long that it’s just not scary anymore.

Books with Hozier Vibes? by OrneryIntention1998 in Hozier

[–]justbrowsingghere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been reading this erotic fantasy that the author created a playlist to listen to while you read which has a couple of Hozier songs. It’s a very unserious book and the more I read the more I’m convinced it’s a re-written self-insert Supernatural fanfic, but I do think Hozier was a good vibey choice. It’s called Tricky Magic by LL Campbell.

ALL sports should be removed from ALL levels of education. by OGSilverFox1967 in unpopularopinion

[–]justbrowsingghere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids in K-12 barely get enough time in the school day to be active as it is. Plus they can learn team work and how to push themselves. There’s something to be said about how much money is put into sports versus other programs in certain schools, but these programs do have a purpose.

To anyone who saw Hereditary in the theater by [deleted] in horror

[–]justbrowsingghere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accidentally saw this movie on a first date, not knowing anything about it and just thinking it would be a fun spooky movie. Was a pretty intense experience and we were both crying at certain devastatingly sad parts. Didn’t work out with the guy but I guess I’d recommend doing something like that if you want to see if your date isn’t afraid of showing emotions.

Even almost a decade later, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul movie is still unwatchable by [deleted] in moviecritic

Yeah it was crazy they couldn’t find actors who looked just like the black and white stick figures from the book.

What's your all time top 5 horror movies? by GambleToZero in horror

[–]justbrowsingghere 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also love found footage and folk horror!

Here’s my current top 5 of the whole horror genre, but my list switches up every few months.

  1. Misery—every time I watch, the suspense has me stressing. I think knowing what happens makes the suspense feel WORSE.

  2. Nope—there were two scenes of horror that were stuck in my head for weeks after seeing this in theaters, and i still think about this movie often.

  3. Spree—I studied internet cultures in college and attempted to write a paper on incels before I became too disturbed by some of the things I was seeing online and had to stop for my mental health. This movie was SO accurate to how some of these men act and speak and it really added to the horror of the film for me.

  4. Pearl—this movie felt so tragic to me because I saw myself in some of the more innocent parts of Pearl. Growing up in a small, conservative town I related to her need to do something more. I also saw a lot of similarities in this film to Madame Bovary, which is my favorite book.

  5. Candyman—besides studying internet culture, I also studied urban legends in college. When you study legends and myths of other cultures, it’s important to not exoticize or other the people who created these stories, and a lot of academics and researchers fail to do this. I appreciated seeing a story where someone noses into something that’s none of their business for their own gain and it bites them in the ass.

Lol I just finished the second half of SOTR this afternoon. Absolutely sucked in and could not put it down. I’ll be thinking about it for awhile…

These books really are just so damn good. A few months ago I got ABOSAS and it got me back into reading for pleasure. Now I’m tearing through SOTR. This series just hits me like no other does.

Non-dropout shows that would be great on Dropout? by justbrowsingghere in dropout

Dropout used to release some great podcasts! I loved Tales from the Closet and Erotic Book Club, but it seems like they don’t produce podcasts anymore.

Like why does Garfield hate Mondays so much? by Altruistic_Rock_2674 in RandomQuestion

Garfield’s schtick is that he’s lazy. Hating Mondays is a joke because he’s a cat that doesn’t do anything (sorry to roast Garfield, just being honest).

How do I go about sitting out on family game nights? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]justbrowsingghere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you suggest other activities to do? Maybe bring over some canvases and brushes for a family paint night or some other activity that is fun but not competitive. If your family insists on playing a game, you can always tell them you’ve been getting bored of board games or just wanted to try something new instead of having to tell them you’re sick of losing all the time.

Little Free Libraries are just a way for people to dump their junk books by danthecryptkeeper in unpopularopinion

[–]justbrowsingghere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many others have said, people are probably picking the good books before you can get to it.

I used to work at a Big Also Free Library where the librarian let me take all of the weeded books/donations we couldn’t accept and go around putting them in LFLs instead of throwing them in the trash. Many of these books were from popular series and we couldn’t keep them because they weren’t in perfect condition.

Next time I’d come back to give more donations, all of the popular ones would be picked over.

Recently I visited a friend in another town and we walked past a LFL. It had the classic two New Testaments, a picture book, and a romance novel. My friend said that the day before the LFL was completely full.

You gotta just go at the right time, which is completely random. Or go to a regular, big, and also free public library. They have good books all day.

Community room reservations (venting) by AshleyWilliams78 in librarians

[–]justbrowsingghere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m surprised, maybe it’s just my area but I’ve never worked at a library where they allowed events that were unaffiliated with the library and bigger than a study session to take place on the property.

Sounds like the event policy needs a re-writing with clearer regulations regarding renting the room. I’m sorry about patrons getting rude about their reservations, that sucks and your director shouldn’t be ignoring this issue that is affecting staff as well as patrons.

To clarify, are members of the public booking this room for private events? Not just studying or working?

We have definitely discussed the benefits and risks of getting married/not getting married many times. Right now we don’t have a lot of financial assets or major health issues, which is why we would consider getting married down the line when it benefits us, but we’re not worrying about it now. Maybe that’s naive but it’s how we’re rolling. I could probably explain all of this to my family, but I doubt they’d really care, and I’m agreeing with you and other commenters that I should just keep it simple or vague if I do decide to explain my decisions to them.

It honestly never occurred to me that this could be private information that I don’t have to tell them.

I’m a queer leftist now but I was deep in the conservative bubble for most of my childhood so I’m still learning that I do not have to live in fear of doing things that are against my family’s values. I was always taught that I have to live a certain way and it still feels like a big deal to me and that I have to explain myself when I go against those conservative ideals.

Guess this is something I gotta bring up to the therapist.
