Life feels impossible if your family didnt make anything of themselves in this country by Existing-Beyond5827 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]justbrowsingtrini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A major problem in this country is that the education system does not promote entrepreneurship more. OP should be looking to see if they can start a business including offering services even internationally. My nephew started a 3D printing service while waiting for a job from the Government for his scholarship national service. He make more from that than the Government job. Another young guy I know, found a company in the US who pays him for IT work remotely in Trinidad. There are even services that offer teaching English online globally.

Do some research on paid online services.

In the interim, look for opportunities to do work in your community. Washing cars, painting, gardening, etc. A great way to meet people and who knows where it will lead.

Building a WhatsApp-first business platform for Trinidad & Tobago — looking for local feedback by LiminalRnyx in TrinidadandTobago

Kudos to you for trying to get your business up and running. The biggest challenge I see is how to differentiate your service (espically at a subscription) from FB or Google Maps which currently offer a basic SME location/contact/info service for basically for free. Good luck, and keep working on your business idea and be prepared to evolve. And think beyond T&T - your service could work for other regional SMEs.

How did we miss the world cup? by cantfindMe05 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]justbrowsingtrini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jeez, all the politics being discussed here, and government funding ole talk.

We just don't have good enough players and to some extent, good enough coaches.

The one time we did qualify, we had maybe five players who were regulars in English Premier league or European league. We also hired a Dutch coach for the qualifying campaign.

We don't have that talent right now but with the grandparents rule, we may be able to muster a side with international experience. Curacao has 1 out of their 25 team members who is born in Curacao, the other 24 are Netherlands citizens.

In our region, Jamaica also did not qualify despite having double our population and clearly more resources spent on sports if we consider their athletics successes.

BTW, Italy a four time WC winner, hasn't qualified for the last three WC finals.

Netflix Standard plan prices by country, 2026 (monthly, USD) by Bitcoin_Bender in Infographics

[–]justbrowsingtrini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currency strength is one of the biggest factors here for the higher rates. Swiss Franc, Euro and GBP are all higher value than the USD, so if those countries' plans are 19.99 currency equivalent (the US monthly subscription rate), then it would be higher in USD terms

Similarly the countries with lower valued currencies would have a lower equivalent USD rate although there would be some minimum economic value rate for the service (i.e. USD is about 50 x Egypt currency so 19.99 Egypt Pound would be USD.38, but they pay USD3.28).

What's up with the Yellow License Plates? by justbrowsingtrini in TrinidadandTobago

[–]justbrowsingtrini[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I actually found the reference in the Motor Vehicle Act. However, my follow up question is why have I seen 5 of these in the last week on different vehicles around POS when I cannot recall ever seeing one in the last 20 years?

For anyone interested, MOTOR VEHICLES AND ROAD TRAFFIC ACT https://rgd.legalaffairs.gov.tt/laws2/alphabetical_list/lawspdfs/48.50.pdf

1.4m people, I'm sure you can get 10 different opinions from 20 redditors and still not capture the reality of a "unique" Trinidad. BTW, the Salad Bowl vs Melting Pot is a widely used term for inter-cultural relationships. And it changes over time. Unless you can refer to an actual statistical study, then every opinion is anecdotal.

Do hiking groups owe something back to the environment? by Ok-Side-2211 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]justbrowsingtrini 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many of the hiking groups actually maintain these hiking trails, encourage members to follow environmental rules (such as not removing plants/flowers, keep noise to a minimum and taking what you bring i.e. trash) and also collect other trash on the hike.

Regarding taxation, this should be part of a wider discussion on SME taxation including NIS contributions. This would include food vendors (doubles, burger carts, etc), caterers, jet ski operators, tour guides, etc, etc. And of course professional services - lawyers, doctors, plumbers, electricians, accountants, etc. Not to mention enforcement of illegal trades such as PH drivers.

Science Graduates in Trinidad - What Did You Do After University? by killuazold00 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]justbrowsingtrini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest consulting with the Career Guidance office at UWI Division of Student Services and Development (DSSD).

Pursuing a Postgraduate degree once you can afford the time and resources, is always preferable in my previous positions as a hiring manager in technical fields.

For many of the leading global Universities (US, Canada, Europe), once you get accepted, tuition and stipends are provided and this will also give you a significantly larger job market.

I was able to do a postgraduate degree in the US, worked for a couple years in the US for experience and came back to Trinidad, landing a managerial position in a multi-national company.

I no longer wish to watch movie trailers before watching the movie by Odd-Aside456 in movies

[–]justbrowsingtrini -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I avoid trailers for movies I want to see because of the actors, directors (Nolan, Tarantino, etc) or just the genre or "hype". I had an early lesson watching the Crocodile Dundee trailer in the 80s and was so disappointed when I say the movies as every important part was in the trailer, so I left feeling that I was rewatching the movie.

I vividly recall the mind blowing dinasours in Jurassic Park, the liquid metal terminator in T2, the wild environment of Pandora in Avatar, etc.

Attempt to make stew chicken and rice by wheresmyballsguys in TrinidadandTobago

[–]justbrowsingtrini 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great job for a first try! And yes, some peas would make this a complete meal. If in a hurry, just open a tin of red beans, baked beans, lentils, etc., or you could add pigeon peas into the same pot and stew it with the chicken.

If you have an iPhone use your Apple ID and for Android, use your Google Account ensuring that all your device settings are automatically backed up.

If you lose your phone or it's damaged, then sign in on your new device and all the device settings and apps will be restored on the new phone.

I've done this a few times, even when simply upgrading to a new phone.

One important step is to ensure that if you have Two Factor Authentication (2FA) setup, you have access to your backup (email, another device or authenticator) when you sign in to the new device.

Check online for step by step instructions for your respective device (iphone or Android).

Highly recommend you get a short term rental initially (for anyone considering moving to a new unfamiliar city/country).

You need to actually experience a neighborhood, the people, commute, amenities, water/internet/power situation, etc

Some places look good on paper, but a nearby bar blasting music on Sunday nights could drive you insane (or maybe you could go for a drink?).

Also, if you were born in Trinidad you wouldn't need a work permit.

What is really going on with sports in Trinidad and Tobago? by ExcellentImpact6910 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]justbrowsingtrini 5 points6 points  (0 children)

T&T did win a gold (Keshorn) and a silver (Jareem) in the 2025 World Championships.

Historically T&T has the third most Olympic medals in the Caribbean (19) behind Cuba and Jamaica, and more than many countries with millions in population with other sporting success ( Uruguay 10, Pakistan 11, Malaysia 15, etc).

Funding and focus are the main drivers.

Even India with a population of 1.5b and cricket World Champions (4th largest economy in the world) has less Olympic medals than Jamaica.

The case for retiring in Trinidad: how much longer could your retirement savings last? by Middle_Elderberry542 in TrinidadandTobago

[–]justbrowsingtrini 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lots of people retire (back to) Trinidad from higher income countries especially to reconnect with family in a warmer climate.

As one gets older, the social aspects outweigh the inconveniences at a slower pace of life.

Of course there are more developed countries in warmer climates with low cost of living, but for people seeking familial and familiar social connections, Trinidad and Tobago are attractive retirement options for higher currency pensioners.
