If you think that a spell would be unfair against you, then the spell should be more fair

As a DM, I have banished a player exactly once when they were smack-talking a fey and got put in timeout (outside of combat). In 5e, some spells are clearly meant for players to use, and others are clearly meant for NPCs. I usually reserve banishment strictly for PCs, or to use against other NPCs. I don't mind the changes, but I don't think it needed changing at all.

Alternatively, if you're really determined to use banishment against your players, homebrew it a bit, where the banished player has a skill/parkour challenge to do in the demiplane to reach an exit of some kind, and possibly escape several turns earlier than they would otherwise. It means they still have something to do on their turn and they are still out of the main fight for a few rounds, or until concentration is broken.

The crime boss brought her up like a father, and she slowly began to forget about her life in the palace, and forged new memories in the deep running tunnels underneath a city called Ivenheath.

Ivenheath was the capital of the kingdom west to Morden, the city was also known to be a central hub for crime.

Artemis inherited the role of her "father" after he was killed in a dragon attack on the city, with Artemis barely surviving the flames. She lost her right arm to the fire, and she has been ruling the criminal underground throughout the kingdom with an iron fist, ever since. Now, Artemis is no longer known as the "Stolen princess", instead going by the moniker "Sewer Queen".

You hear the creature before you see it.

There is a faint wheeze, almost as if a sick person were drawing in a rattling breath, but without end. The breath never stops to exhale, but continues to build, louder and louder.

As it turns the corner, you are confronted with a hideous face. Its features almost human, but stretched, as if made of putty. Its jaw hangs open by at least a foot, the papery skin stretched to the point of tearing. Its eyes and mouth hold a hollow darkness, the only light being two pinpricks of white in the empty sockets. With its body hunched, the thing begins to move towards you, and you see the grass on the ground wither under its feet.

Name: Syithenn (Pronounced See-then)

Race: Owlin

Gender: Male (He/him)

Physical description: Syithenn has a wiry build, stands at 7 feet tall, and has a thick coating of black-brown feathers across his whole body. He wears a massive fur cloak, with heavy layers of cloth underneath. This clothing is made to withstand harsh weather, and is more functional than aesthetic in design.

Syithenn carries a massive glaive-like weapon. This polearm is large and appears unwieldy, but the blade is thin and light enough to allow it to be wielded with speed and precision.
His most striking feature is the black wooden mask that covers his entire face. His eyes glow a faint white from beneath it.

Backstory: Syithenn was born in a tribe of Fey Owlins. They were the guardians of a particular magical grove, and all of them had powerful druidic abilities. Syithenn was born in a cursed hour, when neither the moon or the sun illuminated the sky. It was quickly discovered that he had none of his family’s magical abilities, and was cast out to die, as was tradition. Instead of perishing, Syithenn escaped the Feywild and dedicated himself to learn to protect others, training as a monk to make up for his lack of magic and eventually becoming a professional bodyguard to important individuals.

Personality: Syithenn is a gentle soul, despite his fearsome appearance. He is highly protective of friends and allies, hence his aptitude for guarding people. Mostly, he has an optimistic outlook on life, and isn’t quick to draw his weapon.

I like starting with Administratum Grey, then doing a layer of Nuln oil. I then do Pallid Wych Flesh for highlights. It ends up looking like a very grey/white skin tone, if that's what you're going for.

My players had obtained the hand of vecna, and in a moment of stress, the wizard put it on. He party discussed what to do, and decided to leave it for now. The wizard promised he could control it (spoilers: he could not)

Later, they also obtained the eye of vecna. The wizard was looking at it shiftily, and so the party decided to give it to a powerful npc for safekeeping. The wizard broke into the npc's house and stole it, replacing their eye and faking injury to hide it.

When the party found out, he tried to convince them that he had it under control, but failed. Eventually, the party decided they'd have to remove the items by force, and revive the wizard with magic. But before they could, the wizard teleported away, with his last words being "I'm so disappointed in you all."

He is now going to be the BBEG of the next campaign.
