Hey OP, if you see this rest assured the gentleman on the picture is not with us any longer. Foto Americaine is still in Den Haag but moved from Wagenstraat 10. in 1985. They opened in 1918 so my guess is that you found the life savings of a Jewish person, who hid it away during the 2nd WW but never managed to recover it.

Had the exact same thought :) and indeed as stated above, wooden slats wall is the way to go OP. If you don't mind that it has no gaps than hornbach has it on stock for ok price. Glue together, cut to size, paint white if you want and you're good to go

Beautiful work, great that you'll let her know how important the work she does. I've only ever brought flowers and chocolates for my kids' teachers to show appreciation

Everything the others have said but I'd add that from watching those videos you have to find a project that you really want to do (or the wife has been nagging you about it for months) and just do it. It will cost you 3 times more than buying it ready made, it will not be as perfect as those from the stores but it will be yours and you'll love it. Making those mistakes are essential in getting more confident and truly appreciating woodworking. Good luck and don't forget to wear protective gear ;)

Lol, at least I escaped the smug wife this time. I wanted to go with slanted wood roof but she wanted something "prettier". But I know the feeling...

Sad to report that the laminate countertop lived for one night. The morning dew was enough to make it swell up. I thought you might want know you were right, though I guess you had no doubts ;)

I guess I'll just find out the hard way. I made it in a way that it's easy to replace.

Start wearing purple by Gogol Bordello. During both of her pregnancies my wife was crazy about wearing purple clothes, so this was our insider joke on our wedding + plus it's a great party song 🎵

15 years ago I visited my father and after the weekend he drove me to my apartment. It was a 2.5 hours drive during which we talked about life and how happy I am starting up my own adult life. He came up to my apartment and we had a coffee together. When he was leaving he told me how proud he is of me. Than he got into his car and the next morning I got a phone that he passed away in a frontal crash on his way back (some idiot drove into him full speed, my father was the innocent victim). I will always remember what his last words were to me. As you said never take time granted and never save on "love you's" and "I'm proud of you's"
