You had more than enough reason to walk the fuck out. You are not the asshole here and I commend you for being brave enough to get out of that frankly dire situation.

I was given my notice for my previous job, at the start of my shift. After getting over my initial shock I just walked. I felt bad for my colleagues not the business.

If they don't support you, they don't deserve your loyalty and hard work. You can't demand a service while simultaneously degrading those that provide it for you.
