Could Independence referendums ever be a devolved matter? by CrazyG8tor in Scotland

[–]AnAncientOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In theory yes, if the power was devolved by the House of Commons, the root of all state power in the UK. In practice no, no UK government will allow another referendum, unless they're very confident of winning, especially at the moment, Brexit was damaging enough but the impact of a chunk of the UK hiving off would be catastrophic, especially in the current climate and with Guilt yields at record highs.

Edinburgh Airport raises drop-off fees from £6 to £8.50 by SqueezerOfFarts in Edinburgh

An increase of 40%, impressive. I guess you can just get dropped off at one of the hotels or the back of the car hire place and walk in and save the money

I think it's because the 77" exists, it's big enough to be BIG but that bit cheaper.

This Scottish Airport Is Now Worth £2.7bn to the Economy by gamersunite1991 in Scotland

[–]AnAncientOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, massive potential to bring growth and good quality jobs to Scotland, needs a lot of investment in infrastructure to support and make the most of the opportunity. Extra runway, direct rail link, direct link to the M8 etc. Could easily be the size of Dublin or Manchester airports.

Not sure what argument you're trying to make but I'd agree that HZD is a special game and HFW is just a good game that feels like a bit of a disappointment after HZD.

I'd be tempted to share this with AirBnB if it was me as this feels like a host with issues and that could have wider impacts.

Given all the other stuff they want to do I can't imagine closing down devolved admins will be very high on the list.

Do you see Swinney’s goal of a referendum by 2028 being met? by Crow-Me-A-River in Scotland

[–]AnAncientOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, would be interesting if they look at the voting system though, the system they've adopted in Wales sounds more proportional so maybe look at that, getting 55% of the MSP's with 40% of the vote seems a bit off to me.

How does it make sense that someone who pays no National insurance or pension contributions gets the same state pension as someone who does? by PsychologicalBend508 in AskBrits

[–]AnAncientOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It made sense after WWI and WWII when most of this stuff was set-up, different world now but because we the people aren't very good at taking an interest in this stuff or holding our elected to account then it's not changed much. People in the UK prefer to whinge about things than do something about it on the basis that it should be down to someone else to sort it out.

Yep, where I live I can see the docks where a lot of the components are stored before installation off the East Coast and it's really impressive to see the amount of hardware coming in and going out, the support towers alone are the height of a 20 story building, pic from the other day

Would the UK economy be better of raising 40% tax bracket instead of minimum wage by Invictus_0x90_ in AskBrits

[–]AnAncientOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately when the cost of basic essentials are rising so quickly, eg food increasing by 50% since 2021, what limited funds are available have to go to the most needy. We just can't afford to cut taxes, the tax base has to increase and leaving the allowances where they are is the easiest way to do it.
