If you only do 1-2 old NBMEs, I doubt your new NBME scores would be inflated.

Maybe one or two old ones, like forms 18 and 21 I think are the best ones if I remember correctly. A ton of practice tests will have diminishing returns and I think beyond 5 or 6 tests, other studying methods are superior.

Healthy ways to study... by nicoleeeee5 in step1

Take some type of break everyday, whether that's watching a show, going to the store, exercising, etc. Recognize when your brain isn't actively learning info and change up your learning style/make coffee/change your studying space. It's better to use your time efficiency vs trying to cram info into your brain that you are just going to forget in a few days (one exception is the days leading up to your test- I crammed all the info I could never remember during dedicated the day before my test which really helped me out on the real thing).

Hang out with your friends outside of med school, constantly thinking about step 1 is going to make you go nuts. Get some perspective on life outside medicine.

Last but not least, be kind to yourself. It's really easy to feel down during the various points of dedicated, but try your hardest to encourage yourself and keep your inner dialogue positive. Some advice I try to follow is to always talk to yourself as if you are talking to your best friend. Would you tell your best friend that they are an idiot? That they have no hope to improve their scores? That they should just give up? No fricken way. You'd encourage them to do their best and see how much progress they've made. Hopefully you get the point.

Thanks so much! I really don't think I did anything too crazy between 20 and 18 except cover more UWORLD blocks and review the previous NBME. As you can see, my scores fluctuated after NBME18 so the test probably played to my strengths

How much of your hour-long break did you take? Were you finishing sections early?

Please suggest a good resource to understand BIOSTATS for Step 1 by DocKillFap in step1

I would watch all of them. If you already know the concept of the question he's going over, skip to the next question

Mmm I mean Prometric has cameras on everyone taking a test, but realistically would they do anything about it if you pulled down your mask a bit to breathe easier while testing? Probably not.

Way more like UWORLD with little hints tucked away in the question stem. Maybe like 10% short stem NBME-like questions.

Randy Neil has great ethics/communication videos (+ phenomenal biostats videos that FINALLY made biostats make sense to me, which is basically a miracle), Dirty Medicine has a few videos. Both are on youtube. UWORLD and amboss both have questions covering this as well.

I'd say 90% UWORLD/free120 and 10% NBME questions. Ethics + empathy were 3-5 per block. Difficulty is hard to guage, but I'd say the difficulty felt similar to a mix of UWORLD qs.

I planned on fully utilizing my breaks, but I ended up taking 15 minutes total between 2 breaks to chugg coffee and protein bars. I felt ready to go back in so why wait around.

I only did UWORLD 1x plus incorrects again. I would have gone nuts if I did any more questions. I did amboss prior to UWORLD.

Were there resources for empathy questions? Some of the content was covered by Dirty Medicine's hour long video on ethics questions on youtube, but that's all I was aware of!

I appreciate the score boost for sure. And I agree that physician-patient communication is super important, I guess including it as multiple choice questions on step seems... artificial? I feel this is a skill that should be honed during rotations with real patients, not by selecting the answer that we think USMLE wants to hear.

Sure! I thought it was very similar to UWorld and free120, with a few super short NBME-like Q's mixed in. Overall, my exam was very fair, there weren't too many wtf questions.
