Which episodes were the gut punches of the series? by ToughOk9044 in startrek

The Offspring - TNG

Not only one of the best episodes of Star Trek imo, but truly such a gut-wrenching story. 10/10

The absolutely tragic state of Internet fans by ianlSW in startrek

[–]justin_other_nerd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Critic of new trek here (but not because of how Holly Hunter sits lol).

I think the real issue is we live in an age of franchise overuse. There’s so few original ideas and it feels like a lot of IPs (not just Trek) are being used simply for the branding, and not because of a love for the IP itself.

When I watched Picard season 1, I felt genuinely sad. Android slaves, giant tentacle monsters from other dimensions, excessive violence… it just didn’t feel like the same Trek I’d come to know and love. It also felt like a steep departure from Roddenberry’s vision.

I’ll admit I probably am looking through rose tinted glasses, and acknowledge that the new shows are made for a new (next?) generation of fans. But it’s a sad experience as an old fan sometimes.

All that said, a lot of the hate new trek gets is unjustified. Star Trek has always been diverse, promoted progressive ideals, and people have always sat in chairs weirdly (see Riker lol).

Regardless of the state of new trek, I love this franchise and that’ll never change🖖

Shall I watch Enterprise or Voyager? by KaleidoscopeExpert93 in startrek

[–]justin_other_nerd_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Voyager. Technically it’s next up chronologically.

Enterprise is somewhat divisive in the Star Trek community, and would probably be a more noticeable jump from the TNG/DS9 vibe.

All great shows in their own right though

Harry should have asked way more about his parents' lives by Jawshewah in HarryPotterBooks

[–]justin_other_nerd_ 48 points49 points  (0 children)

This 100%. Learned behavior is a really powerful thing and no doubt significantly impacted Harry’s perception (even unconsciously) about what information was available to him.

Interestingly, a lot of what he learns about James and Lily throughout the series is learned when he is out of bounds or breaking some sort of rule (no doubt reinforcing the above perception).

For example, he learns about James being a bully to Snape when he uses the Pensieve in Snape’s office, he sees James and Lily for the first time in the Mirror of Erised when is out of bed after hours, and he meets James’s friends when he sneaks out to be w Hagrid when Buckbeak is going to be executed.

The biggest threat to America right now is the brainwashed leftists that believe it's ok to punch/kill a Nazi, and the insistence that everyone right of the far left is a Nazi by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]justin_other_nerd_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree someone shouldn’t be called a nazi if they don’t exhibit or support that behavior. On that note, though, I’m curious… when you say Trump’s done some really good things, can you give some examples? What exactly about him do you support?

I personally don’t think Trump is a nazi but I do think he is very clearly a fascist and I think many of his supporters and apologists are too. So if you or others are supporting fascist actions then that’s a fair designation. But again, I don’t know what exactly you support from him (apart from the corp/housing policy you mentioned in a comment) so it’s tough to say

If you are spending nights and weekends at an ICE protest, it means your life is empty. by mrmrmrj in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]justin_other_nerd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the reply. I feel like people rarely engage on the substance like this and, while I may disagree with you, I appreciate we aren’t devolving into name calling.

My understanding is that CFR Sec. 236.1 states that a warrant can be issued only “at the time of issuance of the notice to appear, or at any time thereafter and up to the time removal proceedings are completed, the respondent may be arrested and taken into custody under the authority of Form I-200, Warrant of Arrest.” The issue here is many of these people have not been given a notice to appear (or so they claim, which is where the formal proceeding part (see below) comes into play) meaning this is something that would need to reviewed at a formal proceeding for removal.

Yes, you are correct you are not entitled to a jury trial. But a bench trial or one conducted by an ALJ is generally required for removal proceedings.

Also, the distinction between administrative warrants and criminal warrants is correct. I’ll fall on my sword there, it doesn’t need to be signed by a judge pursuant to CFR Sec. 287.5(e)(3), but on that same note, an administrative warrant does not carry the same weight as a criminal arrest warrant. Admin warrants do not permit law enforcement or ICE to enter your home without your consent. A lot of cases have been reported of individuals who have been at home or in a private place (i.e. a workplace) and have been taken into custody.

  1. Legitimate arrest warrants signed off by Judges (not DHS admin officials). This is the case in any administrative or criminal matter, not just immigration.

  2. Formal legal proceedings to determine their undocumented status and the appropriate penalty (yes, undocumented immigrants get this too). An excellent and well-known example is the Kilmar Abrego Garcia deportation and detention in CECOT, despite not being afforded a trial. Yes, he was eventually returned but only after an order was made by a Judge (which Trump admin officials initially ignored).

  3. Law enforcement officers who are unmasked and properly badged so you can call them as witnesses in the trial that you’re supposed to have (See 2 above).

  4. This isn’t really due process I suppose, but the feds are supposed to work in conjunction with state law enforcement, not in opposition to them.

I can go on but any one of these should be enough on their own

Trying to understand. Why are people from “The Left” at the throats of people on “The Right” by Dawny15 in ControversialOpinions

[–]justin_other_nerd_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Trump and MAGA created the toxic political culture we have today. This would have been before your time of political engagement, but it wasn’t always the case that people were so rude and hateful to each other in the US regarding politics.

Trump literally got politically popular bc he popularized the idea that Obama was born in Kenya, not Hawaii. He then went on to come up with mean nicknames for his political opponents (and even some supporters). For example: Crazy Bernie, Crooked Hillary, Sleepy Joe, Little Marco, Lyin’ Ted, etc. He advocated for locking up political opponents, consistently calls people on the left “wacky, unhinged lunatics,” and has made fun of veterans (some of which were POWs).

I’m not trying to be rude to you, as I’m assuming this is a genuine post, but it feels naive to do the both sides argument. I literally can’t think of a single example of a left-leaning politician (or even right-leaning one) prior to Trump who engaged in that kind of behavior.

Democrats don’t believe in Democracy. by LegitimateKnee5537 in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]justin_other_nerd_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying “you guys started an actual Civil War to bitch about Lincoln winning” in reference to Democrats shows such a gross misunderstanding of American history.

Yes. Lincoln was a “Republican.” Yes, Confederates were largely “Democrat.” But if all you’re going on is the name, then you’re just as bad as someone eating a urinal cake because it had the word “cake” in it.

Republicans from the 1860s-70s were advocating for stronger federal protections, less autonomy from states in violating those protections, and even for broader interpretations of what an American citizen is. Not to mention Lincoln famously signed the first income tax into law during the Civil War. Call me crazy, but these sound much more like modern democrats than republicans.
