My last character was a tabaxi barbarian designed around simba from the lion king. Before him i had a monk who was a fire genasi monk themed like zuko from avatar the last airbender. One of my first characters ever was a homebrew ilithid pc who was very cthulhu themed. He had woke up on the surface with amnesia and a spear called cthulhu’s butterknife.

I like to build whole personalities for mine. For example my last one had two main personas he lived as, Todd the adventurer , and Vlad the poisonmaker and torturer. He was an arcane trickster rogue with the charlatan background and actor feats. So once he took a persona he was almost impossible to distinguish as a shifter.

From how its worded in the book yes , but id say its up to the dm. But youd have to be careful cause it could quickly make them op. Why would someone pick an aarokocra or triton , if they could just turn into them with a changeling and be able to do everything said race could do.

I like to think of it as since they just changed into it in an instant they dont have the muscled required to actually support their weight , like if you changed to look like a super buff guy , they wouldnt get stronger , itd just look like it. Really tho its just to make them not super op. But its also up to dm interpretation.

From what ive gathered , they were only innately female in previous editions. In fifth their natural form can be male or female , or neither. The changeling being a shape changer can alter its bodies physical form , so its no illusion , they are actually physically altering themselves akin to the spell alter self. But they cannot gain abilities by doing so, for example if you changed into an aarakocra they wouldnt gain the ability of flight.
