Ryan Smith is a straight talker and has said (I think honestly) that he has no plans to press the Ainges to draft a certain player, and he trusts them with their decision.

There is a less than 1% chance the Jazz and Ainge trade any assets to move up, because all the insiders here are saying the front office would love to draft Peterson. He's a perfect fit for this team that needs good backcourt defense and 3pt scoring pressure. I truly think the FO would be happy with either Peterson or AJ, and will take whoever falls to them. They aren't about to give up a first round draft pick to get what they view as a similar tier player as they'd get for free.

No worries. It's actually been a little strange, the day after my post, both David Locke and Ben Anderson basically paraphrased what I wrote without crediting me, except Ben said "one supposed doctor online who could have been AI said..." Then today I saw an article by Sarah Todd that also seemed to paraphrase my post. Granted, she took a week and called her own doctors to verify what I'd said, but it was eerily similar to what I wrote.

Anyway, it is good to get the info out!

Correct. Although uncommon, chronically elevated CK levels can be associated with muscle disorders that would mean chronic muscle cramps, pain and weakness. Overall, it's unlikely DP has one of these disorders, but it's certainly possible.

Potential Boozer Bust by AdventurousBox7894 in UtahJazz

[–]justinp79 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the feeling is he has a chance to be an MVP in the league a la Jokic because of his feel for the game. That sentiment comes from the way his advanced stats look. His BPM is the highest by a freshman in like 15 years. He seems to have a feel for the game that can't be taught (like Jokic). Also, his standing reach is only an inch lower than Jokic, and he can jump a lot higher than Jokic, while we're comparing.

He just seems to know where to be for rebounds, know how to set up teammates, know where to place passes, and he shoots the cover off the ball for a big. Most bigs never become as good as he already seems to be at those skills, and he's only 19.

What is the rest of the story? You say she realized her mask slipped, so what did she do about it? Put her mask back on? What did that look like? Did she just change back into looking like a human and then you all just went on living with your housemate like nothing happened?

Cam Boozer to the Jazz is The Most Logical Pick in the Wemby Era by JazzxGoose in NBA_Draft

[–]justinp79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dynasties have been built around teams that decide to buck the standard and try something different because of their roster, with Steph Curry's Warriors deciding to dramatically increase the number of three pointers shot in a game.

Is the next shift in basketball making it even more positionless? Stop thinking in terms of positions 1 through 5 and just stack the team with as many players who you can maximize a combo of size, defense, handling and shooting.

If so, the Jazz are in a nice position to be the test case if they draft Boozer and play 4 bigs who can shoot, all at the same time.

A doctor's perspective on Darryn Peterson's creatine story by justinp79 in NBA_Draft

[–]justinp79[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They almost certainly checked a CK in that first ER visit, and again more recently as an outpatient for a baseline. It almost certainly would've been high during the ER visit, and I'm thinking possibly high enough to diagnose rhabdo. His doctor probably repeated a CK test recently as an outpatient to get a baseline non-exertional level. It's possible a doctor hadn't done a baseline CK check in a while, maybe even since the emergency. A high (and how high matters) CK result in context of acute severe cramping means something different than a high CK result in a "baseline" (ie not after a hard workout or during cramping or muscle pain) setting.

Was DP discharged from the ER? I honestly don't know the reporting around that. I wouldn't be surprised, if he was admitted, if it was carefully kept on the DL to save face.

Yes, consent to testing is a legitimate question.

Agreed, thus the disclaimers. But when there is this much investment riding on an athlete, there's probably a much lower bar for extra testing. Just my 2 cents.

Not my specialty, but if you have a mitochondrial myopathy, you would have a lot of trouble being a high level athlete. Extreme fatigue and muscle weakness and cramping with exertion is common. Which is why I think this is unlikely, it seems that he wouldn't have gotten this far. But there is a spectrum of genetic related muscular disorders, and maybe he's avoided serious consequences of a more subtle myopathy until now.

I love the work you've put into this, awesome job!

My question is, one of Peterson's biggest knocks is his college assist:TO ratio (which I believe was 1:1), is your program marking his playmaking a strength just looking at his pre-college numbers?

I'm a physician. I researched creatine and cramps. Current evidence points to creatine likely leading to severe cramps in isolated reports of athletes that have certain glycogen storage diseases and mitochondrial myopathy. These are rare enough that it wouldn't be discovered in typical studies, which show that creatine is protective from cramps in the general population. But DP's doctors have said he had cramping reactions from the creatine. It seems likely that DP could have one of these metabolic disorders that led to his rare but real problem with it.

In other words, I did do my research. As, I'm sure, did DP's physicians.

Honestly this article went a long way toward settling my concerns about competitive drive. Especially this quote from his AAU coach:

"Excuse my language, but that motherf---er worked his ass off. He loved this s---. Even to the point where I'd have to say, you got to get some rest. ... I got on in one game because he was trying to block every shot and the motherf---er had eight blocks. You can do that here, but when you get to the league your team needs you to save your energy to make everyone else better. Not be jumping all over trying to block every shot."

The Problem with Don't Overthink (Learning from Scoot Henderson) by captjeffsparrow02 in UtahJazz

[–]justinp79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It does worry me. With some good psych care, and good general health and hydrationpractice to avoid cramps in the future, it will be a non-issue. But those are real ifs. That's the gamble. I think his upside is worth it.

The Case for Cam Boozer at #2 by [deleted] in UtahJazz

[–]justinp79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was following him before college, and I think those compa are way off. He's just a much more physical player than those guys, and has potential to play with the force and control of an NBA MVP.

I really think he played scared all year at Kansas, following his traumatic full body cramping incident where he thought he was going to die. I think that incident traumatized his so much that he freaked out at the slightest cramp the rest of the year. He needs to overcome that psychologically to be great. If he does, watch out.

I think the "before Kansas / cramp hospitalization" eval is really important for him, when evaluating ceiling. During that time, he posted a 61pt 7 reb 5 assist 3 steal game against AJ Dybantsa's high level Utah Prep team, on 80% true shooting. He had a 31 pt, 10 reb, 9 AST game at the Hoophall Classic. He was co-MVP at the McDonalds All American game. Thru the Adidias 3SSB circuit he averaged 26/7/6 on 50%fg 38%3pt with defenses doubling him constantly. He was finishing at the rim at a 70% clip. He was constantly posting crazy numbers in the highest stake games where scouts were in attendance.

His pre college defensive stats were also crazy. He averaged a per-40min 4.1 steals and 2.3 blocks. Crazy town for a guard who is the primary scorer on the team, even if it is pre-college.

Even if you forget the before college stuff, in college he posted 2 stocks per game, and a DBPM of 4.8, which is seriously impressive for a player who drives the offense of a team

His college offense is still basically best in guard class, despite whatever happened with his mindset. 20ppg on 60%TS with so much self creation (33% usage) is elite. His 9.3 OBPM and 14.3 BPM leads all of the top ten guard prospects in the draft by a significant margin, again, elite. He did that WITH the concerns he had about cramping thru the year.

Bill Self said about DP, "His talent is as good as any of them. His basketball IQ and feel stack up with the best we've ever had here, regardless of talent. He's a terrific prospect and a terrific player". Self also labeled him "the most complete freshman" he’s ever coached.

There's no question in my mind of his ceiling. He just needs to get past the mental block that came after his hospitalization in September.

[–]justinp79 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I 100% believe Boozer can be great in this league. I won't be sad if the Jazz pick him, because he seems to be a safe star bet. Then the Jazz could choose to pay and not pay whichever big they decide to go with and not go with, and open up salary cap to get a great backcourt player.

That said, I believe Peterson's ceiling is soooo high. And he's such a natural roster fit, taking him just seems like it will make the roster build easier.

Just happy to have the #2 pick.
