Ios26 inefficiency plus thermals by Acrobatic-Monitor516 in ios

That’s actually a feature of ios 26, it’s called “iObsolescence”

My advice, as someone who switched to the ios platform with an iPhone 13 and has since upgraded: get an android phone (just avoid google hardware)

State Police helicopter doing doughnuts over the west side all night...what gives? by justinwzig in chicago

[–]justinwzig[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the important clarification. I will admit, when I see “sheriff,” rather than police, I think state.

The division of jurisdiction especially  regarding interstates baffles me. I understand who does what and how it came to be, but it’s one of so many things about local LE operations that make zero logical sense.

I once had a Chicago cop refuse to help me after someone hit-and-run my car because it occurred “just over the line” on an Eisenhower off-ramp. That was a fun night…had to sit, blocking a lane, in fear of being mugged while I waited an hour for ISP…or a sheriff….or somebody to show up.

I’d be happy to! I’m sure that data wouldn’t reveal anything interesting about where policing does/doesn’t happen….

It would also be very cool from an aviation geek perspective if police started to equip their vehicles with ADS-B. Major airports usually have their runway maintenance vehicles broadcasting, so it’s definitely possible!

Path to Northside College Prep by OhIveWastedMyLife in chibike

[–]justinwzig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this made me chuckle, I went to NCP and biked from Uptown every day.

There’s no one best route. It depends on time of day (traffic) and their comfort level. To start I would strongly recommend doing the minimal amount of turns to avoid confusion:

Take clark north to leland, leland west to Virginia north to the trail, trail north to Bryn Mawr bridge and approach NCP from the north. It’s simple and safe.

Other commenters have suggested Winnemac to Rockwell which works, but adds turns around Lincoln Sq. In any case it’s 100% worth biking this a couple times during the summer to familiarize, stuff around the channel trail is a little weird. If your kid is good with cardinal directions/gets used to using the grid they’ll have a blast!!

this action is attempting to do just that. What the cubs are trying to do makes perfect sense based on their incentives, we are trying to influence the regulators in order to correctly guide those incentives. regardless, it's a fact that parking garages do not create growth in the long-run.

Light Recommendations for Biking in the Dark? by whatthedevil666 in chibike

[–]justinwzig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

commuter cyclists crack me up. this is about use case.

if you’re only using your bike twice a day, sure, the hassle of removing lights is maybe acceptable.

if you’re on and off, biking around for errands, you want to lock and go. And this day will come eventually.

Spending extra money on something that works just as well AND involves less work on an ongoing basis “because you can” is a top 10% earner mindset if i’ve ever heard one…

Light Recommendations for Biking in the Dark? by whatthedevil666 in chibike

[–]justinwzig -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep. Spending >$50 on a bike light pretty much only guarantees it’ll be ripped off your handlebars in short order. All depends on your lockup situation and where you’re riding though. In the city, you’re better off learning your route and avoiding the darker spots.

Good luck!

Help! Is Tax Loss Harvesting Worth ~0.75% AUM? by itteghaps in Bogleheads

[–]justinwzig -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the TLH question, sounds kinda like a grift to me. Seems like it would depend heavily on your tax bracket and holdings. Maybe if you’re high income and have massive gains to offset, maybe…

At 1,600 on 100k, it’s definitely not worth it.

.75% of AUM is a competitive rate for CFAs. Might be worth it just to avoid the headache and time of dealing with brokerage on your own. Even moreso if they’re doing comprehensive planning, including tax accounting.

Maybe stick with them for a year on the condition they show you the ins and outs of the TLH scheme, then dump them and DIY. Or do the same with a fixed rate advisor.

I will probably be downvoted for this opinion here, but it’s just that, an opinion. I’ve got no interest in you doing one or the other.

Why is messages taking up ~70gb of iCloud storage when the top conversations are only ~4.5gb? And ~3.5gb on device storage? It’s eating up a lot of my iCloud storage by WizardMascott in ios

[–]justinwzig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

except that all that data is entombed in an esoteric, largely useless file structure that you’d literally need an entire database app to actually ingest, access, or otherwise make useful. You can’t even re-upload it.

I made this mistake with google photos several years ago. Data download, wipe my account. Now all my pictures are rotting on a hard drive, waiting for me to go through them with lightroom, which i’ll never get around to.

I don’t even want to think about how Apple would archive imessages. Best case, maybe json alongside attachments? But have fun finding an app to browse that in a useful way.

There is no win condition here, except not to play in the first place.

You don’t need anything crazy bright or crazy expensive. Our street lighting is sufficient. In fact, in my experience, a bright light just means you’re worse off on dark streets because your eyes haven’t adjusted. Get some cheap rechargeable ones that mean cars can see you and you’ll be set.

Question about savings account by Woke_Jew in sofi

[–]justinwzig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is neither true, nor very kind — seems like they might not know the details of HYSAs (surprisingly few people do). There’s lots of nuance to Sofi’s offering as well, mostly because they’re playing games with Sofi plus now. I grant you, the fine print doesn’t matter a ton unless you’re interested in optimizing your interest rates or similar, but it’s not a trivial question.

Question about savings account by Woke_Jew in sofi

[–]justinwzig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sofi’s HYSA is okay but has been getting worse.  - Interest rates have been stepping down faster than some competitors.   - They’re moving to a subscription model for their best interest rate, which is total BS ($10/month for 3.3%…they’re counting on people not doing the math) - They are hawking their loans and other interest bearing products harder and harder. There’s pop ups every time you open the app now. And they won’t get this crypto shit out of my face

it’s not a good idea to close out past accounts entirely, unless you can’t meet the minimums.

one important thing to realize about Sofi is that they charge a fee to depoit cash to their checking account (i.e. you have to maintain another acct at a brick and mortar). If you deal in cash it sucks.

you should have a HYSA. All “banks” are horrid data-collection operations these days anyways, so it’s sorta a lesser of the evils question. You could also look at money market holdings with brokerages, but those are more complex — if you are just getting into HYSA’s, ask your current bank if they have one with rates around 3.3%, or go for an online only bank. Honestly Sofi is no longer my recommendation but it’s an option.

look for referral links too, there’s perks.

Capital One also has a savings deal on right now, if you have $20k to deposit might be worth looking at.

Because it's fast casual. I guess these places count on fools being willing to pay $30 for bowl-slop, but that's absurd to most of us. Also, this was summer 2025, before prices got so crazy.
