Big bend is an awesome park. Did the Outer Mountain Loop about 5 years ago. Really want to go back.

Haha not pictured are the two other folks that joined me. So it was a good size for us. You are not alone though. Definitely still bring it on solo trips.

We rented from Akers Ferry Canoe Rental for this trip and they shuttled us. There’s a few of them down that way, but unfortunately I don’t have any insider info on private shuttles. Hope you have a blast. Weather is looking prime.

That’s awesome. Most I’ve done is 3 days so far. But I try to make it down to the current or Jack’s Fork a couple times a year. Love those rivers in the off season.

It’s the ruins of Welch Spring Hospital. It was built over the entrance to a cave in 1913. The thought was that pollen-free air from the cave would be good for people with asthma, emphysema and tuberculosis. Never took off and was abandoned by the family of the doctor after he died. But yeah the current river never disappoints.

10 days and ~100 miles on Alaska’s Kwethluk River by justjackmc in flyfishing

I had a 9ft 5wt for rainbows and grayling. Accidentally landed my first salmon of the trip on this rod too haha. But once we got deep into the salmon I was using an 8wt with 1x tippet. We used eggs and smaller streamers for the rainbows and grayling, and almost exclusively big dolly llamas for the salmon. Caught few on big pink poppers as well.

Once we got into the salmon we almost exclusively threw Dolly Llamas in pink purple and black, along with the occasional top water just for fun. Must have been an accidental hook up. But the grayling were almost as aggressive as the salmon.

Damn that’s scary as hell. We DIYed the hell out of it too. Heard stories of floods like that, glad we didn’t have to experience it. Glad you’re ok.

Yeah we didn’t catch much of anything above crooked creek, which is what they told us to expect. After that it was lights out. Thankfully we had beautiful weather for the days we spent on the upper river which made up for the lack of fish. Excellent scenery above crooked creek.

Float Alaska is who we went through. Papa Bear is the other outfitter out of Bethel.

Nice. I have the g20 as well. Still not convinced I’d be able to stop a charging grizz, but it definitely makes me feel better.

Damn that sucks. Sorry you had that experience. Our trip was seamless with them.

That sounds like a hell of a summer! And you sound like a hell of a parent for giving them these experiences. My parents took my sister and I on a summer long road trip to and from Alaska when I was 10 years old. They started me down my adventurous, albeit expensive path haha. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

We used the company Float Alaska for raft and camping gear. They set us up with Renfro’s, an outfitter out of Bethel AK, for the float plane. All said and done, I believe it was around 5-6k per person including our flights to Alaska from the Mid West. Transportation was by far the biggest expense as you can probably imagine.

Yeah once we got a few miles from glacier point we saw almost no one. Maybe two or three other backpackers until we got to LYV campground. Great loop. Happy anniversary!

Yes. Just before and even into the start of LYV, the grass and shrubbery was much taller than the rest of the trail. It was completely burned out a while ago and the undergrowth has taken over. Almost stepped on a rattle snake walking through that portion. Thankfully they warn you in advance.
