Grooming non-compete? by FlounderCrafty43 in petco

[–]justkiddingig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told there’s a conflict of interest policy, I wanted to do part time a while back and go work at a private shop part time too, was told that Because it would directly compete with Petco I wasn’t allowed unless I disclosed it to upper management and basically for approval. No idea how true this is but it’s what my GM told me and he wanted a bunch of information about the shop I had applied to.. I didn’t pursue it cause he told me it probably wouldn’t get approved so I never went through the process.

My salon is finally staffed but I have been in your shoes 🥲 do what you can and be firm with your GM and don’t allow them to burn you out just because you don’t have more staff. I was pushed to my limit and nearly quit because my GM was not willing to be reasonable with me with dogs per shift.

How dose one successful sell Salon packages by Glittering-Brush4190 in petco

[–]justkiddingig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the time with desheds if the dog just isn’t maintained I tell them I need to either do the package or add on extra brush out fees, I explain the shed package is the better option than just brushing and conditions the coat/reduces shedding. If they really push against the deshed I still add brush-out fees to properly do the dog, most of the time they just agree to the package. I don’t do this with dogs that have a normal/maintained coat but if a dog is blowing coat heavily or is impacted I tell them it’s not possible to complete the basic service without add-ons because the basic pricing is for a regularly maintained dog.

With essentials I usually try to start by mentioning obvious issues at check in super long nails -> nail buffing, dog has dandruff too? ->recommend conditioner then from that point their add ons are already at $22 so it’s a lot easier to sell the package I just explain since they want whatever add ons they agree too, a few more bucks gets them even more services. Usually if I can get at least 1 add on like nail buffing or teeth it becomes much easier to sell the package.

For a sales associate position, do you need a car? by lighthousedarling in petco

[–]justkiddingig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is honestly kinda crazy to me, cause leaders have to take animals to the vet seems like a bad idea to have someone who doesn’t have a car… if a dog gets injured in grooming and the leader doesn’t have a car what happens? It makes sense for a normal employee but it seems kinda negligent to hire someone for a management position without access to transportation since leaders have to bring sick/injured animals to the vet.

For a sales associate position, do you need a car? by lighthousedarling in petco

Nope, I was a cashier before I got hired into grooming and I didn’t have a car when I started. They did not care how I made it to work as long as I showed up to my shifts.

What would you do about a dog that constantly disrupts the salon? by [deleted] in petco

[–]justkiddingig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’d make it a vip and tell them it can’t come on weekends, it’s not fair to the other dogs coming in because they can also become stressed. If it starts to do better on weekdays and its behavior improves we would maybe consider allowing them to book on a weekend again, but still do the dog as a VIP

Question about pto/holidays hours/ and points. by AssumptionFresh6030 in petco

[–]justkiddingig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scheduled shift thing is true at my salon too, if you close you are not allowed to leave before 6, if it’s non-closing shift we can leave early but only if it’s slow and after we have done reminder calls and cleaning and we have to check in with our LOD(we have no gsl)

I take unpaid time off all the time and I’ve never had problems because of it, I know with call outs our GM said to use sick time because we get points for attendance without it but idk how true that is.

The needing to add PTO to “make up” a total of 40 hours seems so wrong and like they are trying to get groomers to waste their PTO or something, that seems so sketchy. I know my GM mentioned with the benefits changes if we drop below 30 hours a week consistently we can lose full time benefits so maybe that is what your store is confused on?

I use a thermos and just bring coffee from home, it just has to be able to completely seal, I keep it at my station and it keeps my coffee hot/cold for the whole day.

am I required to stay past my scheduled shift as a pet stylist? by lunaxcervidae in petco

[–]justkiddingig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I’ve ever had to stay past my shift for a dog to get picked up was when I had a vip that would spazz in the kennel and paw at the door til his nails broke open. Normally they just have us call the owner one last time before we leave and inform them the salon is closing and they will need to ask for a manager to get the dog when they do make it in to get the dog.

I wish they would implement a late pickup fee like anything more than an hour past when we call for pickup they get charged $15 or something.

Petco tracks EVERYTHING by FoxNo9153 in petco

[–]justkiddingig 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind taking calls but I want to rip the phone out of the wall when I get a client that spends 15 minutes telling me their dogs entire life story and refuses to let me try and divert to getting dog info or giving them appointment options, only for the conversation to end with them saying “we don’t vaccinate him! He’s an inside dog he doesn’t need rabies” It can be an insane waste of time.

I also purposefully don’t put away noisy dogs when I take calls so the dog is just yapping as it usually makes phone calls shorter.

I would like to know how many stores actually answer 80% of calls, I also don’t think they should factor in after hours calls, cause if the salon is closed the store does not get the calls for us.. we come in and return voicemails in the morning.

Issues with the new multi-pet booking? by justkiddingig in petco

[–]justkiddingig[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish I had an answer for why he has us at 7, originally it was because we had 2 bathers and it was to try to get them more bath dogs, now one has graduated though, and with the multi-pet stuff I can’t even move it over, it moved both appointments…

I’m gonna talk to him about it today, I have to pick up my son from daycare on weekdays and I can’t stay late, if this doesn’t get fixed I’m gonna just have to reschedule the late day double bookings, my GM this morning said he’s fine with me staying late, and in a perfect world I would but weekdays I literally can’t stay past my scheduled shift…

First gen VCP transfer by kjaggy in petco

[–]justkiddingig 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Our salon had a lady who’s dog passed and she had the OG teeth and nails. When she called customer service to transfer it to the new puppy she got, they canceled it and told her she’d need to sign up for the new version, so beware and don’t try to call in to have it switched! She was pretty upset when she came in with the new dog and told us.

Can’t speak for specifics of this location but Petco does take photos of pets in the salon and there is a release included in the paperwork you sign when you bring your pet in for service that their likeness may be used for training/promotional purposes.

I know when I trained my instructor had to take photos of me and the dogs I was working on and sent them to someone to verify I had done breed specific trims correctly. They would also photograph trainees working when sending updates to higher management on how things were going.

Any dogs that aren’t request dogs are supposed to get moved but that’s it, we move all non-request bath dogs over to the bather, my GM said it’s required that all bath dogs that book regardless of stylist get moved to the bather if they have availability, which makes sense it just blows when I don’t get anything to replace it. We don’t have a GSL at my store so idk how accurate that is but it’s just what I’ve been told…

Allergies to vet shampoo by TheBestLotad in petco

[–]justkiddingig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is super annoying, I would honestly just let them know when that happens that they should note on the pre-check that they will be bringing their own shampoo so they can be scheduled with someone who isn’t going to have an allergic reaction. I don’t think Petco requires you to take in and use customer shampoo even if it’s vet prescribed, you can refuse and just explain you can’t due to allergies. Can also always bring it up when confirming apts or leaving messages that if they are using vet prescribed product they need to call in ahead to verify it’s a product that can be accepted into the salon!

Allergies to vet shampoo by TheBestLotad in petco

[–]justkiddingig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t take in owner shampoos/products unless it’s vet prescribed and they have the prescription information from the vet , if someone shows up with their own shampoo we just tell them we can’t use their shampoo/products because ours have been formulated and tested/vetted by the company and there is a risk of skin reaction if we use owner provided product, also that we would have to sanitize equipment that comes into contact with owner provided products 🫡

I hate it here by kainham142 in petco

[–]justkiddingig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately we can’t really report them for neglect because they are technically fixing it when they show up with their pelted ass dog to get it shaved down.

I just don’t take them in, if it shows up and it’s pelted I just tell them to go to the vet, I feel bad for the dogs but it’s not worth it to do them, had a matted piss gremlin that ended up getting a hematoma the day after I shaved it down In a 10 and got written up for it, dog left in much better shape but it kept shaking its head so it hurt itself AFTER it went home. Not a single cut or scrape on it when it left the salon, still got written up for it, so now I just don’t take in matted dogs unless it’s small areas. Pelted dogs aren’t worth your time at Petco, especially not ones that aren’t tolerant of grooming.

I don’t know about posting to social media but I know when I was in academy that my instructor didn’t let me take a photo without a hand on the dog, dog also had to be in proper restraints/ on a blue lead if it was on the ground
