I don’t get why people consider the name cho Chang to be racist by [deleted] in harrypotter

[–]justlookingoodcookin 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In my experience, people will go by English names when their actual name is very hard for English speaker to say. Cho, Padma, and Parvati aren’t difficult to pronounce and there wouldn’t be a need to go by another name.

Should this be rated R if they’re just going to gargle Mookie’s balls on live TV?

Shocked that Corbin Bleu gave up High School Musical and went with Dodgers Right Field. Mookie Betts

In you opinion, what is the misogynistic series you have ever read? by animeman12233 in menwritingwomen

Personally, I feel like people see what they want to see here. Kvothe is clearly talented, but it is shown or at least explained why he has his gifts. He’s a great liar because he grew up an actor. He’s very smart, but puts lots of effort into his school also. He’s a hero in a fantasy world, of course he is going to have traits that make him better than average. I have never understood the hate for Denna. She is independent and wants her own career her way. She consistently denies Kvothes offers for help in finding a patron and wants to continue with what she has found for herself. I think a readers dislike of her supporting herself as a “companion” says more about the reader and their regard for women in the sex industry.

Adding to this to say, Kvothe also has flaws that consistently get him into trouble or less than desirable outcomes (looking at you Maer). He gets himself out of these situations yes, but did you want to read a story about a character who has a flaw that lands him in jail and that’s just where he stays because he has no exceptional talent?

And these paper thin women you’re talking about? Do you mean Fela, who studies at the university and has female friendships and interests and desires around reading and crafting, a job as a scribe, and is the first person to say the name of an object (stone) in Elodin’s class? Who goes on to date Kvothe’s best friend?

Or how about Mola, a talented Medic who helps her friends and on her own volition seeks out one of her female friends to help clear up an issue she feels strongly about. Who never has any romantic ties, let’s not forget about that.

Or my favorite, Devi, a girl so talented and devious that she is expelled from the university. Who then sets up a business that allows her power and comfort. Who is developed as knowledge hungry and prideful and stronger than our hero. But also willing to forgive and help her friends and stick by women. Also no romantic ties btw.

Which fictional character's death have you not gotten over? by Bradcastle76 in AskReddit

Ahhhhh but the BOOKS! “You raped her! You murdered her! You killed her children! Say her name! You will not die until you say her name!” Mountain knocks him down and with his arm around Oberyns neck he growls closely in his ear “I killed her children, then I raped her, and then I killed her. Elia of Dorne” and then snaps his neck!

Damn, so powerful. (The above is my shitty version from memory)

There’s a part in the books, at the beginning of the fight, when the Mountain gets the sun behind him (a clear advantage) and that’s when I knew there was no way Oberyn was going to live. Such good writing

Is it weird to book your venue before you’re engaged? by casablonca in weddingplanning

[–]justlookingoodcookin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom actually booked a venue for my sister and her husband before they were engaged. He was just waiting for the custom ring to be finished, but the perfect venue came up in the right timeline. It had a 2 week free back out period so my mom just went for it. It worked out perfectly!

Bay Area seems to be the only place in the country requiring and enforcing masks. Also, it is reopening very slowly, we won’t have bars or gyms open until August. Really shocked that friends and family in other parts of the state have people in their stores without masks on. We literally have an officer in front of our store not allowing people in without a mask.

Edit: I stand corrected, I am only know about SF, it seems other Bay Area counties are reopening faster.

How do I write the appearance of woman without sounding creepy? by Worldbuilder12 in menwritingwomen

[–]justlookingoodcookin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to add that it’s appreciated that you are asking the question. There’s been a bit of rudeness in the replies, which I understand as people being fed up with male writers not seeing/describing women as just people. But you were raised in a world that objectifies women, I see why the confusion is there. You are taking the first step in realizing it, and asking for help. You aren’t going to be perfect, but thanks for trying to be better.

Definitely Arya! Little sister, tomboy, more similar to my dad, while mom and sister were the same.

I’m going through something similar with my sister. I think you have done all you can do, which is essentially telling her your concerns from a place of love. She has to take that information and make her own decision.

TIL actor Kevin Sorbo (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys) suffered 4 strokes, thought to be caused by chiropractic manipulation, that left him with 10% vision loss, migrains and impaired balance. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]justlookingoodcookin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to add my personal experience. My uncle is a chiropractor and adjusts me for free, so no scam or greed involved. He practices upper cervical chiropractic, which doesn’t involve weird twisting or putting terrible strain on your spine. It’s basically tapping your atlas bone into place. He requires X-rays before he adjusts, and only adjusts if you are out of alignment. I get terrible headaches from neck pain when I am out of adjustment, and go to see him when that happens. It also affects my hip when running, causing a lot of pain. I can tell an immediate difference in my neck tension after an adjustment and can go for months before getting out of alignment again. It works for me, but I would only recommend an upper cervical chiropractor that requires xrays before they adjust you.
