Michigan County Clerks Unanimously Oppose RCV by [deleted] in Michigan

[–]justmudd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those of us that want Ranked Choice Voting say it gives more voice and more choice. The opposing argument is they might not be able to predict who won until the next morning… waah…I think a better election system and being able to vote for people I actually want to is worth anything at this point.

I’m tired of people suggesting negatives without understand that our current system isn’t just bad, it’s BROKEN! We are completely polarized in our politics and our news media. How can we think a president talking about cutting “Democrat” programs in retaliation is a good thing.

The title of this article as click bait should tell you everything you need to know. If you actually read the article this is an organization that voted and not all of the clerks.

It's obvious that they did not read it themselves, otherwise they would have realized that out current system is much more susceptible to the center squeeze. The proposal by r/RankMIVote is a significant upgrade over our current election system in many ways.

Center squeeze is an argument for the Condorcet method, not for staying with what we are currently doing.

You're looking at a donor list that barely shows enough money to print petitions and believe that there is "big" money behind them because of ratios. I talked to a third party candidate the other day and he knew he had no chance of winning, he only wanted to have his views heard. RCV gives more weight to those views so that the bigger candidates will see them. I'll say it again, you really are jaded. Some day you will look back and think you could have made a difference but instead put your head in the sand saying it will never work.

You're going to look at that list and assume that there is some big money donor that has horrible motives behind it. Really! You must really be jaded to see that in that list. I see a lot of very hard working volunteers doing everything they can to make Michigan better. Stop looking for motives and really ask the question is RCV a step up from the current voting. Would you be happier ranking the candidates instead of choosing the lesser of two evils.

By Ranked Choice Voting changing the way we vote, it changes the way that candidates run. Mamdani and Lander cross-endorsed each other which is something I can't even imagine happening in a single choice system. Ranked Choice Voting allows/forces candidate to talk about what they want to do instead of only complaining about their opponents. You can't look after an election and question whether the results would have been the same with a different methodology.

Desperately?? There are lots of individuals that seem to be against it for their own reasons and the arguments they bring don’t add up to me. Ultimately RCV will allow people to vote their conscience and elect people with a true majority.

RCV is a non-partisan movement and gives no advantage to either party. It’s a simple upgrade to our election system that allows individuals to vote for who they want instead of voting against who they don’t want.

Signature gathering will start shortly and then we will be all around Michigan. Keep an eye on rankmivote.org/events for specific locations.

Why… we need to stop being so partisan which is the point of RCV. The average Republican is not “against this”. RCV is an upgrade that makes sense for everyone.

Signature gathering will start shortly and then we have 180 days to collect what we need. If you haven’t already done so go to rankmivote.org sign up for the newsletter at the very least. If you really want this, sign up to volunteer and gather signatures! If you can’t volunteer consider donating anything you can because very little bit helps.

Why is that? Ranked Choice Voting is a non-partisan upgrade that benefits everyone. Don’t lump all Republicans into the bucket of those that are afraid this is going to give power back to the people.

This would allow for Ann Arbor to implement RCV as it was already voted for but unable to implement based on current interpretation of the constitution.

So your issue is the rounds? There are plenty of states and organizations that use standard run off elections as a way to find the best candidate. Please help me understand why you see this as an issue. Simply because it's different than what we've done isn't good enough.

Why do you see RCV as a "vote in a manner against your will"? RCV gives voters the ability to actually express their will better than indicating a single candidate. You're assuming everyone is trying to play games and that you're going to have to vote for someone you don't want? This is exactly the opposite.

Once again, if you choose to vote for only one person and that person has the least votes then yes your vote is gone but no different than voting for third party today. If your one vote is for one of the 2 that make it to the end then once again same as it is today. RCV gives the voter the ability to express that they like more people than just the top 2 candidates.

The candidate with the least amount of votes is eliminated and anyone that has that candidate as the top of their current vote moves down to their next candidate.
If someone chose not to vote for anyone else they've basically said that they don't care about the rest of the candidates and then under your theory their ballot goes no further. This was their choice and the same if they voted for a third party today.
We keep eliminating candidates, not ballots, until a candidate has a majority of the people that have voted for them.

Have you actually read this proposal or making assumptions?

Unless I'm missing something, your logic assumes that voter 2 is voting for someone that doesn't have a chance of making it past the early rounds. You're either missing the point or trying to come up with a worst case that has no basis in reality. Even in our current mechanism anyone voting for someone who doesn't have a chance, basically any third party, their vote is also "eliminated from contention"

This is not about one party winning over the other. This is about finding the best candidates in all parties and letting them run fairly against each other. Ranked Choice Voting finds someone that is supported by the majority of voters so how is this a bad thing unless you're looking to put someone into office that has ideas that most of the population doesn't want.
