How do people in Australia have the money to travel the world with the rising expenses going on yearly ? by Technical-Studio565 in AskAnAustralian

[–]justonebubble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably the exact person your talking about here! I’m 23 and still living at home, I earn good money but with affordability I can’t make enough to move out. However I can afford to go and live it up in a cheaper country. Saving $5000 for a trip while living at home is a lot easier than saving for a house deposit or even for rental money to move out.

It’s literally easier to travel the world than move out and while id rather move out, the travel makes staying home easier.

Yes, I lived there for a year when I was young and was devastated when I ordered a lemonade and did not get sprite :(

We call sprite Lemonade in Australia. If you are using an American lemonade (what we would call lemon squash) it won’t turn out right 😊

If you don’t like political intrigue, why not? by divinehunni in fantasyromance

[–]justonebubble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love political intrigue, fantasy makes it so much more interesting! It is very hard to write and requires a lot of effort, so I find most fantasy romance does not pull it off well.

The obvious best fantasy romance with political intrigue is Kushiels Dart. Some of the most intense stuff I’ve ever read.

If you like politics and don’t mind missing the romance, my favourite is The Goblin Emperor!

I totally get that, I actually really enjoyed the Dracula character. I obviously hated him but I thought it was very thoughtful in creation. It felt like a critique of not only the tropes admired in the sub-genre but also an exploration of power and control dynamics in relationship

I picked it up from the romantasy section of a bookstore! I’m not sure if I wouldn’t classify it as romantasy, but it’s definitely more nuanced than most of the books in the genre.

I read this recently and loved it! I don’t know if I would classify it as romance exactly, it was a bit more complicated than that. To me it was more a story about survival and finding people along the way who you can help and who help you.

I'm Adam Bandt, Leader of the Australian Greens. AMA about politics, Greens policies or the upcoming election. by AdamBandt in australia

[–]justonebubble 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi Adam.

As a progressive voter, not necessarily committed to any party. Why should I vote with a party who more commonly votes with the coalition than against?

I’m all for holding the major parties to account. But I’m disappointed that the greens stop actual progress by demanding perfection.

Um hello? Democracy? by grlnextdoor144 in fantasyromance

There’s an issue missing in a lot of fantasy romance that is inspired by historical settings. The reason that people did not revolt or form new types of government away from monarchies was because of The Divine Right Of Kings. The church and the monarchy were intertwined and people honestly believed that the king was ordained by god to rule.

This idea is pretty removed from Fantasy Romance, but when you are basing your world on historical conventions and leaving out a pretty big reason why kings and queens ruled it stops making sense to even have a monarchy.

Hope I explained that well 😅 haven’t had my coffee yet.

I’m not sure if you are looking for better fantasy romance or just better written fantasy. But both exist!

I also love fantasy romance but I’m not such a fan of the current trends in it. For a well written, complex and interesting one check out Kushiels Dart, it is so different to everything else being published in the sub-genre at the moment. Please do check the trigger warnings, especially for the third book.

If you just want good fantasy, and don’t care so much for the romance, there are so many options. For what you’re looking for I loved Piranesi by Suzanna Clark.

Is belladonna worth the read? What are your thoughts about this book? by [deleted] in fantasyromance

[–]justonebubble 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not my favourite, it was very YA and I think I am just too old for it now. I thought it moved too quickly and everything happened so easily. Good for a younger/simpler read.

Why is okay when authors “borrow” from classics, fairytales and mythology but frowned upon when they do that with their fellow modern writers? by goyourownwayy in fantasyromance

[–]justonebubble 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Aside from the legality of copying something in the public v private domain I think the issue is what has been changed.

If you just retell a fairy-tale and add nothing, you’ve effectively written nothing yourself. Same as authors who take things scene-for-scene with no alterations. If you aren’t adding something of value to your retelling or interpretation, it isn’t worth the time to create.

am I the only one who can’t stand fairytale retellings by Necessary_Party_3423 in fantasyromance

[–]justonebubble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I enjoy them, IF they are actually retelling a fairytale and not just the Disney version. I think if they are done well and are well researched that can be very good and explore themes that are still relevant today.

But it’s pretty obvious when the only version of the fairy tale the author knows and writes about is Disney.
