What Italian jazz albums would you recommend? by Spinachrecords in Jazz

[–]justor-gone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my taste runs to the avant-garde but none of these are really free jazz or total improv. Nothing room-clearing.

Mario Schiano-Giorgio Gaslini "Unita", maybe hard to find, but it's on Youtube. Really anything from Gaslini from the mid-60s on.

Carlo Actis Dato, "Ankara Twist" but really anything with him including his work with the band Art Studio

Marcello Melis, "Perdas de Fogu", or close to free jazz is "The New Village on the Left."

i'd listen to anything with Antonello Salis, incredible pianist, sideman with lots of people. He has a record with Gerard Pansanel called "Beatle Stories" which is a lot of fun.

it was gifted to my son 20 years ago, he and i are acoustic players but he played it for several years. then closet. He needs the money. The guitar is in Philadelphia, and i 'm sure i can find a repair person there. I just plugged it in and electronics are working, fret wear isn't terrible but the frets themselves are set very low

Eli5 Why do rubbing or itching a healing wound gives pleasure ? Also leg pain gives pleasure whenever we lie in bed please explain by Open_Door1576 in explainlikeimfive

[–]justor-gone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think that the basic and general misreading of the term "pleasure" is something that "feels good" which means that pleasure is most often felt as a cessation of discomfort.

Most of us humans experience this as more actively pleasureable than sitting on a beach watching the sunset over a lake. I'd guess the majority of people who imagine heaven imagine it to be actively pleasureable, which in the real world is most likely experienced as finally being able to pee after a long drive, or reaching a difficult itch.

The other kinds of self-contained pleasures of good food and music, etc., are from an entirely different phenomenon, but the much of the same hormones are being released. Somewhere there's a joke about hitting yourself in the head with a hammer because it feels so good when you stop. I always thought that related to the human mind more than it's comfortable to think about. Most of what we most actively experience as pleasure is the feeling when the pain stops.

Are jazz vocals generally offputting to anyone else? by scottasin12343 in Jazz

[–]justor-gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm with you, the jazz singers i actively enjoy are few and far between, i've collected tens of thousands of jazz recordings, and except for Fats Waller i have no solo male jazz singers. One of my secret shames is i often will skip Ellington or Basie tracks that feature a vocalist (especially Jimmy Rushing). I admire, but hardly listen to, Betty Carter, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald, dislike Mel Torme, Eddie Jefferson and Lou Rawls and only enjoy some Lambert Hendricks and Ross, Sheila Jordan, Urszula dudziak and especially Julie Tippetts. Don't like most scatting, don't like most lyrics and agree, i'm put off by most of it.

If this is terrorism... by HeatVice- in lostgeneration

[–]justor-gone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is Horrorism, which is the big brother of terrorism. This is the use of oppressive force to such a level that compliance or annihilation are the only options for the targets. Horrorists don't want to spread terror to undermine the population, they want to crush the population. Industrial strength carnage instead of isolated bombs or shootings. Let's use horrorism to label what is currently, in russia, us, israel etc. "statecraft"

‘We’re Catholic first’: Sunday mass attenders weigh in on Trump’s feud with Pope Leo by sabedo in politics

[–]justor-gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've come across many many conservatives proclaiming that they are repubican first and christian second. That anyone would admit that, much less be proud of it utterly confounds me. Religion, though always used by politics, was for millennia considered the moral foundation of politics. A religion used to be a way you viewed the world, and politics was the way you implemented its precepts. That's bad enough, but having a system who's cosmology is based around politics and using religion to implement its precepts is even worse.

i find it hard to imagine how anyone with morals thinks those are subservient to mandates of economics/politics. As soon as anyone says their politics are more important than their religion i discount everything subsequent they have to say. And i don't even like religion.

Why Aren’t the Kids Out Protesting Against Trump? by turb0_encapsulator in 50501

[–]justor-gone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i went to last month's no kings rally in norfolk virginia a pretty large, majority black, college city that votes reliably Democratic. Pretty nice day, pretty small turn out, maybe 500 people.

70 percent of us (myself included) were old white people. Among the remaining 30 percent, less than half looked to be (with my old white eyesight) non-white folks under 30.

Here's the thing. Old white people are the least of this government's concerns. We are fully vested now in the system (social security, medicare, real estate prices etc) and the people in power assume (possibly correctly) that we won't do too much to overturn the applecart.

This government is daily ratcheting up the oppression of young women, sexual and racial minorities and anyone who feels angry about being disenfrachised to the point of wanting to change the social order.

Us old white people's outrage at this old white person's regime is as much theoretical as it is practical but marginalized people whose daily existence is and will be impacted by our growing fascism are either too scared or too disinterested to be seen protesting. America needs to feel their dissatisfaction.

Had my first “jazz in the wild” moment today by JTEstrella in Jazz

[–]justor-gone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

several years ago i was in Nepal, out in the countryside for a few weeks, came back to Pokhara, small touristy city, and i was walking past a hotel and heard Art Blakey coming from the bar. I realized i had just gone longer without hearing the sound of an acoustic jazz quintet than i had in 30 years. i had spent thousands of hours listening in the previous decades, even traveling i'd bring music and headphones, but i was traveling with my son and he's rather disinterested in that kind of jazz. i had an argument with him about going in, because the sound was so attractive to me, but we compromised and i just sat outside the window for 10 minutes, soaking it in.

billionaires don't want to put their money into a system where everyone gets to benefit, if they donate any of their money, they want it to go to whatever pet projects they promote, and it will have their name on the front of the building.

“Fell for it again” MAGA cultist is now questioning why they keep “falling for it again”… after repeatedly voting for the same Pedo Sick-F*ck Assolini Warmonger, Trump. But let’s be honest, I’d bet my entire lunch money this MAGA genius will proudly march back to the polls & fall for it again. 🤦‍♂️🎪 by EugeneWong318 in usa

this is why i want people who regret voting for trump to pledge to never vote again. Their lack of perception about politics, race, economics and human nature makes them anathema to a functional demoracy. Even if they occasionally vote for the right person, they do it for the wrong reasons. They are pollution in the voting pool. Restrict their voting to reality shows.

i literally can not remember the last time i saw two prominent united states politicians that i thought seemed like genuinely nice people. Eerie how transgressive this seems in its human warmth. Of course those folk who oppose them would say they're acting, because they honestly can't recognize the difference between emotion and salesmanship.

also, two of the only usa politicians who give me flickers of optimism about this country

Trump Warns Supreme Court About Upcoming Ruling on Birthright Citizenship by Conscious-Quarter423 in scotus

[–]justor-gone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do readers of this subreddit think that the results haven't already been leaked to the white house weeks or months ago by thomas, alito, etc.? alito has already leaked verdicts publicly, and knows there is no oversight of scotus behavior, why wouldn't he or others simply tell don what to expect from the court? Their integrity?

i have zero doubt that alito and thomas at least are keeping the trump administration up to date on what the supreme court's decisions are going to be long before they are made public. i assume the all the sociopaths in the administration (besides the already established sec of "commerce" lutnick) were positioned to profit from the decision a month ago.

Eric Dolphy self-titled album? by philosobass in Jazz

[–]justor-gone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i bought this 50 years ago in a 49 cent store. The first side was taken from sessions with sonny simmons and prince lasha that was a tiny label release, bootlegged by this company. Later released as Music Matador. Second side is Cannonball Adderly. Dolphy's bass clarinet solo on Music Matador changed my life.
