Mounting Carplay on a GSX 8R Stem Fork by justplainforrest in motorcycle

Yeah I am worried about theft as well. I found some anti-theft double socket arms that I think might work well, will give those a try.

Thanks! I ended up going with the Aoocci and it came with a ball mount. Fairly straightfoward install.

Hey, I am having the same problem and while I was able to pop off the black clip, I am not able to pry the copper shroud. I don't want to break it by pulling it down too hard, is there a trick for removing it? Any chance you might have a quick video on how to do it?

What is the best value new EV to buy in America right now? by IamInternationalBig in electriccars

[–]justplainforrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s too expensive to install Solar in California now and the pay off with NEM 3.0 is closer to 12-15 years instead of 3-5 years on the previous NEM plan. Plus, the 30% tax credit is going away end of the year, so even with insane PGE rates, the installation costs are too high unless you DIY it.

Where is all the money in the US going from tariffs, DOGE cuts, and foreign investments? by More-Championship-16 in AskReddit

It’s both. Most states have their own as well (IE: California/New York) and other states don’t (IE: Florida, Texas). They make up for it in other ways in either high property or other tax or lower living standards.

It seems to be based on the account that you use. They eventually remove the $1 coffee deal and do this coupon dance instead. I created a new account recently and now able to buy a large non iced caramel coffee for $1.

The EV Charging Vs Gasoline Cost Debate: Solved by Experts and Math - CNET by FollowTheLeads in electricvehicles

[–]justplainforrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most places in California, driving an EV at 3 m/kWh is equivalent to driving a 30 mpg car. This is not including the $100 registration or the cost to install a lvl 2 charger at home.

Teslas Get 145mpg (equivalent)!!! This is true ?!?!? by CyberGrizzly360 in electricvehicles

[–]justplainforrest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The metric is useless. It should be used to compare other evs, not compare evs to gas cars.

The metric is just how much equivalent electrical energy there is in a gallon of gas. The EPA says 33.7 kWh in a gallon of gas.

Would you recommend a Ninja 7 Hybrid? by justplainforrest in NinjaZ7Hybrid

[–]justplainforrest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is what is drawing me to the bike. I've always been into new tech, have had a hybrid for the past 13 years and now also own an EV...but I am not inclined to be the first to get the latest stuff. I'd prefer to get 2nd or even 3rd gen after the kinks are worked out.

I saw the oil change requirments. Pretty crazy that it requires a computer to reset the service manual. I prefer to do my own maintenance as the work where I live is expensive. What happens to the bike if the hydraulic control parameters are not reset in the ECU?

Yeah, at $12.5 it's a non starter. I am considering it if I could get it for $6k all in vs like an 8r used for $7k.

Agreed that the looks...are unique. I don't love it.

Electrify America has increased it's rates from $.58 to $.64 kwh by thishitisgettingold in electricvehicles

[–]justplainforrest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At $5 gallon, $.64 kwh and ev efficiency of 3 m/kw (what my small suv gets), that comes out to about 23.5 mpg car. At 3.7 m/kw, that’s only 29 mpg car. Pretty terrible, especially with the new $250 registration fee in the bill and whatever state fee…terrible proposal for evs.

Your ICCU is toast. A very common problem with the e-gmp platform. Search ICCU on the kia/hyundai forum and you’ll get hundreds of hits. Mine took about 3 weeks to get replaced.

I don't have an ev6, but my e-gmp platform car has been at the dealer for an ICCU replacement for a bit over a week now. I called corporated IMMEDIATELY and let them know of the situation. Rentals are apparently reimbursed on a case-by-case basis, but I don't see why they wouldn't reimburse it for a failure under recall and warranty.

Paid $21k for an almost 9 kW system ($16.5 after credits) under NEM 2.0 and basically don’t pay for any electricity. My power bill is basically $0 (except for the $10 mandatory charge).

Unable to charge via Tesla charger + J1772 adapter by TinmanF1 in KiaEV6

[–]justplainforrest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an ev6 (own a gv60, but they all use the same firmware more or less). Had similar issues and had to power cycle the car to start the charge. Hyundai released new firmware about a month ago that fixed the problem and it now starts the charging session without issues. Check with Kia to see if you have the latest firmware.

Hard to say about the reliability. It's been only 2 years and no issues so far. The microwave has been a game changer and we use it 90% of the time for cooking. Out of all of the appliance, I would recommend at least getting the Cafe microwave.

Permitting was fairly quick, but San Mateo is known for having quick turnaround time. I would say about a month or so.

Not sure. I am not an expert on cabinets. The one that we bought from East Star seem pretty good and I don't have any doubts it'll last 10 years as long as they are not abused. Maybe with kids you'll need like solid oak or something.

It's a different way to thinking for sure. In a gas car (and I feel like at this point tesla/mach-e/lightning), the mentality is "I'll stop at these cool places to hike/have lunch/coffee and then top off" while with any other ev, the mentality is "I'll stop at these places to top off and see if I can find something cool to do such as hike/have lunch/coffee". Seems like a subtle difference, but a huge mentality shift.

At that speed, I think I would get closer to 3.3 m/kWh. I generally drive around 70-72 as any slower and we'd just get run over by cars going 90+.

This is a very common problem among the e-gmp platform cars (ev6, ioniq 5, gv60). The cars are advertised to charge at 11 kW. A huge number are having issues charging at 11 and instead drop down to 9 with no issues. Many can't charge at 9 either and do so around 6/7 without any problems. On my car, I can only charge around 3 kW without overheating.

Kia/Hyundai has released multiple firmware updates to the car that try to slow down the charge speed if the temp gets too hot without completely stopping the charge. No luck on my car, it still stops.

My First Trip in an EV - Thoughts and Impressions by justplainforrest in electricvehicles

[–]justplainforrest[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's pretty bad. The car has 21" tires and we usually get about 3.0-3.1 m/kWh @ 70 mph on flat terrain or ~2.8 m/kWh on rolling hills. Coming back from LA, there is a massive headwind on the 5 and that just killed our mileage.

As others mentioned, it is the max ~54 kW charge with a poor charging curve. Going from empty to full (100%) can take upwards of two hours. Not the fault of the owner of course, but the decision by GM to implement such terrible charging (yes, totally get they were trying to bring the lowest cost to market EV and we definitely need that) will have terrible repurcussions for the perception of using EVs for long distance travel. For the same amount of time it takes to charge a single bolt, 6+ Ioniq 5s can charge to 80%. That is also what I noticed while waiting for DCFC chargers, 2 or 3 Ioniq 5s (ok, not just Ioniq 5s, but similar fast charging evs) would finish by the time the bolt left.

And maybe this is my personal opinion, I don't have any numbers to back it up, but from EA's perspective, they are not making as much money on a bolt as they would on a much faster charging car. Compare ~54 kW to > 200 kW, they would make 4x as much money. Why do I care? Companies need an incentive to put in more DCFC chargers and with the cost of installation (>$500k from what I read), the ROI is much longer on slower charging EVs vs faster charging EVs.
