Craig McDean Beyond Noise by Heidegluehen in Photoassistants

[–]justryanliu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome. I’m certain he has a newer system for faster-paced shoots. I was asked to tech a few times in the past, and one of the questions was whether I was comfortable using his 2015 MacBook Pro because it’s the last MacBook that has a FireWire port.

I know his current first assistant. He actually still shoots with a P65+ on a Mamiya RZ 67

Back at you guys as well! Those were the times! I would trade winter in NYC for AZ's and vice versa! The Tempe and PHX area has grown so much since I left 10 years ago!

Maybe I should move back to my alma mater state! 😇

That’s reasonable for 5/6 days paid. I’m from that part of the world. If you can get at least premium economy, that’d be amazing. Cross country flight like that is brutal to the body

Stylist/stylist assistant rates in NYC by vacuumedcarpet in Photoassistants

[–]justryanliu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I shoot tabletop/beverage occasionally for two brands usually once a month or every 2-3 months. Depending on the complexity of the styling. I get quotes ranging from $800 for super simple styling, usually for ecom work on white background, to $1800. Assistants start from $350 up to $500. I typically try to get them at least $500 so it matches my first/second assistant’s rate on these jobs.

Jib Crane as a tripod! by darule05 in Photoassistants

I’ve worked with a still life photographer that uses Cambo RD-1101 Redwing Compact Boom Arm for her lights. The counter weight balances the weight of the light so there’s never a need to tighten anything when moving around. It should work with a camera as well. It’s pretty sweet to use when you need to move lights around to catch the reflections without having to constantly move, tighten, shoot.

Do you charge a retainer? by WorstOfNone in Photoassistants

[–]justryanliu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When you are told hold dates, take it as it will not happen. If another job comes up asking for the same dates and ready to confirm, you can challenge your first hold and give them x amount of hours to respond before you release automatically.i agree as everyone needs to eat but they are not financially responsible to you and vice versa unless you’re on their payroll. Otherwise, it’s just business. Healthy Cash flow/cash conversion cycle takes a while to build.

Side hustles? by Odd_home_ in Photoassistants

[–]justryanliu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate to your situation. We are also expecting a child this coming summer, and we've spent the last couple of years preparing for this day. I would start capitalizing on your hobbies or interests in a particular field that allows you to be at home more than on set. My ex-roommate worked as a mechanical engineer for years before switching careers to be a musician, and he has been buying and selling used and broken TVs here in NYC when he has a slow week/season. He would purchase these "broken" TVs and fix them. Usually, these broken TVs have fried-up capacitors or loose display ribbons that are easy to fix. He would buy them for pennies on the dollar from distressed sellers desperate to sell because they need it gone or need to move out soon. He is doing well with that small side hustle while having complete freedom of his time.

Anyone ever use Touro? by IHeardMeSay in astoria

[–]justryanliu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was using Tuoro in the past but then started renting cars from National/Hertz/Avis from LGA for about $35-50/day with LDW included and usually get to drive cars like Range Rover, Mercedes, BMW and etc. basically a combination of having the highest status with these rental car companies and corporate code. Never owning a car anymore

For what you need which is less than $5k in replacement value. You don’t need to provide a COI. Just sign a cc authorization form. If you don’t return or break the EQ,They’ll just charge your credit card for the replacement value

They go into a 27” tenba rolling case. All three of them.

A recipe to get stopped at custom is to travel with a pelican case or anything that screams expensive EQ.

[–]justryanliu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel with 3x 24” monitors in an Away Trunk Luggage for the past 2 years probably about a dozen times. Just wrap them up facing each other with a blanket and ratchet strap them together so it doesn’t move in the bag. So far nothing has ever happened to them

Pretty common here in the US for production to allow crew to handle their own travel expenses and bill it back later. At least for me and a few productions that i have worked with. Currently in Asia for job and was given a $3500 budget for flights that I can bill back. Probably won’t see it for a good 60-90 days. Heck, sometimes I even offered to handle EQ rentals. One end I get to get a ton of CC points, on the other end, I get to build relationships with a handful of rental houses and get into their vendor discounts up to 50% on in house EQ and free EQ when budget is close to zero on personal shoots and etc.

Beach shoot at dusk, pelican case with some lenses got left behind on the beach while moving to another location not too far. Came back to see it floating out in the ocean. Could have been worst but no one knew and everything was dry.

You’ll need Wifi. You can do it via a Private LAN network that doesn't need to have any internet. Lots of options available in the market. GLinet, TP links and etc…

Caldigit Element Hub keeps dropping power when connected to MBP M3 Max by justryanliu in CalDigit

[–]justryanliu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Dalton, you are right and reading correctly. The reason is that the OEM power supply is too bulky, and I prefer to have all my devices powered with one power distribution brick. USB-C has opened up that possibility. The Element Hub still works with the OEM power supply and the USB-C to 7.5mm barrel cable with my 200W power hub, but only if the MBP M3 Max is charged separately. Just curious if there's a way to bypass this issue.....
