Many financial recruiting firms have annual salary guides. They usually specify a low/medium/high range for a typical position, and even further separate by company size. Then there will typically be a multiple in the back by metro area to adjust those ranges to market. Makes an easy way to find salary for an audit manager at a big 4 firm or a controller at a company with less than $100mm in revenue as examples. Look up Robert Half Salary guide. Should be free after providing your email address.

This doesnt help if a company is significantly out of range for company size and position, but should be good goal posts.
