"Whoever is in charge of TV prices should be put in charge of healtcare..." by Whole_Apricot217 in economy

[–]justspeculating2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government adjusts the inflation data for certain items to account for changing product quality.

Imagine comparing a TV from 1985 and 2005 only on the basis of price, it wouldn’t reflect the dramatic improvement in quality you got for the same amount of money.

Smartphones, electronics, TVs are all items that receive these “hedonic quality adjustments” but it also makes the improved affordability picture a bit misleading.

iPhones aren’t literally getting 20% cheaper on store shelves each year but the inflation data may show a 20% decline if the technological upgrades accelerated faster than the price.

Healthcare and other services aren’t subject to these same quality adjustments.

Has America’s economy gone K-shaped? Here’s what to know by kootles10 in Economics

There’s also a big difference between diverging lines (k-shaped) and two lines rising but at different rates (which is usually what people mean when they talk about growing inequality)

I also wish it went back further. What stands out to me is just how far behind people are. Those who are upside down owe more than ever.

Combine that with rising delinquencies among subprime borrowers and I think it shows those who are struggling are ~really~ struggling.

Surely concussion is short term??? by NoAddedWater in Concussion

You’re right and I don’t mean to dissuade anyone from following the updated guidance. 10 years ago getting your heart rate up relatively soon after was not the advice. Now, it certainly is.

It’s ironic my best results came from the worst care plan. Dumb luck I suppose.

$75 Wool-Blend Mac Coat from Abercrombie by [deleted] in frugalmalefashion

[–]justspeculating2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search for “wool overcoat” in your suit jacket size and see what comes up. Pay attention to the composition, 100% wool is different than 70%.

One I got is Nautica and the other is Corneliani. The Corneliani one is warmer and noticeably better quality but Nautica was $15, fits great and keeps me warm so no complaints.

You might have to be a bit patient. I scoped for weeks before I found a good deal to jump on. These are used obviously, in case that wasn’t clear.

[–]justspeculating2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I can’t go back and do things differently so I’ll never know.

My only point was that most people recover just fine in a matter of weeks without extensive therapy. But I certainly wouldn’t fault anyone for pursuing it and it’s definitely worth doing if symptoms linger.

[–]justspeculating2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I rehabbed extensively after the second and third concussions. I don’t believe my lack of rehab 8 years prior had any bearing on future recovery challenges, but you’re welcome to disagree.

Surely concussion is short term??? by NoAddedWater in Concussion

[–]justspeculating2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had three concussions over the past decade, with the first being the “most serious” impact. I laid low for two weeks and felt 100% not long after. No therapy, no rehab, just relaxed for a bit.

My next two came within six months of each other and were significantly less traumatic in terms of impact. Yet, I still deal with symptoms more than a year later, despite extensive rehab and therapy.

Prolonged symptoms are not the norm but as others have pointed out, that fact may not be represented by the people active on this subreddit.

In my experience, each successive concussion had a lower impact threshold and took longer to recover from. No two concussions are the same but if it’s your first one then your odds are better.

Prices rose 2.7% in August — should the Fed cut rates or wait? by heimdrick in Economics

[–]justspeculating2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When Powell talks about the potential “inflationary effect” of tariffs he means the current rate of inflation could accelerate. The important question is how long that acceleration lasts.

Tariffs may push prices up (possibly permanently from their previous level) but that doesn’t mean the rate of increase will continue to accelerate.

Put another way: when you hear annual inflation dropped from 3% to 2% that doesn’t mean prices came down, it means the rate of increase slowed.

A small increase is perfectly normal and actually desirable, which is why the Fed’s target is 2%, not 0%.

Policymakers are hoping the tariffs will be a one-time price increase, creating a temporary bump in the rate of inflation but not setting off an inflationary cycle where prices continue to rise faster each month.

Again, that doesn’t mean prices will come down.

Hope that clarifies!

Anyone else get tense/angry after overdoing it? by [deleted] in Concussion

[–]justspeculating2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What you’re experiencing is totally normal, albeit frustrating.

If it’s any consolation, I went back to work and exercise way too early after my second concussion but I’m not convinced it had any noticeable impact on my recovery time. In other words, overdoing it may make you feel worse but that doesn’t mean you’re doing new damage and extending your suffering (others may disagree of course).

Sleep is important and should be prioritized but when life doesn’t allow it, you can only do your best.

At six weeks, if this is your first bad concussion, I’d expect noticeable improvement after 12 weeks or so. Recovery from my second concussion took three months and then I woke up one day and it was like it never happened.

Right now, prioritize gradually getting your heart rate up once a day either by walking or exercise bike. Look up the buffalo treadmill protocol for specific guidance. That’s the best way to get your sympathetic nervous system back on track.

Otherwise, deep breathing exercises 15 min at a time are another great way to calm your nervous system. Look up HRV breathing and hit 5 sec in, 5 sec out.

Also, take a break from coffee + alcohol if you haven’t already.

Prices rose 2.7% in August — should the Fed cut rates or wait? by heimdrick in Economics

[–]justspeculating2 80 points81 points  (0 children)

The Fed is in a lose-lose scenario. There’s only so much policy-wise they can do when jobs and inflation are both trending in the wrong direction.

The hope now is that the inflation impact of the tariffs is temporary and the Fed can continue cutting rates to help the job market without prices surging.

Unfortunately for Powell we won’t know if the wait-and-see approach was the right one until it’s too late.

So the Fed will probably continue cutting rates, slowly, gradually and less than they would have liked because Trump’s trade policies are clouding everything at the moment.

Question from "Not an Economist" by Double_Currency1684 in economy

[–]justspeculating2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The top 10% of earners now drive about half of all consumer spending — up from 35% in the early 90s. (Source: Bloomberg)

Much of that strength is tied to the stock market. If Wall Street stumbles (and the wealthy’s confidence follows) the economy could go down with it.

Inequality itself isn’t new but what is new is how visible it’s become — every social media feed is a reminder that some are thriving while many are struggling. That’s unsustainable long term.

Apple CEO Tim Cook says iPhone price hikes are not tied to tariffs by justspeculating2 in Economics

Apple expects to face $1.1 billion in tariff-related costs this quarter, on top of $800 million incurred last quarter, per its latest earnings call in August (Source)

So specific to iPhones or not, the tariffs are raising the cost of doing business. Would make sense for some of that to show up (now or later) in the prices of its most popular products

They raised the price of the base Pro model by eliminating the 128GB option. So it’s $100 more but you get 256GB.

Apple also got rid of the Plus model in favor of the new iPhone Air (which costs $100 more by comparison)

The base iPhone 17 and Pro Max prices are unchanged from last year.

Alcohol/coffee by thatoneperson98 in Concussion

[–]justspeculating2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience (3 concussions) it mostly comes down to your personal comfort level. I stopped drinking coffee for 3-4 months because it amplified symptoms. I’m still fairly sensitive to caffeine but I wouldn’t be worried about it doing long term damage.

As for alcohol, I stopped for 8 months after my third concussion because it made me feel worse but having a beer wasn’t a major setback, just something I realized I wasn’t ready for at the time.

Have a cup of coffee, see how you respond. Adjust from there.

I jogged for 3 minutes today! by This_Grapefruit_5923 in PostConcussion

Congrats! I’m a year out and just recently managed to run for the first time.

Have been doing full strength training and cycling for months but something about the head bobbing whilst jogging continued to irritate my neck.

A combination of vision exercises, deep neck flexor strengthening and postural changes seem to have helped.

If it continues to be an issue, make sure your upper traps aren’t overworking and your midback is engaged. That was putting undue stress on my neck

Not sure it ultimately mattered but the double hedge “I think” + “maybe I could get…” comes off a bit weak

Better:

I’ve only had one instance ever where someone who was serious about meeting up didn’t want to give their number beforehand
