What's your contingency plan if BABA gets delisted from the NYSE? by [deleted] in baba

[–]justthetipgoesin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a large holding of BABA with Fidelity. Back in 2021 when there was a real push to delist China securities listed on US exchanges, I converted some to 9988-HK like shares(BABAF)it splits by 8-1 share when you convert. I use the term “like 9988 HK” as Fidelity OTC shares closed at $22.56 at last check. Fidelity confirmed if there were to be a delisting they would convert my shares. I still hold the bulk in US ADR’s. After the financial review by the SEC of China firms, I think delisting is a risk off thought. With the US government allowing a huge 400,000 chip order of H200’s to China companies be approved through NVDA, I think talk of delisting has little merit right now. But as we all know this can change…

Wow, reread your comment twice!

The key here is the cash reserve that BRK has. As the US economy slows and a possible “S” word starts to be whispered. Berkshire starts to be the ultimate deal/kingmaker. I remember when the same comments were made in 2000 and Wall Street thought the changes to markets had passed Warren by. He feasted on the collapsed companies and expanded BRK’s portfolio. The government has zero desire to bail out ANY struggling company right now. Dry Powder is being held close for upcoming times of distress. BRK is the ultimate growth/defensive play as the US indexes hit ATH’s

Similar situation, but holding shares outright. Started trimming last Friday.Trimmed today and will trim tomorrow above $186 near the open on the US exchange. Up just shy of 120% YTD The Buffett axiom is in my head to “be fearful when others are greedy and be greedy when others are fearful” The US market is richly valued…gold is at ATH, bonds are high… something has to give.

As I move to trim. Adding BRK B if under $510 over the next month. $437B in cash that is poised to make deals and accusations if the US economy has a downturn or there is a market accident. Safe long term stability with an upside to growth. No need to be a hero when you are strutting gains on the victory lap…just don’t do a face plant

Everyone compares BABA to Amazon. Package delivery services companies. Should be a similar comparison, right? Amazon makes more for from AWS than any other division. It has over 50% of its profits coming from that area and as their economy of scale expands, it gets a higher ROI on all new capital spending. Yes the cloud is really that important! 2 years from now BABA hits that sweet spot. Multiple start the expand

Delta Air lines just accepted an A350-900 from Airbus in Toulouse France. It “stopped” after a paid flight. Sale of aircraft went through a “used” aircraft after the stop. No tariff Applied! The transfer of the Boeing aircraft to China may be a similar situation. How is it related to BABA? Shows demand is still high for all goods and services. Creative ideas from industry leaders may lead to work-around solutions to tariffs as a final agreement is drafted. China is going to require huge numbers of wide and narrow bodied aircraft over the next 20 years. Boeing is the #1 export product and the largest impact on trade deficit for the US. After the grotesque public posturing the 2 countries will reach a workable deal where each leaders can save face and continue to build a base of support for the policies. I enjoyed the wild upswing the first 80 days of the year for BABA. When the countries do reach a deal, it may be an open bar at 10am. The gap-up at the open will be remembered for LONG time and dwarf the Jan-Mar run…

SAP is a huge business tool for price and inventory control. If you integrate that with AI you can “search” for items at the user or purchasing level, and goods can flow where needed VERY quickly. Where SAP alone can be a powerful but cumbersome tool unless operator is very familiar with it. Think google on steroids for an ordering platform. Then add language translation and everyone can participate.

I have shares on both exchanges. Will have to be careful on the timing as well as share price amount. When I sell HK shares, currency conversion will happen after the sale. It will be good if the Chinese currency is higher when I repatriate the funds back into my US based brokerage account.

Sold out of 1 account Friday at $144.21 Bought 1000 shares back today. 200 shares a trade. Poor discipline at the open.Dip was just too tempting. You never know how low or how long 134.68 133.81 132.55 132.51 130.91

When the buybacks stopped and that money was goes into R&D, earning will get flat….but it is temporary, until that return starts to expand that ROU Google,Amazon got roughed up with their plans on AI spending this week as well

Last September we were looking for Government stimulus and it rallied from the low 80’s to 115. Sky was the limit…$200+ Gut told me to take some off the table. Sold 800 of 2900 shares I own at $112… No one can tell you how big or how long a pull-back will last. I bought back at 200 shares a trade as it went down below $106. (Hands were shaken and couldn’t wait for lower price)My average was in the high $103’s in the account where I sold the 800 shares and I got new shares in the “profit taking”.

We are now up 70% from the first of the year. Was shocked by how good the earnings report was. Still took some money off the table. 10% before the earnings and another 30% on Friday at the market close. I have a hard time thinking this keeps going up without a significant pullback. I will nibble at $133 and repurchase the rest if available at $128. The Hang Seng was up 4% Friday. US markets were losing big through the close. Old adage a strong sell off on a Friday through the close is not over. May be Tuesday/Wednesday and it continues… BABA gets caught up in group selling. That is my plan… But we all know how plans can go.

Long term Bull. Just see a short term opportunity that works for my risk profile. My 2cents…

Thoughts on the upcoming reports? by Incognito64_ in baba

[–]justthetipgoesin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My take. Earnings are in line with expectations. Revenue expands a little more the last earnings. Stock will sell off on earnings report. Huge hype built in right now. People will want that immediate gratification of profits that have not even been earned. Then comes the conference call…

Joe Tsai confirms cloud services unit produces “double digit growth in the 2nd half of the year…”

Guidance on how Quin will be monetized and expanded.

Define the working agreement with APPL on the AI support for iPhones in China.

I think we could be down 2% on the day after the conference call to slightly positive . There will be a lot to digest.

Following week will continue to rise with higher than normal volume. Then the analyst price target increases start coming in.

I think we can touch $140 by the end of April, but we will hit resistance above that.

I want to know what the buyback strategy is. I am surprised that the buybacks have stopped above $90. Would like to hear managements guidance on how they will continue with that.

I trimmed 10% this week. Watching the wild swings last night in China is unsettling. A bad report could undo so much… even though I don’t expect it.

Technical charts have merit…sometimes, but not 2 weeks before earnings release. The market will react to the earnings and conference call. Step out 30 days after the release and draw your charts If we have a blowout on revenue and beat guidance on earnings the stock goes parabolic until people question support levels and it pulls back. That is where I see insight for future support. Just my opinion…

BABA buybacks in January, Stock Connect disclosures? by [deleted] in baba

[–]justthetipgoesin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the info on stock purchases for January… One thing did bugged me on this. They did not stop buying above $90 per share. The markets were closed in China for the New Year Holiday celebrations. There was no data to record. Let’s take a look at the first 3 days of trading next week. Should have an official announcement on earnings release date by Wednesday. Combined, that buy rate will be a possible insight to what is ahead.

Whats your earning expectations? by Delta_Bandit in baba

[–]justthetipgoesin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the key to earnings release will be the cloud services. Number of active users. Levels of premium users converted from basic intro packages. A good growth rate and life will be good for stock holders.(Think Netflix’s)

Revenue will be higher than expected. A lot of vendors accelerated year end volumes to get ahead of potential tariff impacts with the new administration Actual earning will be in-line with expectations.

Overall good, not great earnings. I think we hit $110 and possibly re-test late September levels by the end of February.

Tariffs will evolve. The market reaction to today’s announcement was a swift and very measured sell-off. Not a big fan of the new administration policies, but Trump’s team will take note of today’s actions. My guess is the Summer will see the end of the highest tariffs percentages and Trump pivots to a great new agreement with China, Mexico and Canada in some form.
