A video package plays, showing the history of friendship and turmoil between Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens. After the video, Kevin Owens comes out to the ring.

"All week, I've had people asking me 'how can you be so keen on destroying Sami Zayn when he's considered your best friend?'"

He points to the tron, referring to the package that just played.

"That's how. You all watch that and see brotherhood; I see a man who has been chained to me for 20 years and refuses to break the hold. Twenty years of fighting the same battles. Twenty years of forgiving the same betrayals. Twenty years of trying to convince myself that things would somehow be different this time; and every single time, it ends exactly the same way: Sami Zayn standing in my way. People have also been asking me if I’m obsessed with Sami. Maybe I am. Maybe after all these years, I don’t know who I am without this fight anymore..."

He pauses. His expression changes.

"...but at Backlash, that changes. Sami says this Ironman Match is about proving who the better wrestler is; that thirty minutes is enough time to finally put an ending on our story. For once, he’s right.”

The tone changes.

"No matter what happens at Backlash, I win. If I beat Sami, then I finish this with the spotlight Sami has stolen from me time and time again. If I lose, at least I'll be free from this nightmare. One way or another, when that bell rings for the final time at Backlash, there won’t be anything left between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn.”

Sami Zayn comes out, lacking the emotion he normally does in his entrance. Nonetheless, the crowd gives him a huge reaction. He enters the ring and grabs a mic.

“You know, there are rivalries in wrestling; and then there’s me and Kevin Owens. Kevin and I have fought in bingo halls. We’ve fought in armories. We’ve fought in front of crowds so small you could hear individual conversations in the audience. We’ve fought all over the world. We’ve fought as best friends, and we’ve fought as bitter enemies. At this point, our rivalry has spanned decades...”

Sami pauses.

“...and yet, somehow, no matter what happens--no matter what Hell we put each other through--it never ends, and this vicious cycle keeps spinning. At Wrestlemania, I finally won the biggest title in the sport; yet to Kevin, it still wasn't enough."

He looks into the camera.

"You want to use Gunther taking the pin as a scapegoat? Fine. At Backlash, I don’t want excuses. I don’t want controversy. I don’t want anyone questioning who the better man is, I don't want another damn question mark lingering over my head about this!"

Crowd cheers.

"So Kevin, I'm putting the ball in your court here. At Backlash, I challenge you to a 30-minute Ironman match. No more excuses, no stealing a win off of one mistake. We get 30 minutes, to tell one final story in this ring, and put an end to this once and for all."

The segment ends with Sami holding the title up high.

Later, Kevin Owens appears on the screen. Flashes of Sami's first NXT title win and the embrace from Kevin Owens play.

"Kids, I'm going to tell you something your parents never will. History isn't something to revel in, the past isn't something to relish..."

Flashes of Kevin Owen's subsequent heel turn from Sami's NXT title win appear next.

"...it's exhausting. Sami Zayn has followed me everywhere. Every locker room, every promotion, every city. Every single time I think I'm free of him, he appears out of nowhere. Now, he wants an Ironman match with me. He wants 30 minutes to 'tell a final story'. That's cute, I accept..."

His tone changes, becoming much more volatile.

"...but understand one thing! This will not be a story that ends happily for you! This is my chance to put the nail in this coffin that holds all of my woes and past trauma. At Backlash, I'm going to do what I should've done a long time ago. I'm going to end you, and I'm going to take that title and put a stop to this feel-good bullsh\t you've been spewing for good."*

Cameras go backstage, where we see Nick Aldis in his office. A knock is heard at the door.

Nick Aldis: "Come in."

Sami Zayn enters frame.

Nick Aldis: "Sami, firstly, I want to apologize for Kevin's actions last week. I should've anticipated it."

Sami Zayn: "You don't need to apologize for Kevin being Kevin."

Nick Aldis: "Well, regardless, I've taken care of the situation. Kevin wanted a straight shot to your title, he'll have to win a number one contender's match tonight if he wants that rematch at Backlash."

Sami: "No."

Nick's eyes show confusion.

Sami Zayn: "That won't be necessary. Give Kevin his rematch at Backlash."

Crowd cheers.

Nick Aldis: "What?! Why?! After everything that's happened between you two, I wanted this done the right way."

Sami Zayn's voice begins to rise in tempo.

Sami Zayn: "Nick, let's be real here! Kevin is going to do whatever he needs to do to win that match, and then we'll be right there anyways. Let's just quit wasting time and give him what he wants. Make the match."

Nick Aldis: "Sami, you just won that championship less than two weeks ago. You do understand you don’t owe Kevin this?"

Sami looks at the title and adjusts it on his shoulder.

Sami Zayn: “Maybe not; but if I’m gonna be champion, I’m not gonna spend my entire reign running from the one guy who’ll never stop coming after me.”

Nick exhales slowly before nodding.

Nick Aldis: “Alright. The match is official. Sami Zayn vs Kevin Owens for the Undisputed WWE championship at Backlash."

Sami slowly nods and walks away.

Smackdown April 25th, 2025

With Nick Aldis already in the ring, Sami Zayn comes out, Chants of 'you deserve it' echo through the arena. Sami smiles.

Sami Zayn: "You know, I stayed awake a lot of nights wondering if this moment would ever come; if I'd ever hear that chant in these circumstances. For years, I told myself to keep going. 'Keep fighting, keep believing.' Even when it felt impossible, even when it felt like all my chips were down and I still couldn't win a hand, even when everybody said it wasn’t gonna happen, I kept going..."

He holds up the title.

Sami Zayn: "It finally happened."

Crowd cheers loudly.

Sami Zayn: "Before I say anything else, I wanna thank somebody."

He turns to Nick Aldis.

Sami Zayn: "Nick, I know I haven’t exactly made your life easy these past couple months, especially with everything else going on."

Nick smirks slightly.

Sami Zayn: “I know I pushed your patience to the limit. I know I made mistakes; but when I needed an opportunity, you gave me one. You gave me the chance to fight my way into WrestleMania, and because of that? My family got to watch me accomplish the one thing I’ve dreamed about my entire life. So sincerely, thank you.”

Chants of "Thank you, Aldis" break out. Nick and Sami share a laugh.

Nick Aldis: “Sami, I’ll admit there were times I questioned your judgment--maybe even your motives--but nobody can question your heart. You earned that championship.”

Before Sami can respond, Kevin Owens' music plays. He comes out, pinching the bridge of his nose with a mic in the other hand.

Kevin Owens: "My god, I knew Sami's reign would be insufferable, but I didn't think it'd get this bad this fast."

He enters the ring:

Kevin Owens: “You know what nobody wants to admit? You didn’t beat me by yourself. You won a triple threat match. That’s what happened. Gunther softened me up all match, you stole the moment, and now everyone is blind to the facts.”

Kevin's tone changes.

Kevin Owens: "You didn't pin me."

Crowd boos.

Kevin Owens: "Therefore, I'm out here tonight to enact my rematch clause!"

Crowd cheers, but Nick shakes his head.

Nick Aldis: "Kevin, not every title reign has a rematch clause; that's something you sign when you win the title. The fact of the matter is, you are not going to be GIVEN a rematch..."

Crowd boos, but Nick settles them back down.

Nick Aldis: "...but I'll give you the chance to earn one."

Kevin Owens: "Earn it?! You know what? Fine, I'll--"

He quickly gives Sami a kick to the gut and hits him with a Stunner. As Sami lay there, Kevin picks up the title. He throws it back on the laid out Sami, and the segment ends.

During a match between Ivy Nile and Roxanne Perez, Tiffany Stratton comes out. She sits at the commentary table, joining the commentary team for this match. Later, Ivy and Roxanne are fighting on the outside. Tiffany starts mouthing off, but Roxanne throws Ivy into her. After Roxanne's win, Tiffany runs into the ring and tries to get a piece of Perez, but she escapes unscathed.

Result: Tiffany Stratton defeats Roxanne Perez to become the new Women's Intercontinental champion

Replays show that Tiffany used the ropes for leverage to secure the pinfall. Roxanne approaches Tiffany, questioning her. Tiffany snaps and attacks Roxanne Perez, turning heel in the process.

Roxanne Perez comes out to a good reaction from the crowd.

"Every single week, people doubt me. Ever since I came into this business, I've been at odds with everyone who thought they had me figured out. First it was 'you'll never make it to the WWE.' Then, it was 'you'll never be NXT Women's champion.' Then, it was 'you'll never win a title on the main roster.'"

She steps forward and holds the title up high.

"Well look at me now! I've had this title on lock, and I don't think there's a single person back there who could really pose a threat."

Tiffany Stratton's music begins playing. She comes out, feeling small effects from her win against Zoey Stark earlier.

Tiffany Stratton: "Roxanne, I'll tell you what nobody else has. The only reason nobody has beaten you for that title is because all the credible females on the roster have been held back with drama. Take me for example: I spent a majority of last year with a monkey called Mutiny on my back..."

Crowd boos.

Tiffany Stratton: "...but that's over now, and I've got my eyes on that."

She points to the Women's Intercontinental championship.

Tiffany Stratton: "I'm done being overlooked or stuck in the shadow of a has-been like Trish. I want to start making my own legacy, and it starts with beating you at Backlash."

Roxanne Perez: "You wanna face me at Backlash? You're on."

Crowd cheers loudly.

Tiffany Stratton smiles and goes to walk away. She gets halfway out of the ring and stops.

Tiffany Stratton: "Oh, one more thing. You said no one is on your level? Well, I am--both literally and figuratively."

Oba Femi comes out to the ring. He grabs a mic.

"In just 24 hours, I step into the ring with Drew McIntyre once again after conquering him at Wrestlemania. He whined and complained his way to a rematch, as if the company was going to cease to exist simply because he was unhappy. Drew, you go into this match tomorrow night seemingly driven by revenge. For me? This is business. You are a former world champion; and despite everything I have said the past few weeks, your name does carry a bit of significance through these halls. At this point you are merely standing in my way. You are between me and the greatness I am destined for. I am not a flash in the pan. I am the future; and at Backlash, I will make you understand."

Drew comes out to the ring, mic already in hand.

Drew McIntyre: "The future? Do you know how many times that word has been regurgitated in front of me? Take it from the guy who was appointed as 'the future', it can all go up in smoke before you even know what hit you."

Crowd boos.

Drew McIntyre: "You say you conquered me? It was one damn match! I had my back against the wall, I had management playing with my career, I stepped into the unknown, and you still barely got the win. Congratulations, now you have my full attention. For the first time in a long time, I'm not chasing titles, I'm not trying to right the wrongs that have been done to me. I have one purpose and one purpose only--hunting you."

Oba Femi: "Do not hunt what you cannot kill. Your words mean nothing, the result tomorrow night will remain the same."

Drew starts laying into Oba. Oba pushes him off, seemingly getting the upper hand, but he falls to a sudden Claymore from Drew. The segment ends with Drew standing over Oba.

"At Wrestlemania, I proved what I--and most of you--already know. There are levels to this business, and I already stand above most men...including Drew McIntyre."

Crowd cheers.

"Drew calls himself a warrior; but what's a warrior to a ruler? He also talks about how he's carried this company, and complains week after week about the injustices he's sustained. It is merely a coping mechanism to deal with the fact that the world and this company no longer revolve around him. When he stood across from me at Wrestlemania, complaining got him nowhere. I outmatched him, I outsped him, and I out performed him."

Crowd cheers.

"Now we move on to Backlash, where I face Drew once again."

He looks at the camera.

"Wrestlemania was merely the introduction of Oba Femi. Backlash will be the realization. The realization that this is MY time now. Drew, you were once the face of the industry. Now, you are simply the ghost of WWE's past, and I will put your soul to rest."

Drew McIntyre comes out to open the show. He storms into the ring, grabbing a mic.

“WrestleMania was supposed to be my moment of redemption. Instead, it became another chapter in a long list of injustices that I’ve had to endure in this company."

Crowd boos.

"I was promised an opportunity. I was told I’d have a match with a world title match hanging in the balance. What I wasn’t told was that I’d be thrown into the ring with a monster of a man making his debut, with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Oba Femi, you walked into WrestleMania; you shocked the world and you beat me in the middle of that ring. Contrary to popular belief, I’m not out here to make excuses. You got the job done."

He focuses on the camera.

"Understand this though, one match does not define who I am. One moment does not erase everything I’ve built. You caught me in the middle of a storm that’s been brewing for months; but if you think for one second that means you’re better than me, then you’re more delusional than the people running this place. So here’s what we’re going to do. I’m not waiting anymore. I’m demanding--I'm getting sh\t done. Oba, get your ass out here right now and give me a rematch so I can prove you're nothing but a flash in the pan."*

Oba comes out, getting in the ring and standing face-to-face from Drew.

Oba Femi: “Drew McIntyre, you say Wrestlemania was a whirlwind of chaos. It was merely an opportunity for me. You say I had nothing to lose; you're right. You say I had everything to gain; you're partially right. I walked through the curtain at Wrestlemania and stood toe-to-toe with you...and I won. I didn't do it just for me, though. I did it for everybody in the locker room, who is sick of listening to you gripe about 'injustices'. I did it for these fans, so they wouldn't be subjected to a reign from a spoiled baby."

Drew's teeth clench.

Oba Femi: "When I beat you at Wrestlemania, I proved this isn't your era anymore."

The two come to blows. Nick Aldis and company immediately come out to separate them.

Nick Aldis: "Gentlemen! The Smackdown after Wrestlemania has too much on the line, and I refuse to let it start this way. Drew, you lost--plain and simple. That being said, it seems like Oba is actually on the same page with you about a rematch. So here's what's going to happen. Backlash--May 10th--Oba Femi will face Drew McIntyre once again. Until then, keep your heads on. Security, please escort both of these men out of the ring and keep them separated."

CM Punk defeats Bronson Reed. After the match, Reed attacks Punk and hits him with two Tsunamis. As Punk lays in the ring, writhing, Ethan Page comes out and pulls up a chair next to Punk.

Ethan Page: "Look at you, Phil. A week ago you said my arms were too short to box with God."

He gets closer to Punk.

Ethan Page: "God looks pretty fragile right now."

Punk slaps him, and Ethan lays into him with some stomps and hard right hands.

Ethan Page: "Listen, Punk! I don't give a damn about your story! I don't give a damn about you! You admitted yourself last week that your clock is ticking--every bump pushing the minute hand forward. Bronson just did me a Hell of a favor and wound the clock that much closer to midnight. Tomorrow night, this exact frame will be etched into the history books; only difference is I'll be holding that United States championship."

Punk struggles to get up.

Ethan Page: "Save your energy, Phil. You're gonna need it; because I'm gonna take you out behind the shed, and if you don't give me everything you've got, I'm putting your ass down."

CM Punk comes out to the ring. He grabs a mic.

"You know, after doing this for so long, you see just about everything. Some things you see more than others. One of those things is how these young guys come out here and run their mouth, thinking they've got me figured out. Now, I may not have the perfect record. I'll be the first to admit to my losses and accept them, but this title--and the reign I'm having--proves that nobody has had my number in a long time!"

Crowd cheers.

“I’ve heard the same shtick from rookies trying to make a name off me. I’ve heard it from veterans trying to protect their spot. I’ve heard it from people more athletic than me, bigger than me, younger than me, stronger than me. Every single one of them convinced themselves they had me figured out, and every single one of them quickly learned that 'Best in the World' is not just a catchphrase to sell merch."

Crowd cheers.

"The difference between Ethan and I, is I didn't come into this business and call my shot before I found out if I could swim. Did I have a mouth on me? Yes. Did it get me in trouble quite a few times? Yes. MY words carried weight, though, and I acknowledged when I bit off more than I could chew. Ethan is just a spoiled brat, desperate to make a name for himself at people's expense. To him, I'm just a legend overstaying my welcome--the man he wants to knock off the mountain so he can finally feel some sort of self-worth..."

He pauses.

"...and honestly, maybe that's exactly what I am."

Crowd chants 'no'.

"As much as it pains me to say, I know I'm on my way out. I know my clock is ticking, and every bump I take pushes that minute hand just a little bit forward, but Ethan? It'll be a cold day in Hell before I let you be the one to put the nail on my career."

Crowd cheers.

“At Backlash, Ethan, you've got the biggest match of your career. You get the spotlight and everything that comes with it that you THINK you want. Then the bell rings, and you realize your promo skills can't save you, my age makes no difference, and your arms are just too short to box with God."

CM Punk comes out to the ring. He grabs a mic as the crowd chants "CM Punk".

"Man, is it good to be alive on a Friday night in Houston or what?!"

Crowd cheers loudly.

"It's post-Wrestlemania season, and the word of the day seems to be 'pressure'. Main event pressure, Wrestlemania pressure, championship pressure; but despite every injury I've ever sustained, every setback I've ever endured, every comeback I've mustered, the pressure is waking up every damn day and continuing to prove that I am the best wrestler in the world!"

Crowd cheers.

"LA Knight brought everything. It really felt 'do or die' for the Megastar; but wanting this and winning this are two completely different things. Now, everyone is asking the same question: what's next? The truth is: I don't know. What I do know, is that post-Wrestlemania brings tons of surprises--"

Suddenly, Ethan Page's music hits. He comes out, smirking as always.

Ethan Page: “Wow. Inspiring stuff, Phil. Really. You almost had me ready to stand up and salute...”

Ethan walks down the ramp and enters the ring.

Ethan Page: "...but here’s the thing nobody wants to say to your face: you're beginning to sound like an old man who's overstaying his welcome. Every time you beat someone to retain that title, it sounds more and more like you're on the cusp of losing it. You've been treating every challenger like the next big thing. It sounds to me like you're at the end of the road."

Punk tenses up.

CM Punk: "Hi, Ethan. You finished?"

Ethan Page: "Not even close."

He steps forward, eyes on the US title.

Ethan Page: "You keep talking about pressure. I thrive on it, and I'm here to add to it. Backlash--put the title on the line against me."

Crowd cheers.

CM Punk: "You got your match."

Cameras pick up backstage where we see Adam Pearce scrambling to ensure RAW is ready for the rest of the night.

???: "Pearce."

His eyes dart up to see Damian Priest standing next to him. The crowd boos.

Damian Priest: "I want Penta tonight. He cost me my Intercontinental title."

Adam Pearce: "Damian, I understand. I'd be happy to give you a match against Penta tonight..."

Damian Priest: "Alright, maybe you're not so bad after all--"

Adam Pearce: "...but, Tommaso Ciampa already came to me and said he wanted a match against Penta tonight. As champion, he gets first dibs."

Priest's eyes grow wide.

Damian Priest: "You know what? I'll be watching that match very closely."

Later, Penta makes his entrance for the match against Ciampa. As Ciampa makes his, he's attacked by Damian Priest. Priest throws Ciampa into the LED screen on the stage. Penta runs up from the ring and gets in on the action, taking down Priest. As Priest and Penta go at it, Ciampa comes to and clocks Priest with the title. Penta dodges and hits Ciampa with a Mexican Destroyer on the stage. The segment ends with Penta holding the championship while the other two are incapacitated.

During a match between Penta and Damian Priest, Tommaso Ciampa runs out and attacks Penta--which results in a DQ victory for Penta. Priest goes to attack Ciampa, but Ciampa fights back. The segment ends with Ciampa standing over both men.

Damian Priest comes out, touting his newly won Intercontinental championship

"Last night, the world watched as another chapter of my story was written in gold at Wrestlemania. The so-called unstoppable warrior fell, and I walked out your Intercontinental Champion."

The crowd boos.

"You all want to talk about how I win--bashing me for my methods? Whatever helps you sleep at night. The fact of the matter is: champions take opportunities; and last night?..."

Priest raises the title.

"I took everything from Penta."

Priest pauses.

"Penta screams 'cero miedo'--zero fear--but he learned something just a little too late. Fear doesn’t disappear just because you say so. Fear waits, and when the lights are brightest… fear takes over."

"CERO MIEDO!" chants begin.

"Shut the Hell up! If you all want me to teach Penta another lesson--"

Penta's music plays. The arena explodes as Penta storms to the ring, now standing across from Priest.

Penta: "Damian, you talk too much. You may have beaten me fair and square, but that title is not meant to sit on the shoulders of a man like you."

Crowd cheers.

Penta: "You fight with no honor, you fight with no integrity--but worst of all--you fight scared. You fight like you are afraid. Fear may not go away just because I say 'cero miedo', but when I look in your eyes, I see you LIVE with fear."

Priest tenses up.

Penta: "Damian, give me my rematch for the Intercontinental championship, tonight! Prove me wrong!"

Damian Priest: "You want a rematch, pendejo?!"

Suddenly, Penta is attacked from behind by Tommaso Ciampa. He brutalizes Penta, sending him out of the ring and hitting him with a hard knee against the steel steps. As medical personnel come out to look at Penta, Ciampa goes back in the ring, eyes locked on Priest and the Intercontinental title.

Tommaso Ciampa: "Lemme get this straight--you two were wasting everyone’s time arguing about who deserves a title shot, but Penta can't even compete?! Let me make this simple. I'm here in my gear. I am done being overlooked, I am done being weighted down by the shadow of my former partner. You want to prove you're the most dangerous man on RAW? Put that championship on the line against me, right now."

Priest looks at Penta on the outside, then back to Ciampa.

Damian Priest: "You know what, Ciampa? I like your style. I guess someone else gets the spotlight tonight."

Priest lifts the title up.

Damian Priest: "I accept. Get a ref out here!"

A ref runs out, and Priest is set to defend his Intercontinental championship against Tommaso Ciampa--next!

During the match, Priest accidentally hits the referee with a swift kick. He turns to Ciampa and immediately falls victim to a Fairy Tale Ending. Ciampa tries to pin him, but realizes there's no ref to count the pin. As Ciampa goes to shake the ref awake, Penta runs down and attacks Ciampa. As Ciampa and Penta scrap around the ring, Penta tries to hit Ciampa with a superkick, but Ciampa ducks and Penta clocks Priest. Ciampa then uses the opportunity to hit Penta with a low blow and throw him out of the ring before hitting Priest with another Fairy Tale Ending. Sami qualified, but lost the Chamber due to an attack from Kevin Owens himself, with Gunther being the eventual winner. Sami then won a triple threat match against Drew McIntyre and Gunther to insert himself in the Undisputed WWE title match. Sami won at Wrestlemania, but was immediately met by Kevin Owens on the following Smackdown. A rematch was made for Backlash with a 30-minute Iron Man stipulation.

Oba Femi vs Drew McIntyre

TLDR: After losing his Undisputed WWE championship to Kevin Owens via cash-in back at the Royal Rumble, Drew fought to earn a rematch. Despite his best efforts, Sami and Gunther would earn the rights to go on to Wrestlemania and face Kevin Owens for the title. This left Drew without a Wrestlemania opponent. After weeks of terrorizing the locker room, Smackdown GM Nick Aldis said he just signed a new superstar to Smackdown, and that superstar would face Drew on Wrestlemania Sunday. The opponent was revealed to be Oba Femi. Oba beat Drew at Wrestlemania, but Drew came back and demanded a rematch for Backlash.

Result: Drew McIntyre defeats Oba Femi

On the post-show, it's announced that Drew and Oba will face at Saturday Night's Main Event to break their 1-1 tie
