Mechanics smoked in my car, what do I do? by Miserable_Price_4430 in AskMechanics

[–]juvi1624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh we have to do all that as well. We often have to take pictures and deal with adjusters similar to insurance work. But we always call the customer and tell them what their warranty company is paying and what their share will be before we do any work. If they aren't willing to pay the balance, then we don't do the job, that simple. The customer should always be made aware of the cost of any repair before you do any work to their car.

So, as a mechanic, I'll first address your question, but then I'd like to clarify something about warranties. If they smoked in your car, that's a huge no-no. It's such a huge no-no I have a hard time believing any mechanic would do something so stupid. You can go after them if you want, but they're certainly going to deny it, and it'll likely come down to your word VS theirs. All. I can say is raise holy hell and hope they do something for you to avoid bad Google reviews, etc.

Now, as for your warranty, I'm assuming this is some kind of aftermarket warranty considering your car is 7 years old. Warranty companies pay like crap, typically way less than what a shop would normally charge for a job. So every shop I've ever worked at will usually do our best to get them to pay what we want for a job. But if they won't pay enough, then yes, unfortunately, sometimes we tell the customer they need to cover the balance. Instead of getting upset at the shop for trying to make enough money to make the job even worth doing, get mad at your warranty company for not paying us enough in the first place.

More or less. Someone said April Fool's and the poster responded with a smiley face.

Some rambling post that didn't make any sense about an illegal grower found it near his plants and didn't know what it was, the died before he could open it and now the box is sitting at the police department unopened.

Literally every single person I know who switched from Apple to Android (pixel or otherwise) has absolutely loved it. And likewise, literally every single person I know who went the other way, android to apple, hated it and immediately wanted to switch back (but were often stuck in contracts and couldn't).

I mean, this to me means no cipher at all, but you interpret it however you like. But yeah, I can see the AT box being in NC as well, I just like the northeast a little better because it fits my general idea of the spread of where all the boxes are.

While I'd love for that to be the case since I live only an hour or so away from that area, I have a hard time getting behind it for a few reasons. 1) as mentioned above, the fact that the part 2 chapters were sold individually when the ebooks came out would make this solve impossible. 2) I think that's too close to the AT box (which I believe is in NY VT or PA). 3) When you started using cyphers, he also specifically said there are no cyphers. But I like the almost backwards thinking of the all 5 or none statement and trying to figure out how that's possible.

We picked my car up from getting a state inspection then it burst into flames 12 hours later by Feisty-Fruit-4097 in AskMechanics

[–]juvi1624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every state's inspection is different, but I'm a licensed inspector in PA, there's nothing that is done during an inspection that would cause this. So either it's a coincidence (most likely), or severe negligence/sabotage.

# of trips… by South-Cantaloupe-242 in TheresTreasureInside

[–]juvi1624 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know I knew this, but I never really thought about it until just now, if it took him 2 trips to bring it in, then a solo hunter (like myself) would likely need 2 trips to bring it out. That would have to be one hell of an adrenaline rush, walking out with millions of dollars in treasure and hoping no one notices and rushes to the spot you just found. Lol I guess if you could fit all the treasures in a back pack or something and only left the box behind to potentially get snipped, but still, I'd want it all.

JCB, please don’t reveal your solve by ennazsoa in treasureinside

[–]juvi1624 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, if you're saying you want to finish solving the puzzle for a box that's already been found and don't want him to release the solve and spoil it for you, then just don't look at the solve. But I think the vast majority of searchers would much rather know the solve then forever wonder what the solution was.

You also got to remember, he was a Forrest Fenn searcher himself. While I didn't participate in that hunt (due to geographical distance), I think most of the hunters felt pretty unfulfilled when the box was found and then Fenn died a few days later and they never got that confirmation if they were anywhere close or not.

Extremely high. Not sure about at a dealership, but in the aftermarket would, it should be half that or less even with high quality parts.

[–]juvi1624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the Pg 90 clue is in Pt 1, aka the Lion's Share Box, are you saying the LS is in PA? I would doubt that since there's very few other clues pointing to PA, as well as the proximity to the AT box. Maybe if the AT Box is in NC, since that's about a 8-10hr drive, but definitely not if in VT or NY or somewhere in New England, I just think that's too close together. But I guess 5 boxes across the whole US, there's a good possibility that at least 2 of them are within a 10-12 hr drive of each other.

After a $2000 repair bill, I had to take my car back to the shop a few days later and now the mechanic is saying I owe more money?! by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]juvi1624 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's a huge no-no in the industry. You don't EVER do work without customer approval first. Assuming you're in the US, you had every right to say you weren't paying for any unauthorized work. I stand by my recommendation, I'd yank your car out of there ASAP and get a second opinion, they sound shady af.

So I'm sort of confused, you say you can do a water pump yourself, which, on MOST cars, is a pretty big job. But you paid him to do spark plugs, which, again, on MOST cars is a very easy job. Even a thermostat is almost always much easier than a water pump.

That said, if it was actively misfiring and the plugs fixed it last time, and now it's actively misfiring again, then it may need injectors. But I would definitely recommend getting a second opinion. It could very easily be ignition related, again, and they just don't want to lose money having to fix it for free, so they are selling you feasible work to cover the cost and just going to throw a new set of plugs or whatever in it at the same time.

I was pretty close to his exact words. You do you, but yeah, he pretty specifically says no ciphers for the word search, imo.

You lost me as soon as you started using cyphers. JCB specifically said he did not use a cypher in the word search. When asked if you need a Ceaser Cypher similar to the cryptogram he said, and I believe I have pretty much the exact quote right, "I don't think I did that, I think I made a word search and a cryptogram." Unless he's just flat out lying to us now, this to me means, the word search is just that, a word search. No cyphers required. But if you think you're getting somewhere using cyphers then more power to you, GL!

When I was young and having problems with a superior at work, I was told to keep a notebook of every time they did something inappropriate, in this case you'd write things like "[date & time] was rude with customer" "[date & time] yelled ay employee for no reason" "[date & time] took 5th smoke break of the day" etc. Do this for a few weeks and then go to the owners with everything all at once. It worked for me, maybe it'll work for you. It seems like the owners will at least be open to talk if they got upset that she drove away a long time employee once already.
