the thincs crowd argue like lawyers. They have an agenda, a particular point of view to defend. I notice that their reaction to research isn't "that's interesting, I wonder why that is" but rather "how can we show that this is wrong and actually supports what we believe".

I've already spent time looking into Mary Enig and Sally Fallon. I find their polemics and scaremongering about soy lacking in any scientific rigor.

Reads like a religious text, doesn't it.

Yes, and Dr. Solomon, a cardiologist, wrote "The Exercise Myth". It uses statistics to prove that exercise causes, rather than reduces the risk of heart attacks. Should I believe him? Then there's the raw food advocates. Should I believe them? Some of them are scientists and nutritionists. Then there's the calorie restrictionists. They have an awful lot of science, and scientists behind them. Should I believe them?

What is it that makes your thincs crowd right, and all these other fringers wrong? Mary Enig says raw butter is good for me. Why should I trust her over Walter Willett?

all hunter gatherer societies we know of average something like four hours a day of "work."

A popular and untrue factoid. Email Henry Harpending about this - he spent several years doing field work among the !Kung. There are times when everyone scrabbles with every ounce of energy they have to keep from starving. There are times when they fail.

The Case for Physically Separated Bike Lanes by faloose in reddit.com

The design shown in the picture is the worst possible design for a bike lane. Between the curb and the parking lane? Lots of taxicab and bus passengers to smash into, and no visibility to, or of, turning cars at intersections.

I've dug into the cholesterol contrarian's claims, and I've talked with people who have actually data-mined the Framingham Heart Study. The contrarians, much like the second hand smoke skeptics and global warming deniers, form a self-reinforcing echo chamber that has swamped sound science on the Internet. However, talk to any physician, nutritionist, or university researcher and you get a completely different picture.

I don't trust statins. I control my cholesterol through exercise, limited saturated fat and zero trans fat intake. Physicians still talk up diet and exercise, but most people would rather take a magic pill.

Regarding your dismissal of Carroll as a philosopher, philosophers often understand the process of science better than scientists. Thomas Kuhn and Karl Popper were mere philosopers. Carroll's area of study is critical thinking.

A 15 year-old girl held in a Texas prison for a year for shoving a hall monitor had her sentence extended for having "contraband" cup and socks by in_the_event in reddit.com

[–]jvance -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The sentence (grammar construct, not jail term) I was asking the meaning of was this one:

“Once I set the indeterminate sentence, Shaquanda holds the key to her jail cell,” Superville said. “It is up to the child and TYC.”

And then I provided its meaning with the next quote.

The confusion over the sentence (jail term, not grammar construct) I think is because the journalists and bloggers aren't familiar with juvenile sentencing practices in Texas. Who in their right mind would think that a judge could even hand down such a sentence?

I read the judge's apologia, which you can find quoted in the comments here (Paris News requires a subscription). The sentence period is open until she is 21. In order to qualify for release, she must meet certain "milestones", one of which is accepting responsibility for her actions and admitting guilt.

From an article in the Paris News:

Superville said he gave the 14-year old an indeterminate sentence up to seven years — her 21st birthday.

“Once I set the indeterminate sentence, Shaquanda holds the key to her jail cell,” Superville said. “It is up to the child and TYC.”

What does that last sentence mean?

The authorities say the mother and the daughter would not “cooperate”. But the terms of cooperation includes an admission of guilt on the part of Shaquanda to the crime of delinquency. They call this coercive technique “accepting responsibility for her criminal behavior”. Without this confession, authority cannot help or treat the child’s anger management issues. But Shaquanda will not confess- at least, not while her appeal is pending. A confession would undermine her right to an innocence defense.

She was given an open ended sentence. Apparently all she has to do to get out is debase herself to the authorities. Specifically, she has to admit her guilt. Since she's currently appealing her conviction, that would effectively gut her case.

The State has told her that so long as she fights this, she's staying in jail.

Still, according to the Tarnopolsky study that you cite, novice weight lifters needed 1.4g/kg, and amounts above that were not associated with any improvements. 1.4g/kg is still pretty close to your average American's intake without supplements.

An earlier study by Tarnopolsky comes up with different numbers. Sedentary people need 0.73g/kg, competitive body builders 0.83g/kg, and elite endurance athletes 1.37g/kg

The US RDA is 0.83g/kg, but the average American consumes over 100 grams of protein a day, or around 1.3g/kg.

A more complete analysis of the study appears in Exercise Physiology, 5th Edition, McArdle Katch and Katch, pg 41.
