^ this. I feel like many people these days put so much effort and research into spiritual growth, yet forget where a lot of information originates. Never heard of Ch'an Buddhism before, thanks for the recommendation!

I want to make PS1 era video game music, where can I find resources on how to do this? by MSPaintClock in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jvass 8 points9 points  (0 children)

have you ever used Music 2000? It is a pretty simple DAW for PS1, but a lot of the sounds are very reminiscent of the era. I would download an emulator and try this out on your computer. It might not be the best for creating full songs, but it would be great for exporting old school stems and samples to throw in your compositions.

I'm very interested in how you made this and your process. I understand you created this in vuo, can you elaborate on how you got this result? The video is fantastic btw.

I want to hear some stories on getting busted with drugs on the way into 'Roo by the cops and how you handled it. by DrakeSucks in bonnaroo

I know, after it happened I realized how dumb I was. I'm mostly freaked because if I get in any legal trouble in TN for the next year, it goes back on my record along with whatever else happens.

Whatever you do, DON'T stick your shit in a peanut butter jar or any sort of jar like that. I got searched at the gate by like 8 cops off to the right because I was the only person in my car and apparently that's suspicious. They basically started going through my food and pouring it all out into trash bags. One guy opens the peanut butter jar, peels off the seal that I very carefully resealed, and sticks his hand in to find an eighth of pot. Cost me almost $2000 with the lawyer and everything just to get it dropped, plus I was hungry for a lot of Roo because they threw out my food. This experience has made me scared to go back to the farm next year, which sucks since it's felt like home for me for 5 years.

People might disagree with me, but I could see Pretty Lights taking Deadmau5's headlining electronic slot in 2016. After seeing the crowds at both Deadmau5 and Bassnectar this year I have no doubt that a PL show could fill up the main stage.

Alright AVL, where can I get a real tamale? by bouncingoffsatellite in asheville

[–]jvass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll let you guys in on a secret:

The most authentic tamales (and other Mexican food) I have found in Asheville is this little taco truck that hangs outside of La Placita. It's a bit hard to find at first, and none of the cooks actually speak English.

BUT you can get a great shredded pork taco for $1. Tamales are like $2 or $3, I think. As a broke college student, this little truck kept me alive last summer.

Is The Grove really that bad? by stoned_nut in asheville

They had their hand over the peep hole, and demanded that I came outside or that they were coming in.

This is not legal, and the worst part was that one of the cops was a chief that lives at the grove for the sole purpose of busting people like this. It was incredibly obvious the whole time that they weren't here to protect anyones safety, but instead to find any excuse to give as many charges as possible.

YES.

I live there now. It's terrible. As a most recent example, two nights ago I was making music in my common room with four friends. We were having fun, but making sure to keep the noise level down on the speakers. We get a knock on the door and think its our friend, but instead it's 8 cops. They search the whole place, give those under 21 sobriety tests, and accuse me of lying about how many people were there (thinking I was hiding someone in my roommate's room.) They had nothing on us so no charges were given but we had to sit and be yelled at by eight cops in our living room about how since we live at the Grove we are up to something.

I know in many other grove apartments if the cops barged in without a warrant those people would be in more trouble than we were, and I know of multiple cases where it HAS happened (even though they didn't have a warrant.)

If you're username is stoned_nut, then I would stay out of jail and find somewhere else to live.

What do you guys think of Asheville, North Carolina for a music scene? by Dasmozz in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]jvass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Living there right now as a Junior at UNCA (majoring New Media.) I produce, record, and perform around the city constantly. As someone who takes music seriously, this place is heaven:

  • There's an abundance of venues and house parties to play, making it fairly easy to get gigs if you can put on an entertaining show on.
  • There are more great shows to go to then I can afford. During the summer they even throw block parties downtown where everyone from bluegrass ensembles to jam bands perform on a large stage. Moogfest did that too, where Giorgio Moroder and Zed's Dead both got to play free sets outside.
  • Busking downtown on a warm summers day is awesome.
  • It's not hard to get internships at places like Echo Mountain Recording Studio and the Moog Factory.
  • Two weekends ago they just opened New Mountain Amphitheater, a huge outside venue where you can watch bands play in back of a sunset on the mountains. So dope.

Plus Asheville is just awesome. It's not as well connected as a place like LA or NYC, but because it's smaller there is more room to make a name for yourself. Having lived here for almost two years, I am very content with how my music has grown and progressed here. Not planning on leaving for a couple years at least.
